best windows fax app?

2010-05-11 Thread Greg Farber
Hello. Sort of a low-tech question here...

We have a need to deliver pdf documents to some of our customers' fax
machines.

We are testing Windows Fax on a Dell Optiplex with an OEM fax board:

Broadcom BCMv.92 56k modem

the drivers have been updated recently.

The problem is that when we fax a pdf of an invoice, only the company logo
(a graphic) gets faxed through, and not the text content. So we get a big
white page with only the graphic showing.

I am thinking that there might be a better fax app out there..? Any
suggestions?

Thank you !

robocopy script - deleting aged folders

2010-01-28 Thread Greg Farber
I have a ROBOCOPY batch file question please:

C:\Parcams is a directory that accumulates dated security camera snapshots.
The snapshots for each day are stored in a sub-directory, named after that
date,
i.e., C:\Parcams\parcams-12-30-2009

I have prepared a script for purging files and folders that are greater than
n days old.
However, I have not quite got the script right. It successfully deletes the
files
inside the dated directories, but it leaves the empty directories behind.

pic: http://screencast.com/t/OWFlYmEy

Here is the text of the script:

mkdir c:\dump
robocopy C:\PARCAMS C:\dump /E /MOV /MINAGE:60 /R:10
rmdir C:\dump /s /q

Here is a screenshot of the results of the batch file:

Any suggested tweaks? I'd like to have the script remove those empty
directories too.

Thanks! ~Greg

server 2003 - different domain computer using existing name?

2009-03-09 Thread Greg Farber
Hi. I have a computer on my windows server 2003 domain called AAA. It runs
XP pro, in a PC that we got from our equipment vendor (it is a specialized
faxing/emailing computer). We had an issue with AAA and had to get a
replacement from the vendor. I named the replacement machine BBB and joined
the domain.
There is a problem: It seems that a proprietary application is running on
another computer, which is compiled to look for the machine called AAA. (it
cannot look for numeric addresses)

Question: I thought it was bad to recycle the same computer name to a
different computer when joining a domain, but that seems to be what this
situation requires. Is this true? or is there a good way I should go about
renaming BBB to AAA?

Thanks for any insight.

Greg

2009-03-09 Thread Greg Farber
Thank you Brian, Jim and Ben.
Thanks to you, we were able to solve our problem. By...

Breaking BBB off from the domain into workgroup
then changing the name of BBB to AAA
then deleting the old instance of AAA from the domain's Active Directory
and then reattaching AAA back to the domain
did the trick.

Best regards,
