May I ask why child domains instead of using OU's?

I know mine loved having me to boss around for the first few weeks before
the office began calling and waking the baby. I did the house work for
her. The State has never paid enough for me to pay for a maid or cleaning

Agreed on number 2 I have one 2003 DC and one 2008 DC in a single domain.

DNS and subnets really have nothing to do with each other.

The DHCP server may be handing out a default DNS parent domain, and
there can only be one of those. However, that will be just one of
several in the computer's DNS search list, and I'm pretty sure Windows
normally tries its own AD domain before others, so that should still
be fine.

Active Directory has some logic to automatically determine which
site a computer is in by looking at subnets. I dunno if that will get
confused or not.

I was thinking more along the lines of what implications in setting up the DNS
would be if the parent and child domains were in the same subnet.

I am setting up a child domain for a new buisness unit. We want to keep them
seperate in the future, but at the beginning, all the users will still exist in
the parent domain. My two questions are 1) what are the implications of having
the child domain on the same subnet of the parent domain. The second question
is, is there any pros or cons to having the child domain controller server
2008, when every server in the parent domain is still 2003?

Any input, advice, is greatly appriciated.

I think you should ask Acronis. Any opinions here would be just that, and not
really worth a whole lot.

  Subject: Legal question

How would you interpret this licensing? We are wanting to buy a single
license copy for use at clients as the situation rises. If one were to
purchase a single server license with Acronis Universal Restore and would
simply use it once to backup the images and restore them back to a server
without installing the software on the machine. We use the boot disk. Would
that legally be allowed to use it on multiple machines as the need dictates or
would one have to buy a license for each server even though usage will be
limited to just this one function once.

Specifically it would be use to backup Dynamic Disk volumes to an external
and restore the image back to Basic Disks on the same server with larger
partitions. One time use, no regular backups or such. Acronis works
perfectly, but at 1k per server for both components that's a bit steep. Most
of the other software we have evaluated does not work well or at all with
Dynamic Disks and failed dismally in our testing.

  1.5 License policy

Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server licensing is based on number of
servers on which Acronis True Image Agent and/or Acronis True Image Echo
Enterprise Server local version are to be installed. This means you need one
license for each server you are going to backup, whether you will control it
on-site (with the local program version) or remotely (using Acronis True Image
Agent), or use both ways of control. The number of Acronis True Image
Management Console, Acronis Group Server and Acronis Backup Server
installations is not counted.

Acronis Universal Restore is an option to Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise
Server and has its own serial number.

Legal question

2009-01-24 Thread gsweers
How would you interpret this licensing? We are wanting to buy a single
license copy for use at clients as the situation rises. If one were to
purchase a single server license with Acronis Universal Restore and
would simply use it once to backup the images and restore them back to a
server without installing the software on the machine. We use the boot
disk. Would that legally be allowed to use it on multiple machines as
the need dictates or would one have to buy a license for each server
even though usage will be limited to just this one function once.

Specifically it would be use to backup Dynamic Disk volumes to an
external and restore the image back to Basic Disks on the same server
with larger partitions. One time use, no regular backups or such.
Acronis works perfectly, but at 1k per server for both components that's
a bit steep. Most of the other software we have evaluated does not work
well or at all with Dynamic Disks and failed dismally in our testing.

1.5 License policy

Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server licensing is based on number
of servers on which Acronis True Image Agent and/or Acronis True Image
Echo Enterprise Server local version are to be installed. This means you
need one license for each server you are going to backup, whether you
will control it on-site (with the local program version) or remotely
(using Acronis True Image Agent), or use both ways of control. The
number of Acronis True Image Management Console, Acronis Group Server
and Acronis Backup Server installations is not counted.

Acronis Universal Restore is an option to Acronis True Image Echo
Enterprise Server and has its own serial number.

So far everyone has come of with great ideas for you but when we had our
first I would have loved having someone to call to go fix what was broken at
the office so that I had more time with mom and baby. Yeah the Family Act
helps but if you are a one man shop they still call and expect you onsite
within the a lotted time to fix the issue. If he is not in that boat then
look for a good but not expensive camera one that can go places and in the
end get destroyed without anyone getting too upset over the lose. Dad's and
mom's love to take pictures and in the end the camera usually gets damaged
either from over use or baby getting a hold of it. If they will be having a
nanny then maybe a nanny cam setup in the house.

BartPE does have an MFT copier/restorer tool.

Ubcd4win.com to get you going quickly. I don't recall the tool, but I tried
using it recently after I accidentally ghosted a drive the wrong way and
wiped out a drive with an empty one ;)

Subject: NTFS MFT protection

Does anyone know of a way to back up and protect a NTFS MFT? I have found
plenty of links on tools that can be used to recover or repair the MFT on
disk, but no way to move the files off of disk as part of an over all data
protection plan. Recently I found myself in the situation where the MFT and
the MFT backup on disk were both corrupt which resulted in the loss of data.

Thanks,

Fred

I have gfi fax at some small installs, it supposedly scales out nicely but
you would have to check for yourself.

I just rolled out hylafax with TDMoE gateway, pretty nice, 100 users, 100
DID's. I think they paid their asterisk vendor 1,500 dollars and the server
was around 2,000.

Look at lowering the domain requirements from NTLM to whichever is the lower
one. You had to do this for win98/ME clients on 2000 domains back in the
day. I think the ad client add on helps or circumvents that option. (Domain
Security Policy)

I would look at migrating that computer into a vm so you can get good
backups of the whole thing and keep it on newer hardware .. just my .02

A maid to come in once a week for the first month to do basic housework
(sweep, vacuum, wash floors, clean bathrooms, clean the kitchen, etc.).
If they are going to use cloth diapers, pay for a diaper service for the
first little while. A stroller. A carseat. Crib bedding (but find out if
they have a theme).

Perhaps they are registered somewhere and you can see what's on their
list. Failing that, call one of the grandmothers because they'll likely
know exactly what she wants.

What is a really nice thing to have that you would have liked to get in

Its a boy, if that makes any odds.

2009-01-24 Thread Jonathan Link
Clothes. All new parents appreciate clothes. And you don't have to get the
0-3 month sizes, you can buy for later ages/sizes. Our friends (with
kids) bought clothes for our daughter to grow into, while family tended to
by clothes she would need right away. It was nice to have a ready set of
clothes when our daughter outgrew a stage.
