Greetings!

I never want to see the "Microsoft Language Toolbar" again on my task bar.
Someday, someone else might want to see the tool...

Anyone know how to make it go away and stay away unless I specifically
request its return?

Thanks...

In reply to the KMS response. That is correct you can only have one KMS key per
host. What you should be getting is a key that will serve all of your clients.
There are 3 server groups for KMS keys (Server Group A, Server Group B, Server
group C). Take a look at this:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc308698.aspx

Each group is inclusive of the previous group. So Group C can activate
everything in Group A and Group B.

Only one question I can answer.
You will definitely need separate KMS hosts for Vista and 2008.
That's another one of these MS docs that isn't clear but you can't have more
than one KMS key on a single host, or at when we tried to add our vista KMS key
to a server 08 kms host, it gave an error that the key was invalid.

Subject: WS03 to WS08 Upgrade installation

Has anyone actually attempted this yet? If so, can you please share
experiences good/bad? I realize clean installs are always the best, but we are
looking at this for some of our servers that are already running WS03 x64 and
could be a pain to do a clean installation, if it's really not needed. We've
done a lot of upgrades with past server versions going back to NT, and of
course will have alternate plans in case things does not go well.

What I'm finding out there so far on upgrades from '03 to '08 is kind of
"icky", for lack of a better word.

For example, this Technet article:
Known Issues When Upgrading to Windows Server 2008
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731003.aspx

Makes it sound like you can't upgrade a server that has more than just a C
drive installed. Or do they really just mean that your C drive must be on
drive 0? For example, if I'm upgrading a DC with AD logs sitting on the D
drive, removing hard drives half way through the installation will not be an
option-I would need to take the time to move the logs ahead of time to the C
drive for the upgrade.

How about the whole printer backup/restore thing? Does that mean the printers
will migrate (if you run the procedure) or they won't? If they migrate, I'm
assuming I still need to have all third-party drivers downloaded and ready when
'08 asks for them? And, would I need to then also reinstall XP-style drivers
for the XP and 2003 server machines to download? I'm trying to figure out if
it wouldn't be best to leave our print servers on '03 while the majority of the
clients are still XP. We are licensed under MS Schools for '08, so it's not a
cost issue at this point.

Also, for anyone using KMS licensing for WS08 server-can it live on the same
server as a Vista KMS, or does it need to be separate?

Just trying to do as much reading and get all the ducks in a row before I run a
test on one. Obviously I'll be updating server firmware and have new WS08
drivers handy.

Thanks,
Bonnie

I had it complain about "Different MX records at nameservers" but
not actually give any details about the problem. I think that's worse
than no test at all, since now I'm just worried something's wrong but
have no idea what's actually wrong, or what I might do to fix it.

Fortunately, I'm more than passingly familiar with DNS. Running
"dig" queries manually from multiple hosts on different providers
shows no inconsistencies between all delegated nameservers. Nor do
other web-based DNS checks I run. I think dns-sort.com itself is
broken. Maybe they're not expecting round robin?

I still prefer Zone Check (http://www.zonecheck.fr/). You can run
it from their website, or download and host your own.

Yep, turn it off and do not do any updates. That will fix it :).

Has anyone set up an SSHd server on a Windows box with Active Directory
authentication? I have taken a look at freeSSHd and it seems fairly straight
forward but doesn’t have AD integration. I would prefer a free solution but if
there is not a good free solution, then maybe a CHEAP solution will work too.

Also, OpenSSH would not be ideal since it runs with Cygwin and those who will
maintain this are not Linux/Unix people.

2009-03-16 Thread Don Kuhlman
We use Van Dyke Software's Vshell server to make Windows boxes SSH servers.
It's not free, but has a 30 day tryout and you can probably get a couple
connection version for around 300 - 400. We use the unlimited Enterprise
version which is more.

Support is as good as Sunbelt's with email(in my experience) and we use AD
credentials to authenticate to servers running it in our Domain as well as
local and key based auth.

RE: WSUS -- How many Gigs is your server?

2009-03-16 Thread Bill Songstad (WCUL)
I concur. The settings also imply that the download is dependent upon
approval- not need. I wish there were more settings to fine tune that.
There doesn't seem to be a way to set it to download only needed and
approved updates. It certainly knows the difference when it cleans up
un-needed updates.

Don't they get downloaded only once WSUS says they're needed by at least
1 machine? I would think that it would take approved + needed to =
download to WSUS server. If not, wouldn't the cleanup wizard keep
deleting the same un-needed updates every month? The wizard might have
logic that says "deleted, don't download again unless needed" but it
would make more sense not to use the bandwidth in the first place unless
you need it.

I'm constantly hanging out between 30 and 60 gigs. I think the
difference between the big ones and the little ones is auto-approving
updates and downloading approved updates. I have a couple of machines in
a wsus test group that I auto-approve all critical updates. They don't
get all the updates of course, but since they are all approved whether
needed or not, they get downloaded. Every month I run the server
cleanup wizard and it deletes 10-20 gigs.

Something's wrong.

I've got XP + Vista + Windows Server 2003 + Windows Server 2008 +
Exchange + SQL Server + Defender - all updates and SPs (no drivers) and
I'm hovering around 10GB. I do regularly run the cleanup wizard, and I
don't approve updates for ia64.

There were some .NET SPs that you got every language version of (because
they could all be installed on English versions of Windows). Maybe a few
things like that?

That's what I figured. I'm just going to rebuild it. It's an OLD build.
It's down now, it's an ESX VM, so I'm copying it and expanding the C
drive, but I think the only products I have selected are things like
XP, Vista, and Windows 7 updates, Office 2003, and 2007.
I think I have some misc things like the .net stuff and whatnot, but
no server stuff. Something is obviously messed up it sounds like.

Thanks guys.

I'm constantly hanging out between 30 and 60 gigs. I think the difference
between the big ones and the little ones is auto-approving updates and
downloading approved updates. I have a couple of machines in a wsus test
group that I auto-approve all critical updates. They don't get all the
updates of course, but since they are all approved whether needed or not,
they get downloaded. Every month I run the server cleanup wizard and it
deletes 10-20 gigs.

2009-03-16 Thread David Lum
Don't they get downloaded only once WSUS says they're needed by at least 1
machine? I would think that it would take approved + needed to = download to
WSUS server. If not, wouldn't the cleanup wizard keep deleting the same
un-needed updates every month? The wizard might have logic that says "deleted,
don't download again unless needed" but it would make more sense not to use the
bandwidth in the first place unless you need it.

Subject: Vista Backup

I helped a person purchase a Thinkpad SL500 after her el-cheapo HP tossed its
bits. This brought up the question of backing her stuff up, so trying to offer
her the easiest advice I could think of, mentioned the built in backup Vista
has. I copied over roughly 4.5g of stuff from the old hard drive, so I know
there isn't that much stuff on it. I showed her how it worked and we attempted
Files backup while at my desk, but after 20 minutes of that, I had other things
to do. I just canceled it, told her it probably wouldn't take much longer
overall and she could do it at home. Well, she tried. After 7 hours or so it's
still going on one DVD.

I didn't see TONS of complaining online about the speed of Vista's backup, but
there isn't exactly a lot to configure here. Is this other peoples experience?

Expired Encrypting File System cert

2009-03-16 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi All,

Just a quick question I hope, I dont know if anyone has come across this
one in the past.

The cert that has been assigned to the Encrypting File System in the default
domain policy has expired. This means that all offline file syncs now fail.
I have read up on recreating one, but having never done it before its all a
little daunting, as I dont know the ramifications if it all goes wrong.

In the GP, at the Public key Policies level, there is an Auto Enrollment
settings field that allows a check box to be put into the "renew expired
certificates,.."

Can I just do this and it will renew the expired cert, or is life just not
that easy?

If you have any tips or guidelines that would be great.

Its a SBS2003 premium server BTW.

Gavin.
