RE: satellite connection
The biggest problem with Satellite IP networks is rather high latency. The last time I tried a test ping times ran into the 1500+ msec range. Thats 1.5 Seconds. So that might work for background file transfers, e-mail SMTP traffic, etc. but nothing with human interaction. Bandwidth can be large but because of delays not suitable for some of todays applications such as Terminal Server, VPN or not. The VPN probably has problems because of the latency. You would need to tune IP for this environment in most cases. RE: IP Scanner that finds unused IPs?
Always question when they tell you you can't use DHCP... If what they mean is that you must assign specific IP's to specific machines - what would you rather do? Manually assign IP's and 3-6 other settings for DNS/WINS/DFGW OR USE reservation tied to a MAC address to just have it all handed down It is a lot easier to just bring up a PC and then cut and past a reservation into DHCP. If DFGW needs to change, etc - change it one place not 100..etc. Most people that say you can't use DHCP - just don't know how to use it! Just what I needed! Thanks so much! I am not versed at all in scripting and with only myself supporting 10 servers and 200+ users (and having to be the webmaster for the Intranet) I really don't have time to learn. We can't use DHCP for reasons that come from a higher level than my division and I have a software development department that is always screaming for IP addresses on my nearly maxed class C. Sometimes the old spreadsheet with all the ip info just isn't as up to date as it should be. Thanks again for all the help from everyone. Looking for a tool that will scan my Class C and report which IPs are currently NOT in use. Have found plenty of tools that report what is live. Anyone have a tool like that? Want to use it to verify available static IP addresses.
