RE: windows phone 8

2012-11-27 Thread Tim Vander Kooi
I am not sure about emulators.
As for the lock screen, you can personalize it many different ways, but one
option is to have weather as the background with "app updates" on it. You can
have up to 5 apps with updates on it. I for instance have 3 different email
accounts, texts and phone calls on mine. You also have battery, network, and
ringer statuses all displayed on the lock screen. You can also set personal
photos and other apps like Facebook as your lock screen instead of weather if
you want to.

First of all, any online emulators? That would answer a gazillion questions I

So here's my main question:

Outside temp

you can access.
And I haven't even had to unlock my phone yet...

Can this quick visibility also be easily achieved on a Win8 phone? If so, I'd

You need Windows 8 Pro for the Client HyperV but I think that is the
emulator. It runs as a virtual machine.

Outside temp - Lots of weather apps. Temp on live tile on screen

Forecast - see weather app

Upcoming meetings / calendar - can be on lock screen and live tile

Unread email/SMS count - on lock screen and live tile

Battery level - there is a battery level indicator or an App if you want
more info (the app can post on lock screen)

And with one gesture I can read all my notifications. - no notification
center. Devs said they ran out of time, expected q1 next year.

I was going to post a screen shot of my phone but instead realized that MS
has several short videos about this already. Yes they are for ad campaigns
but they are also accurate. Towards the end of the videos they show you
the different configuration of tiles.

I say that the newer wp8 maps are more accurate then the focus wp7 but
that may be better radio's in the Nokia. Also like the Nokia Drive which

No to these questions.

Actually it all seems centered around time sync problem that I have no idea the
cause of. It seems the 2003 PDCe server developed a problem with access denied
issues and that cascaded time sync errors to everything else. The 2 2000 DCs
show the correct amount of uptime based on them being rebooted yesterday. The
2003 DCs however show correct time and date, but say uptime 4300+ days after
their reboot. They are syncing with time server now, but clearly still have an
issue. That is probably what is causing the one way replicate problem between
just the 2 2003 DCs. I can actually replicate either one to a 2000 DC and then
replicate that to the server that won?t replicate from the PDCe and changes
show up. Still haven?t figured the best way to rectify the issue. I definitely
do not favor a transfer of roles and dcpromo to demote and then promote again.

No.

However, I just discovered that when I try to do a manual replication on one

2012-11-27 Thread rodtrent
The one thing WP8 doesn’t have, and I wish it did, was a notification app. The
tiles show their own respective notifications, and notifications pop-up on the
lock screen as they come in. But, if you miss a notification, there’s no area
to view all the live notifications at a glance. I'm sure someone will write an
app for it eventually.

So here’s my main question:

I’m very accustomed to accessing all my important information at a quick glance
on my lockscreen (without even unlocking my phone). Just a quick tap of the
power button I can view:

Outside temp

Forecast

Upcoming meetings / calendar

Unread email/SMS count

Battery level

And with one gesture I can read all my notifications.

There are many other options too. Pretty much anything you can put in a widget,
you can access.

And I haven’t even had to unlock my phone yet…

Can this quick visibility also be easily achieved on a Win8 phone? If so, I’d
seriously consider it.

So far my WP8 maps have placed me at a truer location than my Android phone
does. Android is usually accurate within a half block, WP8 puts me right where
I am, but that is me in this city so YMMV. Driving directions have been
basically the same, and I must admit to never having tried the traffic part of

Gosh, been following this thread closely, must say I’m very eager to give a
Windows Phone another go now.

First of all, any online emulators? That would answer a gazillion questions
I and others have. I know with Android you can download a SDK and run the
OS in a virtual machine. Anything similar?

So here’s my main question:

I’m very accustomed to accessing all my important information at a quick
glance on my lockscreen (without even unlocking my phone). Just a quick tap
of the power button I can view:

Outside temp

Forecast

Upcoming meetings / calendar

Unread email/SMS count

Battery level

And with one gesture I can read all my notifications.

There are many other options too. Pretty much anything you can put in a
widget, you can access.

And I haven’t even had to unlock my phone yet…

Can this quick visibility also be easily achieved on a Win8 phone? If so,
I’d seriously consider it.

Interestingly, On our VLSC site, the keys are the same between Enterprise and
Pro, it's the ISO that's different. Additionally, on the VLSC site Win8 Pro is
under the "Windows" category for keys/downloads, but Win8 Enterprise is under
"Software Assurance" area.

Re: Obama's tech team used open source and some Microsoft software to fuel its victory | Computerworld Blogs

2012-11-27 Thread Kurt Buff
I think it is a mistake to place much credence in IT spend or
performance as a metric for success in political campaigns.

As I despise the platforms and approaches of both Obama and Romney, I
think I can speak more directly to the impact of IT - basically nil.

All politics is local, and it looks as if Obama had more feet on the
street, more door knockers, and more appeal to the plebians in his
platform.

Romney's message and approach was simply wrong for the campaign - too
elitist and no specifics for people to rally around.

Given that Obama spent twice the money on the campaign, and had half
the IT spend, I'd say that Obama's ability to spend money elsewhere,
particularly in local GOTV efforts, was much more telling.

No to these questions.

Actually it all seems centered around time sync problem that I have no
idea the cause of. It seems the 2003 PDCe server developed a problem
with access denied issues and that cascaded time sync errors to
everything else. The 2 2000 DCs show the correct amount of uptime based
on them being rebooted yesterday. The 2003 DCs however show correct time
and date, but say uptime 4300+ days after their reboot. They are syncing
with time server now, but clearly still have an issue. That is probably
what is causing the one way replicate problem between just the 2 2003
DCs. I can actually replicate either one to a 2000 DC and then replicate
that to the server that won?t replicate from the PDCe and changes show
up. Still haven?t figured the best way to rectify the issue. I
definitely do not favor a transfer of roles and dcpromo to demote and

I mostly watch and learn, but today a question. Today I had an issue I can?t
find any reason for.

Mixed 2000-2003 domain. 2 of each. All the roles have been moved to the 2003
DCs, except time server. Fully patched.

Out of nowhere I started getting SCOM alerts from 2 of the DCs that various DC
functions were failing when contacting one of the 2003 DCs. The 2 2000 servers
could be RDP, but not accessed via MMC for services, etc. from a Win7

still the time server. Neither of the 2003 DCs could update time with it having
a server error 5, access denied error. The other 2000 DC could update time
fine. Logins to various internal systems and DFS links started to fail with
access denied errors.

Eventually I rebooted the 2003 DC with the PDCe role and everything started to
come back. There were no Directory Service errors or warnings in the event log
at or before this happened. At the time this started this DC had system errors
that the other 2003 DC had a time in the future, however it did not. In the
application log there were errors

I mostly watch and learn, but today a question. Today I had an issue I can?t
find any reason for.

Mixed 2000-2003 domain. 2 of each. All the roles have been moved to the 2003
DCs, except time server. Fully patched.

Out of nowhere I started getting SCOM alerts from 2 of the DCs that various DC
functions were failing when contacting one of the 2003 DCs. The 2 2000 servers
could be RDP, but not accessed via MMC for services, etc. from a Win7
workstation. I saw various KCC NTDS Replication related errors on one of the
2003 DCs. I could attach to them via RPC (MMC) though. One of the 2000 DCs is
still the time server.

In the
application log there were errors when it started for ID 1058, Windows cannot
access the file gpt.ini for GPO?? and ending with ?(There is a time and/or date
difference between the client and server. ). Group Policy processing aborted.?

All of the other DCs showed nothing other than the breakdown between them and

I downloaded the "Here" app from nokia on iOS. It's a quite decent map app, as
far as I can tell. I add it to my list of tried-and-accepted map apps:

Here
Google Maps(RIP)
Bing Maps
Waze
Mapquest

Are the maps still lacking since they switched to using Nokia maps in the
back end for wp8?
