MS KB98344 SharePoint Security Update

2010-06-17 Thread Bill Lambert
I installed this security update as part of the June patches on my test
SharePoint Services 3 machine. Since then Central Admin is displaying
404 and I'm getting "Cannot connect to the configuration database" when
trying to access the SharePoint sites.

Was wondering if anyone else has seen this and knows a solution before I
call MS.

Thanks.

The week I came home from VN my dad co-signed for a 69 Nova SS 350. It was
$3300.00 out the door. Beefed it up some (650cfm Holly, Hurst shifter, Headman
Headers with Thrush mufflers, ¾ race cam, Detroit Locker clutch, 4:13 rear end,
fat tires, Crager wheels ) and loved that car...it was sweet looking and fast!
Wish I would have kept it. Gas was less than 50 cents a gallon then.

I had a similar experience with trouble shooting a friend's home

get the Netgear to keep a consistent connection; including pushing the

I'm pretty sure the Netgear was an 802.11G router. The Dell laptop has a
Dell Wireless Dual-Band WLAN card in it (on-board.) The Desktop machine
had an Edimax EX-7128G 802.11 b/g card installed. Once I got the Linksys
in, it connected right up and even got an IP address. Not to mention
that the client said his Vista laptop had problems getting onto the
internet that morning wirelessly.

I've had problems with Netgear wireless routers before and that's part
of the reason I will refuse to use Netgear wireless routers in the
future. Wired, sure. Wireless, no.

I use it. Decent package IF you don't have any WMI problems. The Spiceworks
"Community" is an unusual on-line place, not like any of the other social
networks I've seen, and you'll need to join to learn about how to use it well.

How many computers and sites do you need to inventory?

RE: Sophos vs. Vipre Enterprise

2010-04-21 Thread Bill Lambert
I've been using Sophos on desktops for 10 years and love it. When I bought it
back then Sophos would allow all my employees to have it on their home
computers at no additional cost. I'm not sure they offer that anymore though
as they have changed their marketing to go through 3rd party partners; I don't
believe you can buy direct anymore.

I admin around 100 machines. The UI is intuitive and full of information. It
has dashboards for quick reviews of the systems. I have seen Sophos catch
things that have gotten through McAfee and Symantec on Exchange. We have never
had a network wide breakout nor a signature file that caused problems.

Frankly because I am pleased with Sophos, I've not considered any other vendor.

I see the marketing materials comparing Vipre with Symantec and McAfee. I've

Believe me, I don't.

But an email about a joke played is much different than an email about a
joke played and some people not getting it.

Pranking is an art, though. Amateurs tend to show up on a day like
today.

For example, for my boss's 30th we filled her office up with so many
baloons that she couldn't open the door.

Now that's a prank.

Really? Because it's some arbitrary date?

I get the joke, it's mildly funny. I do play jokes on my users,
selected users who'd get the joke, one of them being a senior owner, the
other senior owner, not so much. I also like to do it when they're not
expecting it. The one's who would get the joke would be more on guard
today, of all days.

Pranking en masse is potentially unwise, given the range of users and
where they might be in the corporate heirarchy. The OP lamented that
his users didn't get the joke. I suggested why I don't prank everyone,
and why most people may not get it, or even find it unfunny.

I don't play tricks on my users (en masse) for this very reason.

Consider, they're wrapped up in doing their jobs. Most people, IT
included forget what it takes for someone else to do their job
effectively. We know they need a computer and a certain set of apps
that perform in a certain way, but beyond that, we're not doing their
job, so we don't know what their work actually entails. Why would we
expect our users to know what is and is not possible to be done?

Very often, I'm one of the very few in my office who knows what IT can
do (easily, with our resources). For illustration, remember back to a
time when someone has asked you to do something they think should be
easy for you to do, but you know that it will be quite a challenging
task which will consume a lot of time.

excitement of administering Exchange and other general Windows 'stuff' (read:
I took the "Management Labotomy").

Well...that ship has sailed, I spent a couple of months searching...and
yesterday I started my new adventure. In my new role, I'll have a lot more
hands-on opportunities, in addition to managing a small team of folks for a
rapidly growing company. One of my first orders of business was to

RPC/HTTPS issue

Hello again, all...

I have a user who gets a repeating login screen on his laptop when I try

stopping this connection on that laptop? I don't even know where to

rpc over https user problem

2010-02-16 Thread Bill Lambert
Hello all...

I've installed a new Exchange 2003 box and I'm in the process of moving
users over to the new one. All is going well but for one user. I've
moved his mailbox and he can get to his email box fine. When I try to
configure him for rpc, I get a repeating login screen. Accessing OWA
over the internet is fine too. All other rpc users have been connecting
fine since I moved their mailboxes. Google didn't come up with anything
specific to this problem.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

He has XP pro with Outlook 2007.

Thanks for any tips!

There's no incompatibility and the ones from 2003 can be used in 2007.
You could create a new one of course and then just drag and drop the
contents.

Since it's an archive file, I wouldn't use File > Open. I would keep it
as an archive and just point Outlook to it so it can continue to archive
to the same file.

Maybe I'm misreading, but wouldn't just opening the PST file be
sufficient?  File->Open->Outlook Data File?

Questions I don't know the answers to which might affect the
validity of my answer: whether there is a difference in PST files from
2003 to 2007 and if they are incompatible for some reason. Or if the
archive was create in anticipation of the move, for some reason.

RE: a little gun shy (also sent to the Exchange list)

2010-01-29 Thread Bill Lambert
Thanks, gents, for the replies and article from Sean. Very helpful.

Now I'm at the point where I am installing E2K3 on the new box. Right
after the licensing agreement page, I get a screen that says "The
Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services component
requires a user name, domain, and password for the existing Exchange 5.5
installation service account. Type the information in the fields
below". Below that is a grayed out field for both Username and Domain.
The Password is available but I have no idea what password it wants. If
I try to click next without a password (or a guessed password) I get a
window that says "This account must be valid before continuing".

I'm adding this server to an org that only has one other Exchange 2003
server. Google didn't find anything relevant. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks again in advance!

Not necessarily a step-by-step guide, but pretty good information:
http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp.

To answer your question, there's no forest/domain prep required. The new
server will automatically join your existing organization.

a little gun shy (also sent to the Exchange list)

2010-01-28 Thread Bill Lambert
Hello all...

I have new hardware onto which I want to move my Exchange server. I'm
trying to find specific instructions on this but I'm getting more
confused the more I search. I will be using the move user method; that
is, I want to build the new box in the same org and use the move user
wizard to swing the users over. Then eventually, remove the old server.

I have very basic questions like do I have to run forest and domain prep
to add a server to the org?

I hope someone has a link to a step by step...or good advice.

Thanks a million in advance!

Environment is:

Existing Exchange 2003 Enterprise is on W2K3 Standard server. This
server is also a domain controller and has Groupshield on it as well.
It will remain a DC.

New server has W2K3 Enterprise and that's all. It will not be a DC.

SC Query

2010-01-26 Thread Bill Lambert
Hi All...

I'm having trouble with the print spooler stopping on a print server.
I'm trying the SC query command to find the exit code but the command
returns 'the specified service does not exist as an installed service'.
I've tried sc query print spooler, sc query spoolsv but get the same
results. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

AD Tool

2009-12-16 Thread Bill Lambert
Hi all...

I'm looking at purchasing AD Manager Plus Professional (
http://www.manageengine.com/products/ad-manager/index.html) but it is
priced as a subscription at $795/year. Nice tool though.

Was wondering if anyone could recommend a similar tool with one-time
pricing.

Thanks for any advice!

Bill,

Can you this -

STARTNETSCREEN.BAT

net stop "Cisco Systems, Inc. VPN Service"

net start "SafeNet IKE Service"

net start "SafeNet Monitor Service"

net start "NetScreen-Remote Security Client"

"C:\Program Files\Juniper\NetScreen-Remote\SafeCfg.exe"

pause

STARTCISCO.BAT

net stop "SafeNet IKE Service"

net stop "SafeNet Monitor Service"

net stop "NetScreen-Remote Security Client"

taskkill /f SafeCfg.exe

net start "Cisco Systems, Inc. VPN Service"

pause

First one has to uninstall NetScreen VPN completely. Then install Cisco
VPN.

Netscreen VPN needs to be installed on top of Cisco. The two bat files
are

used to start and stop respective VPN. By default the services for both
need

been to set to "manual" instead of "Automatic" type.

I was at a seminar yesterday put on by Sunbelt and during a break I had
a chance to talk to one of the presenters and told him of a recent
malware incident I'd cleaned up. He'd never heard of such a trick before
so I thought I'd bring it to y'all's attention so you can be on the
lookout for it. Basically it was the same old malware that's been going
around with the Antivirus Pro sort of stuff, but the twist was that even
using Malware Bytes we were not able to get rid of it. After I was
poking around a bit, (I don't recall why I was looking at the root of
C:, but I was) I noticed a batch file in the root of the C: drive that,
when I opened it and looked at it, it created a bunch of scheduled tasks
to re-download the malware/adware. I wised up and deleted that file,
then went into the Scheduled Tasks and deleted all the malware-created
scheduled tasks. Then I was able to successfully clean the stuff out!

What really got us was that Malware Bytes would clean it, then say it
needed to reboot to finish, and then as soon as we came back, the fake
antivirus was right back there. What I believe it was doing was
re-downloading itself from the internet each time we cleaned it. So,
anyway, if you guys ever have a problem like this, it wouldn't hurt to
check the scheduled tasks!

Wireless woes...

2009-10-14 Thread Bill Lambert
Hello all...

We've moved to new offices and it's our first time with a training room.
I've set up our first lot of PC's as members of our domain but the
students will only have privileges to log onto the machines locally and
no ability to browse our network.

Anyway, all of the training PC's are on our wireless network and we
would like to stay that way. However I cannot get the AV updates to get
pushed from our server and I'm pretty sure WSUS won't work either. I'm
assuming it's because the wireless connection times out even though I
have the machines logged in with the local student user and all
hibernation, power and standby settings are set to 'never'.

Is there a way to keep wireless connections on even when there is no
user logged into the machine? Maybe some reg hack? I may not be using
the correct search criteria but noting of substance came back from
Google.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

RE: Good NT sysadmin list?

2009-08-28 Thread Bill Lambert
I think I may be speaking for many mostly silent admins here, but I love
this list. I run a small but growing shop and it's just me on the
Windows side of things. I don't contribute much to the list so I try
to keep my questions for when I'm really stuck on something. And I have
to tell you, this list has saved my ass on more than a few occasions and
I have learned much from watching the threads on many, many topics.

The people here have always been kind and generous with their answers.
The banter is just fine with me because of the reasons others have
spoken to, and, I have no problem managing my inbox.

read the threads I want to read, and just archive the rest. Every once

3500 unread messages in my inbox.

I have to use Loathsome Notes 7 to read this list; there is no thread
view. Nor sorting on subject. To me, it all comes in a long, flat,
received-order core-dump. :-)

While I wouldn't mind more signal, I've been on this list for like 8
years, and 2 jobs. It can be aggravating, but (eventually) I always come
back.

I'm a huge DT fan as is my son.  I bought him a meet and greet with DT for last

Thanks, all, for the responses...you guys are the best!

I tried all of your solutions but nothing worked. Then I found buried
deep in the Release Notes for the app (not in the system requirements
that I would think would be more intuitive) that you have to change a
specific setting in a properties file. Specifically it was changing the
Java Virtual Machine memory heap from the default of 1020mb to something
lower. I changed it to 512mb and that did it!

Is it me or does Cisco stuff seem overly complicated?

Anyway, thanks a million for all your suggestions.

I know this may be a long shot but I figured it doesn't hurt to ask...

I've just installed the Cisco Configuration Assistant (v 2) on my pc.
We are going to install a Cisco wireless solution. Anyway, the install
went well but when I try to launch it, I get this message from the Java
Virtual Machine Launcher: 'Could not create the Java virtual machine'.
I searched Cisco and Googled but couldn't find anything specific to
this.

Anyone have advice on how to fix this?

I have to laugh at the irony of this discussion. Hey Kim, have you
heard the radio advertisements for this place?

http://mycomputercareer.com/

I wish I could record the audio of this radio ad so yall could hear it.
Basically they are saying that even in a down economy all companies
still need computer support and you can earn more money than you've ever
earned before and in as little as three months have the certifications
that employers are looking for. Stimulus money is available and
deferred student loans are available.

I just want to scream whenever I hear this ad, especially since I'm
hearing it on our local Christian radio station, talk about false
advertising (IMNSHO).

The Dallas/Ft. Worth area has not really been hit so bad in this
economy, but it's not great. Yeah, I just had my annual review and got
a great raise, but here at our organization, at the first of the year,
management voluntarily elected to forgo their raises for this
yeartraining budget is non-existent and new hardware is on an as
needed basis and it has to be really needed. I'm grateful to have a
good job, and for management that sees the long-term benefits of making
a personal sacrifice that will benefit their employees and ultimately
them. Happy employees = loyal employees. It's a win-win deal for all.

Chris,

It's tough out there no doubt and I feel your pain, many of us that are
employed are right there with you. Salary cuts, benefit cost increases,
insurance coverage decreases, 401(k)s turning into 101(k)s, furloughs,

understand, but you're standing there with an FULL TIME OFFER LETTER.
To many IT guys that are stupid smart are now bagging groceries...

I encourage everyone in this situation to look long term; the here and

Sure, they're behind logins. But once people download them, they show

it's always reported in the tech blogs.

Hi Guys, here is an Item in WServerNews today:

 * The 40 Most Popular Tools For Your System Admin Bag

You may be aware of the very popular NTSYSADMIN list that Sunbelt has
hosted for almost 10 year. This is a list where all admin related topics
are discussed, and where peers help each other out. Here is a posting.
Matt Plahtinsky said: "I am always looking for cool new tools to add to
my
tool bag that I take with me to clients. Here is a list of some of my
most used tools. If you have some tools that you use a lot please
share."

There were dozens of replies, and it's always a hassle to read through
all these separate emails so I spent a few hours to clean it up, and
sort
them alphabetically. So without further ado, here is the list!

Mremote

Afternoon all

Anyone else using MRemote (http://www.mremote.org/wiki/)? Very useful
for consolidating window sprawl, lets me connect to RDP sessions, web
interfaces, putty sessions, DRACs, etc. from one tabbed window. However
the ICA connections only seem able to connect to a Citrix server
desktop, anyone know how to get it to connect to a published application
(if at all)?

I am trying to find documentation and/or websites, just thought I would
throw it out there in case any of the gurus have a quick answer to save
my tired eyes :-)

TIA

Well there is a cheap solution and it is not real time. Write a script
to go to each DHCP server and copy the DHCP backup folder to a central
location. That backup is generated daily and in the event you lose a
DHCP server you could put DHCP on another server and restore the backup
files. If you use a system with a different IP you will have to update
the IP Helper on the switches that have the VLAN the server serves.

RE: Fax services

2009-06-23 Thread Bill Lambert
Hi everyone...

I started that thread about faxes a week or so ago. I was asking for
opinions about services like eFax as a desktop solution and there were
many replies with different approaches including fax servers.

Lucky stiff! We still have one and for the life of me I don't
understand why. We get more fax spam than legit faxes. Most people we
do business with don't use faxes any more.

VMware newbie

2009-06-18 Thread Bill Lambert
Hello all...

We are in the early stages of planning to consolidate some W2K3 servers
on some beefy hardware. We are going to use VMware (ESXI to begin with)
as other corporate offices use it and it's kind of mandated.

I have a couple of questions...If I install the 64 bit version of ESXI
on bare metal, can W2K3 32 bit servers run on it? When it comes to
backing up the guests using BUE 12.0, can I use my Windows Server agents
or do I need something else? I've spent too many hours on hold with
Symantec for an answer.

Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

HIPAA is a set of *recommendations* for the standard of security, but there
are few, if any granular, detail level requirements ...

HIPAA is a mess, and it's been a while for me, but as I recall, the
regulations generally don't require specific mechanisms like encryption for
particular tasks. You have to take steps to protect it. You don't have to
be crazy.

Chances are they're just talking out of their rectum. Consultants do that
a lot. It's especially common when it comes to compliance; the consults go
for overkill "to be safe".

Ask them to quote chapter and verse from an actual law or regulation.
When they can't, thank them for the suggestion and move on to the next item.

One of the three servers that had the problem after the MS upgrades blue
screened last night with a device driver error (the message said it
could not determine the driver or device responsible). May not be
related to the updates, but it has been doing fine for a year. Then the
upgrades, then the problem.

Has anyone else sent his continuing behavior?

RE: Faxing solution

2009-06-13 Thread Bill Lambert
Hi Murray...

I'm with you on this one for sure...unfortunately our customers are
hospitals and insurance companies and they insist on faxing even though
we do have an encrypted email system required by HIPAA. Some companies
just are resistant to change I guess.

Well, I'm impressed or should I be depressed that people are still using
fax "technology". We have a couple of fax machines, but it's rare that
they get used what with something called email. When I started working
here 13 years ago, the faxes got used a lot, but over the years it's
been reduced to a minimum. We've found that most documents begin life on
a computer, so there's not much benefit to using fax. Has anyone
considered other alternatives to faxing?

I've used both FaxMaker and RightFax in past lives. FaxMaker was great
for both in and outbound faxing while RightFax was very expensive and
comparatively a huge pain in the keister to administer. It did work
though if you happen to have extra dollars that you feel you must throw
around. YMMV

We use GFI FaxMaker. Never had any major problems with it, but when we
did found the support to be good. We don't have that kind of volume,
though, and only use it for outbound. The inbound features sound good,
but we haven't used them.

Hello all...

We are currently faxing about 3000 pages a month and receiving around
1000. Most of the outbound faxes are documents that are printed first
then faxed. I'm seeking a better solution and have talked to eFax but
they seem pricey. Can you let me know what you use for a fax solution
or recommend a vendor?

Thanks!
