Sunbelt Security Newsletter today

2011-04-20 Thread David Florea
Just FYI, Sunbelt's newsletter dated today, issue #111, in their 'Cool
Stuff' section, my Vipre throws a warning and forces a reboot if I click on
any of their links. Hadn't ever had this happen before, I'm a little
concerned their server may have been pwned.

Re: Adobe Illustrator (CS3) crashes on save

2011-04-20 Thread Jack
Having had to work with Adobe products in the past, the preferences file is
one of the things that goes corrupt very easy and deleting the folder of
either the offending Adobe product or the whole Adobe folder in either the
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Adobe folder or the
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\Adobe folder does the trick. Unless of course you are redirecting the
app data folder for the persons logging in. then the files and folders will
be in that path.

The other thing to look at is if the hard drive is NTFS that the Adobe
directory has everything but full control set for all users or a specific
group.

Just asked. He says that in the past when this problem happened, he could
create a new file and just draw a box and try to save and it would exhibit
the same behavior. So far, after printing a test page on the printer, it
seems to be working, but it seems strange that Illustrator would have
problems because the primary printer wasn't available or something. I
don't

see a connection between not being able to print to a network printer and
saving a file.

Is this one specific file? If so, I would guess it is corrupt.

Re: Changing [most] login names in Active Directory

Richard, what is the business driver for the secondary parts of this

The name change is fine, but what is the benefit of changing all the other
parts? Are you using Exchange? Are the aesthetics going to be changed there

RE: Looking for secure video conferencing

2011-04-20 Thread Level 5 Lists
Jim, we recently deployed vutelepresence units, they are decent and weren't
very expensive (@ 1500/unit with 5 pc clients). We found them because they do
720p conferencing with about 500k of bandwidth. We deployed one to Florida,
Penn , and the UK for our client and they all seem to be pretty happy with them.

I think the company still has some ways to go but the product works pretty
well. Their sales/support was a little slow to respond.

The only system I played with is the Polycom setup we have. We have a VSX 7000,
which is really old, but there's a PC client for it that seems to work really
well. The Polycom (software client and hardware
unit) supports encryption, and the hardware unit can do multi-point
communication.

We decided not to go with the software client, but in my tests it performed

RE: Trend Micro Internet Security 14

2011-04-20 Thread Mike Gill
This may be solved by now, but another option would be to call Dell on it.
I'm sure they log the support calls and if they have a lot of people calling
in on this, they might be inclined not to be such dorks about how software
is installed on their systems. To this day I have a special batch file I
keep on hand for their My Way Web Search bar, as some older versions can't
be uninstalled either unless you know the proper path and command line.
Another reason why I wipe a new system before using it.

Need help with Exchange 2007 / OL2010 Calendaring issue

2011-04-20 Thread Jonathan
If any of you have any advice on this issue, I would appreciate it.

This seems to only happen on recurring meetings, but not every time. It even
happens on a recurring meeting setup by someone outside the organization
that is not connected to ours. Just like what is described here:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/uk-UA/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/2411ae14-47e1-486c-9ca0-87e858934490

Any ideas? If my user goes and declines the meetings, he gets a "since you
are the organizer, you do not need to respond". If he cancels the meeting,
it removes the meeting from everyone in the organization who had it on their
calendar. User is confident this has been a problem for a couple of months.

Sidenote - possibly useful, possibly not.User is syncing with a Droid 2,
was syncing with an HTC Windows Mobile up through perhaps December.
Problem has been since he switched to the Droid 2, but not sure if the
switch
coincides with the occurrence of the problem.

FYIWe're not updating to latest SP on Exchange because we're preparing
to roll out 2010.

Thanks,

RE: Looking for secure video conferencing

2011-04-20 Thread Jim Holmgren
We have deployed Lync here over the last 2-3 weeks, but we have not fully
explored the Video capability beyond some internal point-to-point testing.

We have it deployed internally only at this point, but it seems to be a nice
application that is very integrated into Outlook and SharePoint.

The only system I played with is the Polycom setup we have. We have a VSX 7000,
which is really old, but there's a PC client for it that seems to work really
well. The Polycom (software client and hardware
unit) supports encryption, and the hardware unit can do multi-point
communication.

We decided not to go with the software client, but in my tests it performed
just fine.

Subject: Remote, scheduled, laptop imaging?

Looking for a solution that will:

Schedule COMPLETE images of a laptop to USB or other device

Will nag the user if one hasn't been completed in X amount of days

Ideally will send an email if X amount of days have passed

It has to work off-site

XP based (Will we be on 7 soon though)

I currently have a solution that backs up DATA files (MozyPro), which works
great. But it still requires spending tons of time rebuilding the machine
if it's lost/stolen/fried.

I have a few machines out there with highly complicated builds, rebuilding
them is a PITA, even with the original image. I'm thinking weekly images
will be adequate.

Any pointers?

Tia,

Sam

The only system I played with is the Polycom setup we have. We have a VSX 7000,
which is really old, but there's a PC client for it that seems to work really
well. The Polycom (software client and hardware
unit) supports encryption, and the hardware unit can do multi-point
communication.

We decided not to go with the software client, but in my tests it performed
just fine.

Would a webinar-type system with video suffice? If so, I recommend

VMWare/iSCSI question

2011-04-20 Thread Steven M. Caesare
Not an NT-specific question per se, but thought I'd float it out there,
as I've seen similar discussed:

So, I had ESXi 4.0 seeing ~93MB/sec on 1Gb links to my OpenFiler SAN.
Not bad , as that represents ~750Mbps before overhead on the link.

I upgraded my box to 4.1. Well, actually I re-installed v4.1, as I
decided to install to a USB flash drive, in order to eliminate spinning
media in the ESXi hosts themselves. After the new install, I imported
the existing machines that were originally living on the 4.0 build (they
were in a separate data store). I also installed additional NICS and
added more mem to the SAN.

My speeds dropped by about a third to ~63MB/sec. (Actually I got the
same ~90+ speeds ONCE, and then I decided to rebuild the RAID array as a
RAID0 stripe, rather than a RAID5, in order to see if I could completely
saturate the gig network links, it dropped after that)

Things I've tried:

1) Updated the VMware tools in the guest OS's

2) Double checking the iSCSI parameters in vSphere and OpenFiler

3) Double checking my virtual nic/switch setup

4) Confirming jumbo frames connectivity over the iSCSI network
path(i.e. ping -d -s 8000)

5) Reverting back to the original NICS

6) Removing the additional memory in the SAN

7) Rebuilding the arrays back to their original RAID5 state

8) Rebuilding the volumes/LUNs on the SAN

9) Upgrading the Guest VM's from Virtual Machine v4 to v7

10) Pulling out my hair

Things I haven't done, and why:

a) Reverting back to ESXi 4.0u1 - This actually shouldn't be too
hard to do, as the drives with the existing ESXi build are still in the
server, just at a lower boot priority... I'd just have to pull the USB
key. The problem is I don't know how the guest OS's are going to behave
now that they are newer machine types (altho v7 is supported on ESXi
4.0u1 it seems), and have newer versions of VMWare tools installed on
them.

b) Going back to spinning ESXi boot media rather than the USB flash
drive. All our new Dell servers have the option to boot ESXi from
internal SD card, and it doesn't appear that the ESXi kernel really
needs high-performance _BOOT VOLUME_ storage once it's up and running.

Open to all suggestions

RE: Changing [most] login names in Active Directory

2011-04-20 Thread Crawford, Scott
I would start out testing a script to do this for one user at a time. After you
perfect that, it should scale easily. Changing settings in ADUC is easily done
using AdMod. Sharing can be handled with Net Share. User Reg.exe for the
registry. Tie em all together in a bat file and use the For command to
enumerate through all users. Of course you can also use vbscript, powershell or
any other language you're comfortable with.

For profile paths, I would change them server side, but ignore them on the
local side. They will take care of themselves as you replace machines in the
future. If you do want to change local, you'll need to edit the path in
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList to avoid the
folder names with .001.

Subject: Changing [most] login names in Active Directory

Greetings!

Our company (around 500 or so people) is considering changing the login names
for possibly all our users. For example, I may be changed from logging in as
"richardm" to "richardm01", etc.

Being changed from one login name to another is just one field in Active
Directory Users and Computers (ADUC). However...

1. For housekeeping purposes, we would like to have the name of the home
directory for each user to match the new login name. This gets complicated as,
if the folder is its own share (ie, ".\richardm$"), then the folder would first
need to be un-shared. Then it could be re-named and re-shared. Then it's back
to ADUC to change the path for the share and perhaps the roaming profile (if it
is not inside the user's home directory).

2. We know of at least two applications (help desk system and telephone user
client) which authenticate using AD. So, the administration client for
whatever applications we can remember would need to be used to make the name
changes, one-at-a-time.

So, I've been told to ask the forum:

1. Has anyone else done a mass login-name-rename, company wide? We have done
it on an individual basis, but not company-wide.

2. For local profiles... should we consider changing those as well (for
housekeeping purposes)? I believe that would involve renaming the folder in
"Documents and Setting" and also adding the path in ADUC. (That field is most
likely blank for users currently with no roaming profile). Once the profile
folder is re-names, would permissions change as well (and then need to be
changed)? Thing is here, if we do not do this correctly, then the user logs in
and no longer has their desktop icons, their "My Documents" folder, and most
user settings are back to the default. Administrators would then need to have
that person log out, then copy the contents of the old profile folder into the
new profile folder and adjust the permissions. Example, they rename my
".\richardm\" profile folder gets renamed ".\richardm01". In my experience,
there's a worse than even chance that when I log in, I'll not have my docs and
settings. An administrator will look at the file system and see that, besides
the ".\richardm01" folder, there is a new ".\richardm01.001" folder.

3. If so, were issues other than those mentioned?

Thank you...

Changing [most] login names in Active Directory

2011-04-20 Thread RichardMcClary
Greetings!

Our company (around 500 or so people) is considering changing the login
names for possibly all our users. For example, I may be changed from
logging in as "richardm" to "richardm01", etc.

Being changed from one login name to another is just one field in Active
Directory Users and Computers (ADUC). However...

1. For housekeeping purposes, we would like to have the name of the home
directory for each user to match the new login name. This gets
complicated as, if the folder is its own share (ie, ".\richardm$"), then
the folder would first need to be un-shared. Then it could be re-named
and re-shared. Then it's back to ADUC to change the path for the share
and perhaps the roaming profile (if it is not inside the user's home
directory).

2. We know of at least two applications (help desk system and telephone
user client) which authenticate using AD. So, the administration client
for whatever applications we can remember would need to be used to make
the name changes, one-at-a-time.

So, I've been told to ask the forum:

1. Has anyone else done a mass login-name-rename, company wide? We have
done it on an individual basis, but not company-wide.

2. For local profiles... should we consider changing those as well (for
housekeeping purposes)? I believe that would involve renaming the folder
in "Documents and Setting" and also adding the path in ADUC. (That field
is most likely blank for users currently with no roaming profile). Once
the profile folder is re-names, would permissions change as well (and then
need to be changed)? Thing is here, if we do not do this correctly, then
the user logs in and no longer has their desktop icons, their "My
Documents" folder, and most user settings are back to the default.
Administrators would then need to have that person log out, then copy the
contents of the old profile folder into the new profile folder and adjust
the permissions. Example, they rename my ".\richardm\" profile folder
gets renamed ".\richardm01". In my experience, there's a worse than even
chance that when I log in, I'll not have my docs and settings. An
administrator will look at the file system and see that, besides the
".\richardm01" folder, there is a new ".\richardm01.001" folder.

3. If so, were issues other than those mentioned?

Thank you...

OWA 2010 - General Settings Not Available

2011-04-20 Thread Scott Wilhelm
I have a single user who cannot get to Options->General Settings in their
2010 OWA account. For some reason their theme changed to one that no one
else has, and the general settings option (where we can change the theme) is
not available. Every other user in the domain has this available to them
though.

How would I go about either resetting this, or granting the user the ability
to see this again?

Thanks,

Scott

I saw a demo on Rhozet last week at NAB...fantastic transcoder...
I bet that you could use Sharepoint to do something like thisyou might
need some programming to make it a video server though...

RE: Private video server

2011-04-20 Thread Steven M. Caesare
Converting to the single format on the fly I think will be the iffy
part.

Otherwise Windows Media Services can do this seamlessly for WMV stuff.
You can use the new IIS smooth streaming stuff as well, but not for
other formats.(both services support authentication)

You could simply store the files on a web server and use a multi-format
capable player (or even let the users default installed player do it).

I did this a couple years ago for a client with training needs.
I wound up installing dotNetNuke and using a commercial addon for it that

Well, I know there are a bunch of apps out there to convert video between

use zamzar.com, which emails me a unique link when the file is ready to

RE: Vipre / trend micro error

2011-04-20 Thread John Aldrich
Try going to the folder where Trend is installed and (safe mode is probably
your best bet) run "pccctool.exe" and select the "uninstall" tab and then
click on the "uninstall" button. That might help. That's what seems to have
*finally* gotten rid of most of the hooks that Trend had in the laptop I'm
working on.

I have a small client we swapped from trend micro to vipre. We did the vipre
removal of trend , installed vipre and when we rebooted we are getting a
stop error on mup.sys. MSKB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906866 is
exactly whats happening, but this doesn’t fix it. We have 4 items registered
in Security Center so Im guessing trend didn’t uninstall correctly.

We don’t have trend listed as installed, so Im wondering if there was
somewhere I could go quickly to remove its registration from Security
Center. As an interim, we are disabling security center on the local boxes.
This is only on XP not Win7 …

Thanks

RE: no list traffic today ???

2011-04-20 Thread Matthew B Ames
Last thing I saw was stamped 22:46 19/04/2011 (BST). I then had about 9
messages blocked due to offensive language, which I could not be @rsed to
release :)

Subject: no list traffic today ???

Tried first to login via the web on sunbelt-software.com but the link doesn't
seem to be there.
I have not received any list traffic since before 7pm East Coast yesterday (
4/19/2011 )...

So yes, this is a test ... I'll try to be thick skinned for the responses if
the listserv cranks back up.

Seems this test may have ‘unlodged’ whatever was stuck … I’m seeing a
trickle of messages now, thanks for the inline and offline responses.

RE: Trend Micro Internet Security 14

2011-04-20 Thread John Aldrich
Nope...didn't think of that. Thanks. I think I'll try a combination of safe
mode, plus the "onboard" PCCCTOOL.exe that is in the "internet security 14"
directory.

Did you try booting to safe mode and then use the diagnostic utility?

doesn't matter whether you want to or not - sometimes the answer is not
