RE: DHCP bad_address issue

2009-02-26 Thread Edwards, David
I have seen this issue when a system is connected to an external test
board (engineering shop). The system the board is connected to hands out
or picks up an address for the board. We also see this on our PBX
management console PC. It seems to try to pick up addresses for the PBX
ports for some reason. We just delete the Bad address entries.

Got an odd DHCP issue. We have a DHCP scope that is used just for
automated server builds. Getting a bunch of BAD_ADDRESS conflicts in the
DHCP console. The Unique ID field shows an 8 digit string not the 12 of
a MAC address. I can not ping any of the IP addresses that are
supposedly in use, that DHCP thinks are bad. I've found a few posts that
talk about this being Wireless Access Points or possibly a OS X client
that is configured incorrectly. Of course our network guys insist it's
none of those things and it must be a Windows server. I don't see any
reference in the Event Logs or the DHCP logs that indicate what these
machines are? This post is similar to what we are seeing:

I tested their Puredisk product in house and was unable to get it to backup a

Java applets via a Proxy

2008-09-15 Thread Edwards, David
We have occasionally had an issue where a user will try to run a java
web application such as GoToMeeting and the application will not run
even though the user already has the client installed locally. By not
run I mean the user cannot connect to an existing meeting or start a new
one. We have seen this with other web meeting applications as well and
some other java web applications.

We currently use a .pac file to point to one of three geographically
placed proxy servers. Based on the IP address of the client, it will use
the closest proxy server. All of which are configured identically.

We have found that if we let the browser use the .pac file the java
applet will not always run, yet when we point the browser directly to
the proxy server, via FQDN/IP:port, we have no issues running the java
app. Once this has been done, we change the browser back to using the
.pac file (Auto detect), close the browser and reopen it, and the java
application seems to work correctly from that point on. At least we have
not had a case of a user complaining that the app stops working
afterwards.

We use GP to force the proxy settings to "Automatically detect" and have
all the appropriate DHCP/DNS settings in place to allow the browser, IE
6 or 7, to find the .pac/wpad.dat file and resolve the proxy and access
the Internet. No issues with normal web browsing at all. Only when
using the .pac file to run a java based web application and not every
user is affected.

We do have exclusions in the .pac file to bypass for local subnets and
to use the proxy for certain systems in our DMZ. This also works
correctly.

Has anyone seen this behavior before?

RE: How to logon to 2 domains question

2008-06-13 Thread Edwards, David
If the link goes down, each system will have cached the login ID and
access rights(SID). This will allow you to login to the system. You can
verify this by disconnecting from the WAN. Your SID at that time of WAN
interruption still has your access rights for any local resources in the
local trusted domain. Anything that happens on the Corp domain while the
WAN is down will not take effect until the connection is restored and
changes are replicated.

This is how laptop users are able to login while not connected to the
network and then make a VPN connection.

Where is the content coming from? Local drives or back end servers? We
have a frontend server hosting the web site on mirrored disks with
redundant backend servers serving up the content. Traffic on the site is

Any recommendation for a program that would take a file server share and
according to some parameters you place would age the data in it and move
to another spot, While keeping NTFS perms and Shares? something kind of
like Securecopy, but not as expensive. Maybe something that might leave
some sort of Symlink to the actual file? So I could target all data that

Our policy is that if the user wants a non standard system, he is on his

that approach, they don't want us spinning our wheels and the user
loosing productivity by not using a company standard system. Yeah, it
took some convincing at first but when an Exec. VP wasted a day trying

In my opinion, letting users view hidden files is an invitation delete
what they want. Not good. Better make sure they have only User rights
and nothing more powerful. I would find out what they are hiding and
then block those file types using the 2003/8 File Server Resource
Manager. That way they can't write the files at all. Also you can have
an alert sent to their manager and whom ever else you want, including
them, to let them know that your on to their antics. I love f__king with

Well that's my thinking now.. originally we had a 2k licensing server
and had enterprise agreement cals. We upgraded the licensing server
(rebuilt-new box) to win2k3. This article
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837211/) seems to suggest that there
is an issue there however it's a pre sp1 hotfix and we are at sp2.

>From the way that I figure if anyone with an existing license is fine
but new connections would get a win2k3 temp license and not a 2k
license. So what we would need to do it install 2k3 cals as part of our
ent agreement. Trying to find some lit to support this theory though.

"your temp license will expire in 4 days".

As far as I can gather this is correct as from my understating the first
connection gets a grace period cal for 90 days. This would seem right
cos his temp license has 4 days until the expiration and has been valid
form 3 months ago (minus 4 days).

The things that's getting me is that we have 34 temp licenses been
issued and none of Windows 2000 Server - TS Per Device CAL of which we
have 100 provided by our ent agreement Volume license are in use or
being issued.

The following article (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822134) is
interesting but im yet to make much sense of it or confirm what is
happening. Very interestingly if I go into TS configuration\Server
Settings \ Licensing mode it is set for Remote Desktop fro
Administration which to me doesn't seem right, I would have thought it
should say either per device or per user.

One more thing I would through into the mix is that our previous license
server was win2k, however this is a new box.

Lastly if I start an app via nfuse/citrix and then go and check the
licensing server there seems to be no license issued to me.

I'm not much on TS and Citrix yet so any pointers would be appreciated.

it seems that there is a client license (CAL) for everything. There is a
CAL for Server that would need to be purchased for every user/device you

I guess I have two questions. Firstly, are there any logs somewhere I

a cert to be used from a valid cert authority or should I be able to
just install the self cert on each of the client machines for it to work
?

What happens if you provide the user with a temporary different account
and have them log in? I would start with default user group membership
first and then add the same group memberships as the other account.

When you disabled the quotas, did you remap the drives/restart the
client PC? Also, as someone else posted, what happens if you try to copy
a larger file to that share? With quotas enabled and then
disabled/remapped? Quota info stays in place when quotas are disabled.
The quota just isn't enforced.

What does the quota properties show for this user?
There's also some good quota troubleshooting info at:

Fascinating question David,

The same exact results do come when the user logs onto other computers.
That was covered in the original email I posted below. The ISO image as
a drive was an interesting question...unfortunately the user has no such
devices connected. Thanks. - Jeff

You could use an APC PDU that has Ethernet built in. We have one that
has 8 outlets, each outlet can be turned off or on remotely via a web
interface. http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=70

in a remote location. So I only need one outlet and I have network and

experience with these boxes and I wanted to see if anyone has one in
place and or any recommendations.

Thanks.

RE: Commvault resumability question

2008-03-17 Thread Edwards, David
They wouldn't let you do an onsite demo? My Austin area rep had no
problem with it. I am nearing the end of my POC with them and some other
vendors. They have been very helpful in proving that their software will
do what they say it will. You should push them on that one. But to
answer you question, it will pause and resume a job on request or on the
fly if a restore is started and there are no drives available to do the
restore. Restores have priority over backups so the backup is paused,
tape ejected, restore tape inserted and read, then the backup tape is
reinserted and the backup job continues from where it left off. Very
cool.

Dave

Subject: Commvault resumability question

I just attended a Commvault demo yesterday at their Oceanport HQ
yesterday and had a chance to go over a lot of their features. So far
I'm very happy with what I've seen. Not having an in house demo install

(something they are very reluctant to give us) is a sticking point so I
need to reach out to others for practical feedback.

They talk about their ability to resume backups based on checkpoints of
data blocks already processed to tape (or another location). This is
something that would really matter to me. For one thing I wouldn't need

to purchase a spare tape drive that sits idle waiting for restore
operations like I currently have and would have to buy in my new
library. Since restores are a higher priority the backup or duplication

job would pause, the tape being written to would eject, the restore tape

would load and run and then the previous operation would start where it
left off.

I questioned Commvault heavily about this feature and they swear it
works as advertised. I've since had an external source say that it kind

of works but not nearly as well as Commvault claims. Who has experience

with this feature and what are your thoughts on it?

RE: My most ignorant question to date.

2008-03-13 Thread Edwards, David
So what I picture in my mind of your configuration is simply two RAID
arrays on one channel. Each drive having a different SCSI ID yet grouped
together into two separate arrays. I assume you are not also mirroring
the two arrays (RAID 10) and they contain different data.

In my experience with Compaq RAID controllers, you should be able to add
the second controller connect the desired array and during post of the
controller, read the RAID configuration from the disk to the controller
memory to speed up the RAID array move to the new controller. Of course
you want a good backup anyway but the older Compaq RAID controllers had
that ability. Even some of the Dell Perc controllers can do this as
well.

I know it is hard to believe but here goes.

I have a RAID array attached to a RAID array attached to a Smart Array
controller.

This works but I believe I have an idea to make things faster by backing
up RAID array 1 then

adding a second Smart Array controller. Moving RAID array 1 to Smart
Array controller 2.

Then restore data to new Logical drive on new Smart Array controller.

This should be RAID array 1 a lot faster, yes?

RE: Proxy server configurations

Thanks, Ken and Ben. I will review the links. I actually do have wpad
setup in DNS and I believe I have the redirect configured also. I guess
I need to understand how the browser should be configured. Currently we
have GP push to check "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic
configuration script" which points to our pac file. I will review these
links and see if I can get it working the way I want.

Hi,

In addition to Ben's comments:

a) you can just rename your .pac file to .wpad without need to configure
any redirects in IIS (at least for IE clients)

b) you can either use the DNS option outlined by Ben, or use the DHCP
option (which gives you a bit more flexibility as you can have
arbitrarily named hosts etc)

c) everything else is explained here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wpad
and

You need to implement WPAD (Web Proxy Auto Detection). Since you
already have your PAC script, you're most of the way there. WPAD is
basically just a standard that says, "Look for a proxy config script
called http://wpad/wpad.dat and use it if you find it." Then set your
roaming users to do proxy auto-detection, and problem solved.

So, create a DNS alias (CNAME) called "wpad" in whatever DNS zone
your LAN hands out as the default parent domain name. For example, if
your LAN uses "corp.example.com", you would want
"wpad.corp.example.com". Make the target of the CNAME whatever the
name of the web server holding your PAC script is.

Then, on the web server, create a redirection/alias/whatever named
"/wpad.dat" that points to your PAC script. For example, on my
network, "http://wpad/wpad.dat"; ends up redirecting to
"http://foogate/proxy.pac";.

If you're using IIS, I believe what you do is create a "Virtual
Directory" object called "wpad.dat", and set the "content" to be a
"Redirection URL", but I don't use IIS much and I'm not near a Win
server right now.

Which Apache, you just add "Redirect /wpad.dat
http://whereever/proxy.pac"; to your config file.

  HTH,

-- Ben

There are a number of solutions out there that did so pretty quickly
(and remotely). One particular that I saw was at an EMC meeting a few
weeks ago. It uses data deduplication so every backup after the first
one takes a few minutes; pretty independent of the bandwidth technology
used.

I don't backup desktops or laptops. Our users have been told many times
(and it's been reinforced by crashes) to not keep any data locale to
their machines. In the world of road warriors where they are connecting
remotely for various reasons, there's little reason to not keep the most
recent copy of their work on a user/group/etc share; one that is backed
up regularly.

I currently have the Domain Controller role, the DNS role, and will

Would you add the File Server role and Printer Server roles, or just
configure the file sharing and printer sharing manually?

When we moved our data center a few years ago, we left the servers
intact and moved them. After making Full backups of each system, we had
a "Data Center Specialist" moving company come in and pack the servers
and move them to the new site. They unload them and placed them in the
computer room. We then racked them and began powering them on. We lost 2
hard drives out of 200 servers. All RAID 5 arrays. We had spare drives
handy. We had previously installed new main routers and switches along
with all CAT 6 cabling. We were up and running in 36 hours.

Good luck,

I've asked this question here before and no one was able to come up
when an answer. I just happen to come across a work around for this
and though I would share.

You can asign a metric number to each NIC. The card with the lowest
metric is the one that windows will use when more than one NIC is
active.

Network Connections --> NIC --> TCPIP --> Advanced --> Interface Metric.

Enjoy
