First alert, Maybe nothing.

We just had our developer machines, running NT2000 Server hit with
Nimda.

The strange thing is, we have Nimda protection in our email scanner, and
all the security fixes MS said should be applied. SP2 is installed.

The machines boot up, a log in screen displays, and they login. The
Novell login script begins to run as normal ( we run mixed network, NT
and Novell), then the login script box clears as normal, a blue screen
appears as normal, and nothing further happens.

Could this be a new strain?

Don't know much about ME other than it's a stripped out version of W2K.
Can you look at the logs or do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and look at what's running
when it slows.

My focus is small shops - I realize money is very tight; however, you
need to get rid of ME from the standpoint of your company trying to do
anything network related down the road ME will not support.

Good luck.

I have been a member of this list for about a month. We are a small
company and I don't have the benefit of a large IT dept so I thought I'd
throw this question to you guys. My personal PC is a Windows ME PC.
Today it started doing something really weird. About every two hours it
just kind of stops. I mean, it still works and all ( although there is
no more Internet access) but it is very, very slow. Can't hardly move
the mouse and I have to shutdown too get it back. It's weird because it
goes south almost like clock work every 1.5 to 2 hours. I don't have a
virus, I am fairly certain of that. It actually happens all of a sudden,
yea, I sat here and waited for it to happen. It doesn't seem to be a
gradual thing, I mean, it doesn't get progressively slow, it happens all
at once all of a sudden. It is a royal PITA.

Any ideas? :

1. Present a splash screen that everyone will see for 5

2. Change everyone's desktop wallpaper to some uniform graphic.

I am looking for suggestions and would appreciate any help. I have

moves adds and changes are a snap,
no wiring back to the pbx for voice,
everyone keeps their phone,
You can do calls from your pc (with the correct h/w and s/w) some users
can even move themselves.
If you're doing new facilities installation, one set of wires for each
user.

Can save a mint on international long distance.
phone roaming from site to site.
sometimes installing will save you money, and you get data connectivity
free. once the infrastructure for VOIP is in, video is easy(er).

with Domestic long distance prices going down, has made VOIP not as cost
effective, and longer payback, especially considering you need support,
etc.

may require rewiring cat 5, switches, infrastructure, etc.

I have heard of large companies setting up a standard config, gateway
server, and rolling it out across the country. of course this may have
been a dream of the marketing groups at Cisco Networkers.

We've done 2 analysis, and havn't found a place where it's cost
effective. When I build a building, it'll have VOIP from the start.

it makes sense, if you have the resources to support it.

I'm not sure, but the URL could be www.cisco.com/avvid

The news said that there were 5 planes hijacked. 4 are accounted for (2 in

San Francisco)). They don't know where the 5th is. No news about any of
those planes being shot down by the military.

The news just reported that the Palestinians are celebrating in the streets
shouting God is Great. I sincerely doubt that God is celebrating.

So
more carnage is needed for us to have some kind of closure, even if it is

  Those that
advocate waiting for a full and complete accounting to determine blame are
  WRONG. We should retaliateNOW
against ANY terrorist group that haveEVER in the past taken ANY type of action

I'm watching MSNBC and the live shots still show a lot of smoke coming up
from the area. Looks like a very large fire there now. Can any of you
NYC people see it? There were also shots of the Brooklyn bridge (I
think - never been there) full of people walking out of the city. One of
my buddies in NJ said he could see an aircraft carrier in the river and jet
fighters flying over his house.

Slashdot reports that one of the founders of Akamai may have been on one of
the planes that hit the wtc.

Where to call

Numbers for information regarding the attacks

Anyone with information about Tuesday’s terrorist attacks are being asked to
contact the FBI at 1-866-483-5137 or via its Web site,

Relatives of American Airlines passengers seeking information about
relatives may call 1-800-245-0999.

United Airlines said friends or family members seeking information on
flights may call 1-800-932-8555. United also said it would post any
information it has on its Web site, www.united.com

Morgan Stanley, the largest tenant in the World Trade Center, established an
emergency contact phone number for employees and their families:
1-888-883-4391.

The Office of Victims of Crime has established a hotline at 1-800-331-0075
to leave contact information to get more details about victims and
survivors.

Blood and platelet donors will be needed over the next several days to help
replenish the nation’s supply. Call the Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or
America’s Blood Centers at 1-888-BLOOD-88 to schedule an appointment.

Subject: A few thoughts on today's events

First:

Thanks to those outside of the US who have expressed concern and support. It
is much appreciated. I don't live anywhere near NYC, but as a US citizen and
a simple human being I am distraught by these events, and wish the best for
those who've been affected.

As usual, people across America have mostly responded by trying to comfort
and care for those who have been directly affected by the attack. It's not
for nothing that citizens of the US are known as the most generous in the
world, and the most practical.

Erik Goldoff's forwarded post from his IT director is spot on, and also much
appreciated.

Second:

It does not matter, in some senses, who did this. What matters is why it
happened. While steps do need to be taken to detect and punish the
perpetrators, this problem will not fade simply because the US will have
(probably) killed whoever did this. In many places across the world, the US
is hated, and with reason. The US government has since World War II been
instrumental in destabilizing many democratically elected regimes, and has
sided with tyrants and dictators, so long as they supported US foreign
policy, or were willing to be puppets. The main target for many years was
Communism, although after the Berlin wall fell the focus changed, and has
continued to change, to whatever enemy of the day is fixated upon.

Cuba, Iraq, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden, PFLP,
DFLP, etc., etc., etc. are all targets now, but whether now or in the past,
the US government has pursued its ends with means that are not in keeping
with the stated values that most Americans cherish and profess to believe.

American foreign policy has tried to direct events and attitudes across the
world, but it has often not had a coherent aim, usually trying simply to
keep a lid on various situations, or trying to reward those who have toed
our line. Its overseas agenda has been chaotic, perverse and inexplicable.
We will suffer more for it.

The easiest example is right now the most relevant - Israel and the
Palestinians.

I won't try to say who is right or wrong in that conflict, but suffice it to
say there is blame enough for both sides, and the US government has been
neck-deep in it. Worse, the US government has sent conflicting signals since
the beginning.

It's overly simplistic to say that we are hated because we have tried to be
the world's policeman. If we were only that, we would have far fewer
problems. The problem is that we are the corrupt cop on the world beat;
sometimes meddling where we shouldn't, sometimes turning a blind eye where
we shouldn't, often picking on the wrong party in a conflict, and in general
being ham-handed and incompetent in the patrolling of our self-appointed
rounds and the execution of our self-appointed duties.

I'll make one last point here, which has been stated elsewhere - I don't
believe that you can find a large terrorist attack anywhere that wasn't
sparked by some long-standing pattern of government interference where it
wasn't wanted and wasn't justified. If the US government hadn't elected
itself the world's policeman, this wouldn't have happened. Still on point,
if the US government hadn't been such a corrupt cop, this probably wouldn't
have happened, although it possibly might still have. That's harder to
discern. Whether or not we should be the world's policeman is a separate
matter, but if we must be, we should be a good cop, not a bad cop.

Third:

The fallout from this outside of realm of the immediate (i.e., our
military/political response to the actual attack) is going to take a long
time to see. Economically speaking, the WTC housed some really influential
firms, and major offices for many more. People are worrying about gas
prices, among other things. You should be

Do you guys (and gals) know of a good, clean to purge memory other than
rebooting ? I have a stubborn Win2k Svr, 128 megs that spikes in memory
usage and I have found that rebooting is my only recourse .

Thanks in advance,
Dave

I would imagine that pretty much any W2K server is gonna gobble up
128MB without thinking twice about it. I'm not sure what the big

David,

Plain and simple. Look at the task manager, sort the columns by memory
usage, and write down the process that's using the most memory.

ram for Win2k Server which has been said a number of times already :oþ

It depends on the importance of the server? Is it a brand name or clone box?
I think you mentioned you were just waiting this out until you can get a
more robust machine. If that's the case, get some generic ram and bump it up
to 512mb. It'll be insignificant cost wise and give you the performance
you're looking for in the meantime. After you get the new server, you'll
have a good candidate for a test server :o)

I have a white box at home that is my DC. A 233 P2 with 64mb and I don't
even worry about the memory usage. It's way under powered but does the job.
All it does is authenticate and act as a file server. I also have a PE 6300
quad xeon 2GB RAM that I have the most fun with. If you don't ask it to do a
lot, almost anything will do.

David,

Plain and simple. Look at the task manager, sort the columns by memory
usage, and write down the process that's using the most memory.

FYI - Mine has 256 and uses 175, so step it up to 512. IMHO, it doesn't
matter what you have for total amount, Windows is going to use as much of it
as possible.

It sounds like the memory allocation is pretty much even for the operating
system. Nothing is using an abundant amount. I'd say it's just the minimal
ram for Win2k Server which has been said a number of times already :oþ

This is kind of a personal issue, but maybe someone could help me out as it
relates to legalaties for email. My x-wife typed stuff up in word to look
like an email and put threats and various obscenties in it. There is no
header info just says subject,to,from and the offending text it could simply
be typed in word (and was btw!:) ).

Anyhow, I went online to mail.com, yahoo.com, hotmail.com, outlook, outlook
express, and aol.com and printed up an email from each to show that this
isnt what an email looks like. I also printed the header info from both
outlook and outlook express to show server transactions. My lawyer is
bringing in 'an email expert' to certify the email doesnt show anything. Any
ideas.. would be grateful

Although this is pertaining to my personal problem, it may be interesting to
know what the law is viewing as a valid email vs. fraudlent email. I read up
on some cases online but most dealt with spammers and not holding an email
for an assault or contract negotation.

Thx to any who have some ideas!

The Cisco VPN client requires a Cisco VPN Concentrator (i.e. 3005, 3015,
3030, etc.) at the location you are connecting to (your home). The cost
for
the Concentrator is $3000 plus depending on model. The client then allows
you to setup a tunnel with encryption to the Concentrator.

This works great connecting a number of home PCs to the office. However,
it's a bit expensive to connect to your home PC. I would forget the Cisco
client and look into some of the other options that have been suggested.

The reason I ask is one of the other network guys and myself have put in
about 40 hours over time this month and we receive nothing for it.

Just wondering what policies are set up at other companies to compensate for
over time.

We consistently work about 8-12 hours over a month and we get no time off or
anything for this.

Management keeps telling us it is just part of our job and we can not get
any comp time even though we are only scheduled for

40 hours a week.

I know a lot of you personally so I am being lazy and emailing NTSYSADMIN
instead of finding all of my friends emails from here heh. So excuse the
 spam...

Anyways next week on the 29th I am going to be testifying before a
congressional committee that is meeting to discuss security issues, namely
worms and virus's. Its going to be at the court house in San Jose so if
your
interested in coming down and watching its open to the public and it
should
be quite entertaining. I will be the one with green hair sitting next to
the
governor of California, possibly the head of the NSA, the director of
NIPC,
CERT, Microsoft, etc... so hopefully there will be some interesting
 conversations taking place.

Anyways its at about 10am on the 29th of this month so if your interested
in
coming on down to check it out then send me an email directly and I'll
give
you the information on where to go and what time and all that.

If you get
Stu's W2K news email newsletter he just sent one out this morning that had a
snippet from Mark Minasi explaining how to do this very thing. Here's
the quote from Mark Minasi:
How to let
Non-Domain Admins connect to a Win2K Server via Terminal Services in Remote
Admin mode? Here's what Mark Minasi found out: I really like
Terminal Services for Windows 2000 in the "Remote Administration" mode; it
lets up to two people use Terminal Services to remotely control a Windows
2000 Server, and doesn't require me to buy any Terminal Server client
licenses. But when you select "Remote Administration" mode for Terminal
Services, then Terminal Services only lets members of the Domain Admins
group log into Terminal Services. I wanted to let regular old users
log in, but didn't know how. While teaching a class for a large
communications company this month, I found out how. Open Terminal
Services Configuration (it's in Administrative Tools) In the command
pane (the left-hand pane of the MMC console), click on "Connections." In
the right-hand pane, you'll see an icon representing a connection (a hard
disk atop a network connection) and the words "RDP-Tcp," "tcp," and
"Microsoft RDP 5.0." Double-click the icon to bring up its Properties
dialog, or just right-click the icon and choose "Properties." You'll see a
property page labeled "RDP-Tcp Properties." Click the "Permissions" tab.
Note that right now, the tab shows only the System account and the local
Administrators group. Add any person or group that you like, and they'll be
able to log onto the server via Terminal Services.

Has anyone successfully set up Outlook Web Access in a W2K Windows Load

additional authentication? We're having trouble with the ACE agent talking
over the correct IP address.
