Slightly off topic. A similar thing happened to me last week.

I installed updates our Office Communication Server 2008 r2. After that
no one could get their Communicator connected. It turned out KB974571 was
the issue. I uninstalled the update and everything was fine.

The update was published only for Communication Server, it was an
important update to fix a security flaw according to Microsoft Update
and yet it broke it. Go figure.

Stupid Windows updates.
PSS on the phone.
I of the Windows Updates from some time ago that we just pushed down is
causing it.
Once I have the KB number I will update the list.
Whatever.

The broken SC is the root of your problem. No ifs ands or buts.

Did you try to reset the secure channel?

nltest /SC_RESET:DomainName[\DcName] - Reset secure channel for
Domain on ServerName to DcName

DcName is optional in IME

If that doesn't work you are looking at a disjoin/rejoin

Alt the above based on the assumption you have proper network connectivity
and the problem isn't further down the stack than the SC.

Did you do the sc_query:DOMAINNAME with the nltest to verify the channel.

Also do you have the right to logon over the network to this system. (Or
has it been denied?)

Well the 7034 errors are definitely not good. That means you have services

The DCOM errors may, or may not, be relevant.

You should find errors in your system event log if that is the case.

XP SP3 machine not getting logon window

2010-07-23 Thread Miguel Gonzalez
Dear all,

I'm running out of ideas. I have a Windows XP SP3 machine that boots up but
you reach the point just before you get the explorer.exe logon welcome window
so I get the mouse pointer a complete blue screen but it goes no further.

If I try safe mode, it doesn't go further either (but you get a beautiful
black screen with the Safe mode text all around).

Since i could access offline the event log files with a Windows live CD, I saw
an ID=20 error related to google update, I disabled that service but no love.

I have disabled some other services like SQL Server express, remove last
security updates and still nothing.

 Any ideas I can try?

 Miguel

it up as a slave in another PC and get the data off that way, of course, but
it’s looking more and more like you need to wipe and reinstall. L

Once it became a policy, it became mandated for insurance reasons.

RE: XP SP3 machine not getting logon window

2010-07-23 Thread Jeff Cain
I ran into something similar recently when working on an XP sp3 machine. I
tried everything I could think of including going to google about it, the most
I could gather was that there was a crash happening during (WGA) activation
which prevented the finalization of the boot up sequence. Other people had run
into it, but had no working suggestions.

I ended up having to remove the hard drive and back up the data to another
machine, then reinstalling Windows XP sp3.

Many good responses have been provided thus far, but it comes down to the
following for many organizations:

 * Training of all sorts become early casualties of budgets. If there aren't
enough reasons from a Senior Management standpoint to have that sort of
training, it won't happen
 * Organizations assume that people know.
 * Organizations forward emails or links about the subject and assume that
this is good enough
 * They don't hire someone who will manage the ongoing process of end-user
security training, or they relegate it to someone with 19 hats who won't have
the time to do it justice.
 * There's a whole lot more than just security training that they're not
doing -- sometimes including security itself.

Security costs, but good security prevents more debilitating costs. Some
organizations just don't get that yet.

basics of Internet Security.

How not to get phished, not to get scammed, don't click on something you
shouldn't. Most of us get mandatory sexual harassment training once a year.
Why not training on being secure on the net?

What do you think is causing this, especially with moving things in the
cloud?

Interested in your input.

Warm regards,

Stu

Many good responses have been provided thus far, but it comes down
to the following for many organizations:
Training of all sorts become early casualties of budgets. If there
aren't enough reasons from a Senior Management standpoint to have
that sort of training, it won't happen
 Organizations assume that people know.
Organizations forward emails or links about the subject and assume
 that this is good enough
They don't hire someone who will manage the ongoing process of end-
user security training, or they relegate it to someone with 19 hats
who won't have the time to do it justice.
There's a whole lot more than just security training that they're
not doing -- sometimes including security itself.
Security costs, but good security prevents more debilitating costs.
Some organizations just don't get that yet.

AD User account restore procedure

2010-07-23 Thread Christopher Bodnar
I have a business user that wants to restore a user account that was
deleted from AD but they don't know the samaccountname, but they do know
the SID. They also have no idea how far back this account was deleted.
this is the procedure I propose. Can someone verify if this is accurate,
or am I missing something. Most of this was taken from (
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840001)

Thanks

You need a domain controller on which to restore, and System State backups
that go back as far as the user account was deleted.

1. Reboot the domain controller in Directory Services restore mode
2. Restore the most recent System State backup (will vary depending
on environment).
3. User ADFIND or a similar utility to enumerate the Active Directory
users with their SIDs, and locate the desired account:

adfind -gc -null -f (objectcategory=person)(objectclass=user)
samaccountname objectid -csv c:\temp\Users_SID.csv

4. Repeat steps 3-4 until the user account is found
5. Use NTDSUTIL to authoritatively restore the account found in step
4:

ntdsutil authoritative restore restore object
cn=JohnDoe,ou=Mayberry,dc=contoso,dc=com q q

6. Remove all the network cables from the recovery domain controller
7. Restart the recovery domain controller in normal Active Directory
mode
8. Type the following command to disable inbound replication to the
recovery domain controller:

repadmin /options recovery dc name +DISABLE_INBOUND_REPL

9. Enable network connectivity back to the recovery domain controller
whose system state was restored.
10. Outbound-replicate the auth-restored objects from the recovery
domain controller to the domain controllers in the domain and in the
forest:

repadmin /syncall /d /e /P recovery dc Naming Context

Re: Anyone using Forefront UAG and Direct Access

2010-07-23 Thread Kurt Buff
IMHO, yes, and no.

It's basically IPSec to a gateway inside your network.

Nothing new there.

However, according to what I've read, it makes the connection at boot
time, which allows you to apply GPOs, login scripts, etc.

So, whoever gains access to the machine has access to your network.

Mitigations:

 1) Full Disk Encryption. Must have this to stymie things like
booting from a Nordahl disk to change the Administrator password,
among other things

 2) No Admin access for standard users - don't allow them to
install anything that isn't business-related and authorized. This is
where whitelisting apps is going to be critical.

There are probably other things that can and should be done, but I
believe that's the basics.

RE: Anyone using Forefront UAG and Direct Access

2010-07-23 Thread Malcolm Reitz
I won't say DirectAccess is just another VPN, because it isn't, but it is a
VPN technology with pretty robust security. It isn't an easy setup, as it
requires working with IPv6 and certificates, however, once it is running, it
is really slick in operation. Just connecting your laptop to the Internet
and being instantly able to map corporate file shares and open intranet web
apps or RDP sessions is great. Downsides to it are that not everything works
with it, as not everything plays nice with IPv6, and the hardware
requirements are more significant than for a traditional IPsec VPN. It also
only works with Windows 7 clients.

Microsoft has enhanced security on their DirectAccess implementation by
requiring their people to use smart cards for DirectAccess authentication.
We may do that as well.

I can say that everyone using my DirectAccess POC setup is liking it so far.
Because of its always on nature, I think it will be a great boon to our
management of remote computers (they always be connected for patching, AV
updates, inventory, etc.).

Subject: AD User account restore procedure

I have a business user that wants to restore a user account that was deleted
from AD but they don't know the samaccountname, but they do know the SID. They
also have no idea how far back this account was deleted. this is the procedure
I propose. Can someone verify if this is accurate, or am I missing something.
Most of this was taken from (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840001)

Thanks

You need a domain controller on which to restore, and System State backups that
go back as far as the user account was deleted.

1.Reboot the domain controller in Directory Services restore mode
2.Restore the most recent System State backup (will vary depending on
environment).
3.User ADFIND or a similar utility to enumerate the Active Directory
users with their SIDs, and locate the desired account:

adfind -gc -null -f (objectcategory=person)(objectclass=user) samaccountname
objectid -csv c:\temp\Users_SID.csv

[[Brian Desmond]] Without the -showdel flag on adfind you're not going to find
any deleted objects. You can also filter on objectSid with adfind - look at the
-binenc switch and the syntax in Joe's help.

4.Repeat steps 3-4 until the user account is found
5.Use NTDSUTIL to authoritatively restore the account found in step 4:

[[Brian Desmond]] You would first need to do a system state restore from a tape
backup that contains the live user. This can go back as far as your tombstone
lifetime.

ntdsutil authoritative restore restore object
cn=JohnDoe,ou=Mayberry,dc=contoso,dc=com q q

6.Remove all the network cables from the recovery domain controller
[[Brian Desmond]] Not necessary

7.Restart the recovery domain controller in normal Active Directory mode
8.Type the following command to disable inbound replication to the
recovery domain controller:

repadmin /options recovery dc name +DISABLE_INBOUND_REPL

[[Brian Desmond]] Not necessary
9.Enable network connectivity back to the recovery domain controller
whose system state was restored.
[[Brian Desmond]] Not necessary

10.Outbound-replicate the auth-restored objects from the recovery
domain controller to the domain controllers in the domain and in the forest:

repadmin /syncall /d /e /P recovery dc Naming Context

11.[]

[[Brian Desmond]] IMO if you can find it you're better undeleting the object
(you can pipe adfind to admod to do this) and repopulating the attributes.
You'll get the SID back which seems to be the attribute you're concerned with.
