RE: Utility to Access all Registry Keys remotely

2009-01-05 Thread David James
If you connect to the admin on that workstation share you can browse to the
%systemroot%\system32\config folder and see all the hives. In regedit click on
HKLM or HLC and the choose file-load hive, then open them from that admin
share. If you need the ntuser.dat of a user it's in the documents and settings
for that user.

Does anyone know of a utility/tool whereby you can remotely access all
the various HKey registry areas? Specifically, we need to access
HKey_Current_User.

Thanks, Terri

Enabling File and Folder Compression

2009-01-05 Thread David James
Can anyone share experiences on enabling file and folder compression in
Vista and whether or not the old rules apply about speeding up performance
on systems by doing so? There doesn't seem to be a lot of information or
real world testing talking about it. I realize the NTFS version is 3.1
still, but with features like BitLocker in Vista, I'm sure there are some
underlying changes. I can't remember where I read 'way back when' that
compression sped up / tweaked the system, but any links I can use to
document pros/cons would be appreciated.

I could be wrong, but a 1080p HDTV is basically like a 1920x1080 monitor or
a 720p is 1280x720 that you can't change the resolution on. I infer It from
this:

True A-V geeks will likely chime in here.

The p vs i discussions remind me of the early SVGA days where some
monitors were interlaced and other non-interlaced (non-interlaced being the
better choice), nowadays we hear progressive instead of non-interlaced.

RE: LogMeIn

2008-12-30 Thread David James
LogMeInRescue FTW for supporting remote users.

Sonicwall SSL VPN Products for remote access. Using the Java or ActiveX RDP
agents provide a more productive user experience than logmein free.

In logmein free's defense as a security measure... I had a customer who
used logmein on their systems, it was a small business. Someone stole a
computer, and since LogMeIn auto connects from anywhere on the net, they
were able to track the system down. Kind of a free lowjack utility.

Before I worked for myself, I would have argued that software like this was
not useful, but it has it's place in the SMB. The corporate compliance set
forbids it, but I have found that the ultimate question is how productive
your users are, and how secure are their passwords. LogMeIn is just another
door to the building, another key to keep track of, so depending on the
business type/model, and it's obligations for compliance, it may or may not
have its place. I know lots of network admins who keep it on their servers
but yell at every user that wants to use it. Sometimes productivity demands
it. If you've got a user who needs to print at home to a Multifunction
device to be more productive, sometimes logmein pro is the best solution,
since RDP doesn't support certain printers. In these rare cases, a simple
signed policy will suffice to cover your ___.

It's about helping your users use technology to be more productive, not
having a power trip. The company must survive tight economic times, so use
all your tools to provide them ways to produce from anywhere at anytime, and
you'll be a hero to your users and company management.

what people's point against logmein is. I'm just saying, you inherently

Traditional searches will be limited, especially if want to search within

Right, but it has to be a searchable pdf. For batch processes OCR is how
you make those files searchable.

Huh? The Google appliance does search within files. Including PDF. For MS
search (desktop or server) you can get a filter for PDF. Adobe has
iFilters, but the filter from FoxIT is recommended.

Of course, it depends on how the PDF was created. If the file was just
scanned from paper into PDF, it will not search as the PDF is just an image.
However, if it was created from a file (Word or something) and then create
the PDF, it will work just fine.

different version than the administrator. You need to reinstall the ODBC
components to ensure proper operation.

I checked out the drivers and there are some with old version. I am trying

other. Where would I find the latest version of the ODBC components. I
checked M$'s site and found on MDAC 2.1, 2.5 2.6. Am I supposed to be
using any of these? let me know. TIA!!!

My real question concerns their insistence that he must have a static IP

You'll have to use Sysprep, but I think you can do it. It all depends on
how new the machine is, the HAL needs to be 2000 compliant. You'll have to
read up on sysprep, because it can load different IDE controller types. To
answer your question, Ghost 2002 will work, and does so quite nicely. I use

Our Offices are located in two cities, one single domain.
So far we would use something like CityName-Department-User Real Name
(where city name and department are abbrevations) to name workstations.

Usually the NT Names are the users Company ID, which is unique.

I was wondering how you guys/girls are naming your workstations and users.

I disagree.
You can edit the sysprep.inf file and include drivers for anything you want.
It will detect them with the PNP switch when you run sysprep.
You can also join a domain with editing the sysprep.inf file.

I have a Win2k RAS server set up with 8 incoming lines. We have mostly
Win9x clients dialing in, but some Win2k/NT clients also. I have used both
DHCP relaying set up to hand them an IP address from the DHCP server and a
static pool of IP's to hand to the clients. Right now it's using the DHCP.

I find that many of the Win9x clients will get an IP address, and also use
that IP address as their gateway. The problem with that is obviously that
when they need to access resources outside of the subnet that the RAS server
is on, they're out of luck.

Why the heck would these machines use the IP addresses they are being
assigned as the gateway and what do I do to fix it?

Any assistance would be appreciated here folksThanks

User tries to login into the domain, he gets the message You are not
allowed to logon from this workstation. But there's no problem for Domain
administrators to logon from this 95box.

This PC is connected to a hub which is connected to the switch. If I hook up
the PC directly to the switch(Through the patch panel), Users are able to
login.

There are no workstation restrictions for the user.

Any ideas would be of great help.

Thanks in advance
Pradeep Jose

I have tried reinstalling the OS, moved the PC and put up a new one with a
different NIC. The new PC shows the problem also. Nothing works.

After putting up with the new NIC and deleting the entry from the WINS
table, the user is able to login but then, after the first login, he is not
able to login anymore.

Could it be with the hub or the entry in the WINS???

Thanks

Sounds like the hub, cabling, or NIC.
Troubleshoot!
Last resort you could hook up a different PC to that spot, see if it
happens. Or, you could get a real OS.

Yeah,
I've had this problem before. Usually it's a database problem.
You'll need to defrag it, run eseutil. There are some good articles from
MS on this too.
First
thing you need to do is a defrag though. That should fix it if it's a
problem like I was having.

Quick Question

2001-09-24 Thread David James

Hi,
I changed our firewall IP address on Friday. It's a Checkpoint Firewall-1.
Today, everything works great except some of my users like to check hotmail
email accounts, and we can't get any of the hotmail or passport sites to
pull up. Some of my buddies say that their hotmail is working great.
Any idea why changing my IP would not allow hotmail to work?
Thanks in advance.

I've been having some problems with a cdrom drive under Windows 2000.
Sometimes when I insert a cd into the cdrom drive it will not get
recognized. I've tried 10 known good cds and none of them will work. (ie
the label and files do not show up in explorer). I then reboot the machine
and try the same 10 cds again and this time they all appear in explorer. I
did some searching and really didn't find much. Any thoughts?

RE: IIS with SQL?

2001-09-21 Thread David James

It sounds like that server is trying to connect to the SQL server, but there
may be some DCOM security issues.
Run dcomcnfg and check all the permissions, it will list them by services.
PS: You'll have to run it from both machines to get a true idea if IIS and
SQL are meshing.

Natively to SQL there shouldn't be any reason to involve IIS, however not
knowing your environment it's hard to say. Is the client connecting via an
browser interface? The possibilities are nearly endless...

Attached is an article that may help point you in the right direction.

Subject: IIS with SQL?

I have an NT server that I inherited about four months
ago (long story). It's sole purpose is to house a
database that is updated infrequently. There are a
very few people that connect directly to it maybe once
or twice a month. They are not users on the system.
Quite frankly, I have no idea about the mechanics of
how these people connect, but I assumed that IIS must
have something to do with the process. I shut down
IIS on Tuesday when Nimda was new. I had the patches
applied to IIS, so Nimda should not have effected me
anyway.

Anyway, there is never any information in the IIS log
files when a user connects to SQL. A user has
connected during the time that I have had IIS services
shut down. However, I get a constant error in the
system log that says with event ID 10005 --

DCOM got error, The specified service is disabled and
cannot be started attempting to start the service
IISAdmin with arguments in order to run server.

What does this error mean, and is there any reason for
me to run IIS for SQL connection? I would greatly
appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

Thank you,
Higgins

After several attempts to get rid of this virus I am still not able to see

is happening on the exchange server. The intranet server seems to be clear
of viruses but whereas users can access the internet, they cannot access the

I
can vouch for that, I've seen it as well...several times. We use TS on
the servers, but we still need Remote Control on some of the 2K Pro
workstations.
You MUST update from v9.0 to 9.2before rebooting.
LiveUpdate will do this for you. If this is what happened, we've fixed
it on workstations (IDE) by removing the HDD, setting it up as a slave on a
known-good machine and copying somefiles to it from a working
version. You can PM me if you happen to need more

Ugh, nothing like taking some time
off and coming back to a few thousand messages. Anyhow, FWIW, here's my
take on the situation:

trust HP more than Compaq many
times over. I use them for all my major servers and printers.

HP support, after youblow
through the 'We assume you're an idiot so here are 40 hoops to jump through'
part, is pretty decent generally. Late last year, they goofed and sent me
two CPUs that had different voltages for the same NetServer and that caused
some internal damage. After immediately acknowledging the mistake, they
really stepped to the plate and ended up sending me every internal part to
rebuild the server and a tech to do it. Would they have done it without
my having a full, on-site warranty? Not sure.

I do, however, remember calling tech
support once and telling THEM that a new model of laptop had shipped the month
before then hung up, since if I knew that much more, they couldn't tell me how
to fix it...

Bottom line/Summary: Most support
can use some major bolstering, but until they're willing to pay a bit more for
the frontline staff and internal communication, you're going to get some major
headaches from talking to people whose primary job qualification was having a
pulse

Thus concludes my tale and cynicism
for the day

If you want an extremely nice card, which we use in our development

They work great, and are used by newsrooms in a lot of places for their
video editing, stills, etc.
It's a much higher quality than ATI, and has better drivers.

Can anyone suggest a good video capture card for a Windows 2000 Pro machine,
where the normal everyday user is NOT an admin? It doesn't need to capture
video, just good quality stills off of a video signal.

Our Materials Lab is purchasing a video camera for their stereoscope

able to capture high quality stills.

Correct. You just have to forward PPTP traffic to an internal RRAS
server.
Checkpoint has documents on how to do it on their site. If you
don't have support with them though, it's a pain to get the documents. If
you do, just do a search for static NAT and PPTP.

This is kind of a personal issue, but maybe someone could help me out as it
relates to legalaties for email. My x-wife typed stuff up in word to look
like an email and put threats and various obscenties in it. There is no
header info just says subject,to,from and the offending text it could simply
be typed in word (and was btw!:) ).

Anyhow, I went online to mail.com, yahoo.com, hotmail.com, outlook, outlook
express, and aol.com and printed up an email from each to show that this
isnt what an email looks like. I also printed the header info from both
outlook and outlook express to show server transactions. My lawyer is
bringing in 'an email expert' to certify the email doesnt show anything. Any
ideas.. would be grateful

Although this is pertaining to my personal problem, it may be interesting to
know what the law is viewing as a valid email vs. fraudlent email. I read up
on some cases online but most dealt with spammers and not holding an email
for an assault or contract negotation.

Thx to any who have some ideas!

I
don't think there will be duplicate positions. I expect them to continue
to function as 2 seperate companies. Compaq's name is much bigger than HP,

bring it into Excel and massage the info easily. Not commercially

(It's valuable for when the boss says, Who has access to X share or Who's

Welcome to IT. I've always done it, been on salary, and that's how it is.
One way around it I've found is to take extra time off. I've never had an
employer upset because I worked 3 days on a server problem and wanted to
take the next day to work from home.
Best Advice: Don't complain about it too much. That's a good way to lose

I was wondering if anyone has any policies set up for Over Time.

The reason I ask is one of the other network guys and myself have put in
about 40 hours over time this month and we receive nothing for it.

Just wondering what policies are set up at other companies to compensate for
over time.

We consistently work about 8-12 hours over a month and we get no time off or
anything for this.

Management keeps telling us it is just part of our job and we can not get
any comp time even though we are only scheduled for

40 hours a week.

Hey folks,

2-3 times a week, I'll get a message
on my Citrix Server that it's out of virtual memory. I can't narrow down any
applications that may be causing a memory leak. There are a couple of DOS programs
on the server which are checked to run in their own memory space. This is a
Compaq Proliant ML530, Dual 866 PIII Xeon proc., 896MB RAM, (2) 9.1Gb disks.
The page file is about twice the size of my physical RAM. This server run
NT4 TSE, sp5 and Citrix Metaframe 1.8, sp2. Does anyone have any ideas as
to what I might check out next? I'm in the process of running Performance
Monitor right now, but wanted to check andsee if there's any other areas
I should be investigating.

I'm also experiencing infrequent
blue screens with the same stop message, but I think I've narrowed this down to
a printer driver conflict with one of the HP DeskJets installed.

RE: Ghost and 2000

2001-08-23 Thread David James

They are all Dell's, pretty much Optiplex and Dimensions. The motherboard
will be different. I currently don't have a 2k AD setup, NT still controls
my domain. I'm reading up on sysprep, and it appears that Sysprep will work
with an NT controlled domain since it's mainly looking for share names for
the packages. I don't know, I'm not through the whole article yet. From
what I understand, the RIS features of a 2K AD environment replace the need
for sysprep, correct? Anyhow, we own a copy of Norton Ghost 2001, and I'd
like to use it since I've used it in the past. However, I'd like to do this
the best way possible, and in a way that will work later on. I don't have
an available box to test the image on right now, so that's why I'm asking.
I guess I could just try it here in the near future. I'll be moving to AD
soon, but for now I'm dealing with 2k clients and NT servers.

Did you check the Hardware Compatibility List for both of the floppies you
tried to use? Do those floppies work in other machines running W2K? If you
can boot from it, then all your cables are connected, your BIOS is cool with
it, so I would just make sure that the devices work under W2K. After that,
maybe there is an issue on the Motherboard itself that W2K isn't happy with.

Nothing shows up in the system log, when I try to start sfloppy, I get :
Error 0020 The system cannot find the device specified. I guess I'll try a
BIOS update next. I just don't get it. I can boot to DOS, start setup, do
whatever I want. It's like the BIOS isn't talking to the OS.

Anything showing up in System log?

If not got to Start/settings/controlpanel/DEVICES. Scroll down and select
SFLOPPY. Then click on STARTUP button on right. Is SFLOPPY set to SYSTEM
startup type?

1) No, the same CD that I've always used

2) Not from image from CD

3) Yes, I'm logged in as administrator

I went ahead and installed W2K Pro, and the floppy shows up there...That
means the board is fine. What the hell do I do now!!!

Every music lover is familiar with the sound of the flute, which seems to
possess a magic power that emanates from its innermost being. It speaks, it
moves, it entrances, almost as if it had been revealed to us on the glorious
day of creation. And yet it is genuine human expression, an element of
language, the image of a dream continually repeated. -Meylan

More questions:

Did you use any customized NT install CD?

Did you install NT4 from an image(Ghost or Network based)?

Are you logging on with Administrator account?

Honestly, I haven't looked at the HCL, but I know for a fact that one of the
floppies worked fine in a previous NT box that I had. This is going onto an
NT4 box, not W2K. I figure it's got to be the motherboard.

You need the SID util from MS.
I've been dealing with that today as well.

Hyena will work also.

RE: Dual booting NT with Windows 98 on a FAT32 partition

2001-08-15 Thread David James

Run partition magic, resize the drive. Install NT on the new partition.
You can get a patch from MS that allows NT to see FAT32 drives, or at least
there is a utility I have I got from somewhere that allows it to happen.
The best option is to just install W2k. You can dual boot it if you like,
or just upgrade.

Subject: Dual booting NT with Windows 98 on a FAT32 partition

Hi all,

I have a laptop with a large drive (30GB) that has Windows 98 on a FAT32
partition of about 10GB and the other 20GB has Ghost images for backups and
some testing scenarios. I would love to be able to repartition this
machine so I can add NT to this machine but I'm not sure of the best way to
do this without losing the 98 setup. PartitionMagic 4.0 was initially used
to setup the drives on this machine so that is available to me.

Has anyone done this or seen any good documentation on how to accomplish
this without losing my 98 configuration?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin Bachelder

Thanks Jay! I wonder how many people remember the exact ip address of
there routers off the top of there head. Actually, I do know my IP
address for my home DSL connection. But this situation was for a client
of my company that another engineer handles and I didn't have a record
of it anywhere.

Thanks for all the help, guys.

In my case all of the boxes in my location all hit the net with the same
IP address. Obviously I don't keep that address on the top of my head
as it has nothing to do with my local boxes address. Just an example.
