Re: Sophisticated Phising attempt?

2012-03-29 Thread Graeme Carstairs
we have went trhough this process with 2 of our customers and I tell you it
was a painful process.

SME tend to use largely OEM, but one client had MS Subscrptions for Office
mixed iwth OEM windows, Oem SERVERS, and other licensing for MS products,
and it took 10 resubmits of the forms and many calls to get MS to accept
that the license list was valid.

with every response from them, very very stern about unlicensed software
and and immediate requirement to be come licensed.

Even to the point of sending through order forms for 25 copies of Office
enterprise when the client only had 17 users, and were full y licensed
through the rental scheme direct with MS for Office Pro.

Its was a very frustrating process.

I received an email purportedly to be from Microsoft about a Software
Asset Management (SAM) license review (headers looked like it came from MS,
but I'm not an expert). They indicated that they were trying to contact me
this week (it was sent on Tuesday, and the *only* prior contact was a
misdirected phone call into one of our director's voicemail[1]).

It includes 2 PDFs, one appears to be a report with our name on it, VLPS
Report, and it appears to have some correct information as to the
customerID. There's a deployment summary spreadsheet and a USA FAQ
2012.pdf. Included in the email are some instructions, a suggestion to use
the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit to help complete the tasks.
It includes an email address for msft...@microsoft.com or to contact
 another person at Microsoft.

The person's display name for contacting me is foreign and has
(Accenture) in parentheses. It comes from a microsoft.com email
address, however a reply back to that address generated an access denied
NDR, but a reply to the other individual did not. I haven't received an
email (I also forwareded the email to the other address) in response, and I
would have expected a faster turnaround. The email address did contain a
phone number, however that phone number, according to 800 notes, has been
used in several scams in the past, trying to trick people into giving bank
account information to receive a government grant. A physical address is
given, but it is the address to the Microsoft campus in Redmond.

So, I cautiously viewed the documents on my iPhone. One document, our
apparent licensing report appears entirely legitimate. I have had a weak
password on the eopen site for a while, just hadn't bothered changing it.
Second PDF (USA FAQ 2012[2]) is not viewable on my iPhone, it just displays
whitespace, as does the excel file. I'm going to take them to a sandboxed
computer to view them later. They also want information returned by April
 16th.

My other concern is some limited googling has suggested that this might
be legitimate, that Microsoft has engaged in third parties to do this, and
that there are variations of this process, but those could be cleverly
built forums with shills indicating the process is legit, so I turn to this
list for advice. In the body of the email there aren't any instructions on
where to send the information. If the sender can only send email, having
another address to receive this information seems to be necessary.

[1] The voicemail was extremely static laden and had several gaps in it.
[2] That's a poorly named FAQ and about the only poorly phrased or worded
 item in the email.

OT: NetFlix app on Samsung devices

2012-03-29 Thread Christopher Bodnar
Anyone out there having a problem with their NetFlix app on a Samsung TV
or Blu-Ray player this week? Seems very coincidental that it started right
after the European DST date of 3/25/2012. First noticed it on 3/26/2012
with my UN46C6400. Everything works great up until the loading screen.
Status bar never moves, and then about 30 seconds later you get a message
“We're having trouble playing this title right now. Please try again
later or select a different title. Internet connection is fine and other
apps work (VuDu, Amazon ). Tested NetFlix on my Sony Blu-Ray player and no
issues. Did all the typical troubleshooting steps, reset TV, de-activated
the device and re-activated. No luck. Then I went and tried my BD-D6500.
Now on this device, nothing seems to happen on the status bar page for
about 90 seconds then it starts to load and everything is fine. Never used
to be like that, usually started loading immediately. I’m thinking this
might be a timeout issue, that the TV has a much lower timeout than the
blu-ray player, but no way to prove that. So far support from NetFlix and
Samsung haven’t been any help.

Big-time update (and hardly a Windows update and something that shows the
necessity of security)!

One of our programmers (a consultant, but the guy has set up some absolutely
wonderful and necessary scripts for us) whacked the user profile which had the
*.bks file. That is what broke it in the first place.

It took some research, but to deal with the issue of the job not finding the
drive or media - apparently it is necessary to end the schedule string with the
/um switch.

So, I think editing a backup script (changing paths), creating a new *.bks
file, etc, it will hopefully run early tomorrow morning.

Thanks for your patience, and I'll try to remember to let all know.

Subject: NTBackup will no longer run as a scheduled task

Greetings!

We have a library of substances on a server (really old - Dell PE-2650). It
has an Adaptec card and a Dell StoreVault(?) LTO2 drive. For years it has been
backing the library pre-dawn, M-F using NTBackup as a Scheduled Task.

[Windows 2003 SP2]

This broke last week. The Events log showed that the system was unable to find
the script associated with the job...

OK, I go and create the script again (in NTBackup, but finishing with
scheduling it to run weekly, each M-F). I right click it and select Run now.
NTBackup starts to open, then it vanishes. I check EventLogs, and I see no
errors.

I repeat the steps above running NTBackup manually, The backup process runs
with no issues.

Googling, I learned of Scheduled Tasks logs. This is not useful:

AnToxSubstances.job (ntbackup.exe)
Started 3/28/2012 1:45:01 AM
AnToxSubstances.job (ntbackup.exe)
Finished 3/28/2012 1:45:17 AM
Result: The task completed with an exit code of (0).

Other scheduled tasks appear to be running successfully.

So, why is it when I create a job in NTBackup, it runs if I click Run now;
but if I save it as a scheduled task (and then try to run it from the list of
tasks), it fails immediately?

Again, this had been running with no such issues for several years (up until
last week).

Thanks!

That's not feasible (3rd party to manage MS licensing) for our org. We're
~45 users.
I know it is my odd licensing pruchase[1] that triggered this. I just now
have to get all of my ducks into a tight row. They are pretty tight, but I
need to cross T's and dot my I's. The timing of this is about the worst it
could be as I'm ramping up into a busy time for me, while my organization
as a whole will be gearing down.

[1] I have, from a predecessor, SBS Cals without a server followed by my
own purchases of some versions of office 2007, but not at a level
consistent with the # of SBS Cals, and the recent purchase of Exchange
Server 2010 CALs, but without the purchase of Exchange Server 2010, as I
have a Retail license of Exchange Server 2010 available via our Action Pack
subscription. All these things together, from a stricly volume licensing
perspective looks odd, and I don't blame Microsoft for having a desire[2]
to investigate.
[2]I just blame them for investigating. I thought this was what BSA was
for, to be honest. *shrug* I'll deal, and we'll be fine. I'll just make
sure I put sufficient effort into the process upfront so as to minimize
questions from them later.

It doesn't get easy. My last round looked similar to yours:

-- Multiple players covering different products under different programs**

-- Multiple meetings to figure out who needed to handle what

-- Multiple processes for managing the invoicing (although the licences
 are in a single place)

We saved quite a bit of money.

Yes, and as I mentioned in my post, my Sony Blu-Ray player has no issues

How should I appoarch network printing.

We configure each printer to do raw TCP printing (port 9100), and
configure a corresponding Windows spooler port. We then configure a
printer object on Windows, loading all needed drivers. Client PCs all
print through the one Windows print server.

We disable all the other protocols/services/etc on the printers themselves.

As of late, I been having issues with 4100 and 4350 Universal printer

Subject: HP Printers 4100 , 4350, to 4700 etc + duplixers (printer
server and Drivers)

Hi group,

How are you people manging Driver Print Ques, and Printer servers on HP
printers.

Also in terms of 64 bit machines and 32 Bit. All running Windows 7
Enterprise.

Are people use the HP Printer Admin Tools, or just a simple Windows
Print Server, with shared pritners???

How should I appoarch network printing.

As of late, I been having issues with 4100 and 4350 Universal printer
drivers not printing correctly PDFS or even simple word / emails.

Any one having issues with Universal HP Drivers PCL5...

Thanks

Linux might look better, but is it, when you end up having a new set of

Hyjack - Linux in the Enterprise/Schools (was RE: Sophisticated Phising attempt?)

2012-03-29 Thread Matthew W. Ross
On the Linux in the News front, Linux has been doing well in the past few
days...

http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2012/03/red-hat/all/1

http://news.techeye.net/software/munich-saves-a-fortune-switching-to-linux

There are still some fairly basic hurdles that Linux needs to get over in order
to make it in Enterprise/Schools:

1. Centralized management improvements: My boss wants everything to be
point-and-click, so no CLI options would work here. If it can't be done in a
GUI, she won't go for it... because what if I leave and nobody else knows how
to fix things? And how do you deploy a printer to a lab? What about updating
Firefox in an entire school? Thus far, Webmin might be the best current
solution to this problem, but I can't webmin 20 computers at the same time as
far as I know.

2. Network home folders: Everybody loves that their documents are automatically
saved to the server... and we like not having to backup 1000+ desktops. Getting
this to work in Linux is no cakewalk. Just getting Linux to login using a
network LDAP server is difficult (Redhat's 'authconfig' utility is an
exception, but still no network home folders).

I wish I had the brain power and time to do these things, as I would try to fix
these seemingly basic problems. Alas, I do not.

RE: Hyjack - Linux in the Enterprise/Schools (was RE: Sophisticated Phising attempt?)

2012-03-29 Thread Michael B. Smith
If you really think that, then perhaps it's time for me to go back and take
another look at Kerio and other products.

When I last ran the hosting portion of an ISP (toward the end of 2007), we had
3 different email offerings. A free one, based on one of the free email
servers, which had low feature content (free to purchasers of other services
of course). One that was $1 / month per mailbox that was based on Icewarp's
Merak which had a number of additional features. And finally one based on
Exchange and LCS (at the time) that offered a HECK of a lot more features and
functionality.

If anything has developed to provide the capabilities of Exchange, including
the tight Integration with Outlook, Lync, SharePoint, IIS and other Microsoft
infrastructure products - then it certainly deserves a serious look.

If you really think that, then perhaps it's time for me to go back and take
another look at Kerio and other products.

When I last ran the hosting portion of an ISP (toward the end of 2007), we
had 3 different email offerings. A free one, based on one of the free email
servers, which had low feature content (free to purchasers of other
services of course). One that was $1 / month per mailbox that was based on
Icewarp's Merak which had a number of additional features. And finally one
based on Exchange and LCS (at the time) that offered a HECK of a lot more
 features and functionality.

If anything has developed to provide the capabilities of Exchange, including

Anyone out there having a problem with their NetFlix app on a Samsung TV
or Blu-Ray player this week? Seems very coincidental that it started right
after the European DST date of 3/25/2012. First noticed it on 3/26/2012
with my UN46C6400. Everything works great up until the loading screen.
Status bar never moves, and then about 30 seconds later you get a message
“We're having trouble playing this title right now. Please try again later
or select a different title. Internet connection is fine and other apps
work (VuDu, Amazon ).

Exchange and it ties nicely to things like BES and ActiveSync mobile devices.
They have some sort of Sharepoint-like product now too, and a repackaged
version of Asterisk for people who'd rather spend money instead of building a
PBX.

This is true, Exchange costs would be much less expensive for us thanks to the
EDU discounts. But exchange support costs are a complete unknown. Kerio support

Also, I'm talking about a mail server for ~350 users... not something for 5,000

RE: Adding an Exchange 2003 Front End server?

2012-03-29 Thread Kennedy, Jim
With all due respect, I think you should rethink your plan on putting Exchange
in the DMZ. If you want to move the connections out to the DMZ then put a proxy
out there that relay's the requests back to your inside server. For example an
ISA server/Forefront Threat Management Gateway.

I currently only have one Exchange 2003 standard server in my environment.
I would like to add an Exchange 2003 standard front endserver in a DMZ I am
creating.
What do I need to do?

One should never say the third hand. It should always be the gripping hand.

RE: Hyjack - Linux in the Enterprise/Schools (was RE: Sophisticated Phising attempt?)

2012-03-29 Thread Ken Schaefer
Just responding to a few posts concurrently:
I can't comment about schools, but enterprises need a lot more than what is
listed below.
Pretty much everything needs to be able to be automated.
And TBH 350 users is not an enterprise, it's a small/medium business. Somewhere
at 10K+ seats are you starting to look at enterprise, depending on
industry/technology

In terms of Exchange vs Kerio: Kerio's a mailserver. Outlook+Exchange is a lot
more than that, and offers a lot more features than Kerio does. You might not
need those features, or know what they are, but that doesn't mean that they
aren't useful to other people. There probably isn't a single large organisation
in the world that doesn't run on Notes/Exchange/Groupwise or similar enterprise
messaging/collaboration platform.

Cheers
Ken

Phising attempt?)

RE: Hyjack - Linux in the Enterprise/Schools (was RE: Sophisticated Phising attempt?)

2012-03-29 Thread Joseph L. Casale

order to make it in Enterprise/Schools:

 1. Centralized management improvements: My boss wants everything to be
point-and-click, so no CLI options would work here.

This statement negates the first? Automate, but you want shinny clicky stuff?
Frankly, in with windows
if it doesn't have a cli alternative, I discount it. It only does excel in
Enterprise for these reasons where in
reality what your boss wants is what doesn't.

If it can't be done in a GUI, she won't go for it... because what if I leave
and nobody else knows how to fix things?

No comment... So what she wants is not to learn a technology, but to see a gui
that points her along so
she just has to click next, next, next and not know what she's doing? Wow...

And how do you deploy a printer to a lab? What about updating Firefox in an
 entire school?

Trivial in linux. By design even... Updates are something still not as perfect
in Windows as it is in Linux.
From initial deployment even, I've written kickstarts that not only deployed
the machine but setup every
running daemon and configured it 100% that I didn't need to back those servers
up, if they failed I redeployed
in mere minutes. Given all the configuration management tools that exist, the
options here limitless.

Thus far, Webmin might be the best current solution to this problem, but I
 can't webmin 20 computers
at the same time as far as I know.

Honestly bud, no real Linux admin uses webmin, and for what its worth, I have
never even setup a Linux
server with a gui, oh I worked on one in a rhel class once:)

 2. Network home folders: Everybody loves that their documents are
 automatically saved to the server...
and we like not having to backup 1000+ desktops. Getting this to work in
 Linux is no cakewalk.

It is actually, you simply don't how. Automount to name one of several ways
that come to mind?

I am fine that you don't like Linux, thats cool, but your statements are all
factually incorrect.
If you just say Linux sucks because you don't like it, thats valid and i can
dig it. However it excels
in all the areas you point out in reality.
