Oggetto: possible windows 2003 authentication problems

I just installed a new DC running windows server 2003 enterprise running
Exchange 2003.

The server is running fine, email is working fine.

We can log on to the domain fine, with no errors.

The problem i am having is that when you open up outlook on the client
machines, it asks for your domain username and password.
Also, when you try to browse the network and double click on the server to
access the shares it also prompts for a username and password.
This is all after successfully logging on to the domain with the correct
user/pass at the windows logon screen.
It should not prompt for this if you are successfully authenticated on the
server.

I ran into this problem with one machine when i changed the machine name, and
the machines new name not being listed in the "domain computers" list, so ive
made sure the machines are listed with proper permissions set.
The users are also setup correctly for domain users.

Its like there is an authentication issue on the server, but i dont know where
else to troubleshoot this problem.
The event log doesnt list any errors or problems.

Could any of you give me some help or hints as to where to look to try and fix
this problem?

Everything looks correct on the server as far as permissions are concerned.
The machines and users are listed in AD.

What would cause this problem?

Thanks for any help you can give.

RE: NTFS MFT protection

2009-01-19 Thread Joseph L. Casale
Unless your data on this volume is 100% static, that's not going to help.
The moment you touch that filesystem, it changes it. No backup of the mft would
ever be valid at any point in the future...
As Ken pointed out, you need to protect the contents of the filesystem, not of
some aspect of the underlying workings.
I'd be more interested in finding out why it tanked and preventing it.

Anyone have any experience with software that allows a small group of users to
share Outlook contacts? I have a place that consists of 5 similar business
(Interior Designers) that share an office space which includes the network and
phones. Since they all have most of the same distributors, vendors, etc. they
would like to have a master copy they everyone can share. I explained they
could import/export files, use Excel or whatever but haven't liked any of the
suggestions so far.

I've searched and found several that claim to do this but I would like some
feedback if possible.

RE: SBS 2003 to SBS2008 Migration

2009-01-19 Thread Jim Majorowicz
The 2003 to 2003 kit has been an absolute godsend to me in the past two
years. I have high hopes for this set as well. Jeff seems to do a very
good job of documenting his stuff. Plus he's always been there if I've got
a quick question about something.

The swing migration kit written by Jeff Middleton is a great tool. He
hasn't finished his 2003 to 2008 kit yet, but he's started a beta process
for the kit and it's suppose to be ready in February. He had a nice
presentation about migrating not too long ago on the partner training site.
Might be worth a watch as well.

This is a single server, small setting. Only a few users. Mailboxes are
relatively small to begin with.

If all goes to crap, I can just start over. I was just hoping the migration
would eliminate the need to recreate accounts, etc.

Michael, I have not looked on your site or googled yet, but do you have the
VM migration steps on your site? Or a link?

The sbs2003->2008 migration is a hard slog. Do lots of preparation and check
that everything is really running smoothly first. I had problems with DNS
and ended up stripping off all my member servers and sites to simplify
things.

Also bring all the mailboxes down in size. If necessary archive them of and
put them back later, but let the migration run on minimal storage size - and
turn the AV OFF for the mailboxes - watching 200,000 emails come through at
1 per second is not fun!!

For me Exchange was the steepest learning curve, but the pop pickup really
comes into its own while you migrate and sort you IP issues. Changes to
things like catch-alls to a bit of time to work on - but I know of an MVP's
blog with a few hints (see below!!)

If you get a chance to virtualise the 2003 box then you could try the
migration in isolation.

#853
Cause
-When trying to print a large number of pages, the job is
not performed due to insufficient memory resources.
-Using the wrong printer driver.

Remedy
-Reduce the number of pages to print or perform the print
job again when other jobs are not reserved.
-Make sure that the print driver that you're using is the
correct one for that specific model printer that you're
printing to.

I would check to see if the spooler is enabled on the printer and disabled it
if it is. We had seen issue with Canon spooler and we just let the print
servers handle it now. We also have seen issues with setting IP address where
we have had to let it pick from DHCP then we could change the IP to static.

RE: Canon networked printer - error 853

2009-01-19 Thread Hart, Robert

#853

I would check to see if the spooler is enabled on the printer and
disabled it if it is. We had seen issue with Canon spooler and we just
let the print servers handle it now. We also have seen issues with
setting IP address where we have had to let it pick from DHCP then we
could change the IP to static.

I have a Canon imageRunner 3025 printer/copier/blender that has been
used as a fax and recently was requested to network it. I have the IP
set and can hit the printer via both PING and web management interface,
however when I send a print job it get "NG, error 853".

Google-Fu has suggested a few items, I was wondering if anyone here has
seen this issue and resolved it? The Canon is question is one of their
larger do-it-all systems as you'd expect to see from Xerox, etc.

We have found the Canons to be very sensitive to speed/duplex issues -
make sure you have the NIC set to match your switch (either have both
set to auto/auto or locked in) - the interface to set it isn't the
best...

Re: VMWare alarm question - SOLVED

2009-01-19 Thread Jeff Bunting
Yes, it still sends an alert. I think it is counter intuitive, but I
suppose alerts remain enabled because VMs may still be running on the host
while it is in maintenance mode.
Still, an option to disable alerts sounds like an obvious feature...

There's an Operations Manager 2007 Cleanup Tool available on the System
Center Operations Manager 2007 Tools and Utilities page which is
supposed to do a full cleanup when Add/Remove Programs doesn't work:

Have you tried the "Add/Remove Programs" / "Programs and Features"

Can anyone shed any light on this? I feel kind of exposed without my

RE: All AD Accounts getting gradually locked out - UPDATE

2009-01-19 Thread Andy Crellin

Update: Looks like it was CONFICKER taking advantage of unpatched
systems. We are no longer getting any reports of lockouts (patches all
applied). Typical - the time you suspend patching to move to a new
system is always going to be when you are hit with a new virus. Oh well,
it didn't kill our network so our containment procedures worked well.

Ok - we are rolling out this patch to all PCs and servers now and expect
it solve the problem (the description fits, etc). Typically we had just
moved to WSUS and have been testing it on a control group for the last
couple of months, meaning that we're short a few patches!

I'll let you know how it goes.

OK, here's a teaser...

All of our AD accounts are gradually being locked out. I have one guy
searching for locked out accounts and unlocking them (and they do not
get re-locked out) but with 2500 accounts this is more than a PITA. Now,
this stinks of a brute force attack on an enumerated list of accounts on
the network (we allow 10 attempts then lockout for 30mins), but we can't
find _anything_ that looks like this. To compound matters, we have also
had a small outbreak of WORM_DOWNAD.AD which has been contained and
managed well, but I think this is a red herring as that worm's symptoms
are nothing like what we are seeing (and there is no correlation).

Does anyone know of a way to find out what processes are attempting to
make a logon attempt (we have about 10 DCs spread about the place) to an
account - bearing in mind it could be any one of 2500 accounts? Also, is
it possible to find out where the logon attempt that caused an account
lock came from?

Cheers, and TIA,

Andy.
