Hi, we have a very quick question for you !

In a business environment, for an employee, what would you think is the ideal
length in minutes to do their yearly online Security Awareness Training?
It should be long enough to get them trained as per the requirements, but not
too long to exceed their span of attention. Here is the link, promise it's not
more than 30 seconds! :

Warm regards,

Dell's Auto-Snapshot Manager (EqualLogic) vs. tradtional backup softwares

2011-12-30 Thread Jay Kulsh
As I learn more about Dell's Auto-Snapshot Manager that works with their
EqualLogic PS series, I am inclined to think that we may no longer need
traditional softwares like Backup Exec.

Could I be right? If wrong, in what respect?

Please share your experiences in the area.. Thanks.

I'm not familar with Dell's product in particular, but I believe it
is ultimately built around SAN snapshots, right?

SAN snapshots are useful, but they complement traditional backups,
they do not replace them. If your SAN has some kind of fatal problem
(above the controller level), or the SAN admin does something stupid,
you can loose the whole show in seconds. I will always want some
backups that are offline and separated by an air gap from the primary
copy.

That said, SAN snapshots can certainly reduce the [need for/number
of] offline backups.

This also depends on your definition of traditional software and
what roles you use it for. For example, with modern disk capacities,
it can be viable to just rsync/ROBOCOPY everything to removable disk
media on occasion.

As always, the right answer depends on the details, and whether a
given tool can help solve one's problems.

Ben,

Thanks for responding on this semi-holiday. Yes we will take a copy of data
off-site or setup iSCSI SAN in a remote location.

I don't see much use of software like Symantec's Backup Exec in such a
scenario. That was the thrust of my question. Thanks again.

Re: Dell's Auto-Snapshot Manager (EqualLogic) vs. tradtional backup softwares

2011-12-30 Thread Sean Martin
Ben is spot on. It's time to start letting go of the concept of backups and
start embracing the concept of data protection. With technologies like
snapshots, cloning, replication, de-duplication and compression becoming more
prevalent in data protection solutions, you have a myriad of capabilities at
your disposal. The important thing to remember (and I believe this is a
universal truth in IT) is to not let the technologies determine your business
requirements. Determine your business requirements and then identify which
technologies allow you to meet those requirements.
