Re: VMware Training

My original question about quality of eLearning material got lost in the
discussion of VCP requisites. Permit me to repost it:
*
Would like to know experience of others who may have taken All-Access eLearning

How do they compare with TrainSignal's VMware courses? Thanks.

Win 2008 Restore glitch with Windowsimagebackup

2012-03-22 Thread Jay Kulsh
This Win 2008 server totally crashed and I have Windowsimagebackup of all
critical volumes on a remote server.

Did not have large enough portable USB disk to copy that backup and connect to
crashed server, and could not view network while using Restore option with OS
DVD.

So, did a quick install of OS and after network could be seen, used remote
location to restore the backup image. However, since C: drive was in use, the
restored image could only be put on D: drive. Made D: partition active and C:
inactive, and now none are working.

My question: If I do the temp OS install on D: drive and then do a restore to
C: drive from that network location, will I be able to get back the old server
if I make C: active and D: inactive? Thanks.

That would work only if you have an extra local disk with enough space to

Terry,

Thanks for the WBadmin command line entry.

About "The biggest problem is that everytime you run it, you overwrite the old
backup so you only have the latest backup." -- this is so only because your
target is a remote share. A local drive can keep versions.

I think your -AllCritical switch backs up all VMs. There is no option to select

I think you are backing up your VMs from the host machine which is Windows 2008

Microsoft VM - 5 ways of backing up?

2012-02-01 Thread Jay Kulsh
After reading numerous articles, it seems to me that there may be 5 ways of
backing up a Microsoft VM:

1. Doing an on-line backup using a VSS-aware software like Microsoft's SCVMM or
Altaro, etc.

2. Doing an on-line backup from the host machine, of all VMs, of all critical
disks, using built-in WBadmin. (Many conditions must be met for this to work,
but they are doable in most cases.)

3. Saving the VM (not quite stopping it, but neither is VM on-line; perhaps we
can think that VM is in sleep mode.)

4. Exporting a VM after stopping it.

5. Copying VHD file (along with XML & BIN files?) after stopping it.

Where am I wrong here? May be some of these methods should not be characterized
as backups. Of the valid methods, which is most reliable and which is most easy
to accomplish? Thanks.

Robocopy's /MOVE switch not working

Andrew,

Robcopy is not the culprit. Xcopy is. Even after we could not access C: or D:

Xcopy has modified default permissions of drives. We cannot view any log or

I think running SECEDIT is perhaps the way to go and hope that we can open

Hi Andrew,

Both C: and D: drives are obviously there since we can logon to the server, but

Re: Windows MMC - "The parameter is incorrect" error

2012-01-14 Thread Jay Kulsh
Ben,

1. I have stated my robocopy and xcopy commands in another reply.

2. Yes, I know robocopy is so much better. I used Xcopy after a long time and
followed MS KB 323007 for switches so NTFS permissions of various folders could
be copied.
(Robocopy did not give option to select a subset of folders by name; I was
hoping Xcopy would allow folder-name-selection by wild cards.)

3. Yes, I was running from an elevated command prompt (UAC).

4. Error message on running Xcopy - "Access denied" to destination directory.

5. I try to view drives from Windows Explorer. (I wish I could attach a
screen-shot!) For C: and D: drives, now there are only names without the
horizontal bars showing full size & free size. I can see first tab of property
pages where both drive show size of 0 MB. For mapped drive, the proper bar is
there. Of course I cannot open disk mgmt as any MMC is inaccessible.

6. You guess seems correct that drive permissions got copied from
another computer to the local computer. How do I reset them. Thanks.

Thanks.

IPv6 DNS queries not understood by Name Servers

2011-10-28 Thread Jay Kulsh
When IPv6 capable machines (Mac OS X, Win Vista or Win 7) send DNS query
request for a www A record in IPv6 format, Name Servers at Network Solution
respond with generic entry (*, all others) rather than the correct www entry.

DNS servers of our company are Windows 2003 R2. Either they are sending out or
forwarding the request in the wrong format or Network Solution's NS server
don't understand IPv6 requests, resulting in non-specific, wrong response. (We
have analyzed the packets and no other DNS servers are involved.)

Has anyone encountered this? Who is the real culprit? What may be the solution?

IPv6 requests are sent out even when IPv6 is disabled (unchecked) on Mac OS X
or Windows machines. Thanks to you all.

From managed SAV 10 client to unmanged SEP 11 (going nuts...)

2009-04-07 Thread Jay Kulsh
I have ungraded two W2K3 servers including a DC in this network from managed
SAV 10 client to unmanaged SEP 11 client rather smoothly. But on this member
server, which is running Blackberry Enterprise BTW, upgrade process gets
aborted with the error "The SAVMain feature is must be installed with Symantec
Antivirus. When using the ADDLOCAL property please include SAVMain in the list
of features to install." Searching on Internet on this error produced very
little.

I attempted to uninstall SAV10 from Add/Remove CPL as well as from setup.exe
file of CLT-INST folder-share but get this same error each time. Also, followed
lengthy instructions of Symantec doc ID 2005050210381448 to manually uninstall
SAV10 (there was very little to clean) but it still won't go away from the
programs list in CPL. After and before that, tried to install SEP11 from root
setup.exe file of CD1 as well as from setup.exe in its SEP folder. Have
rebooted this server after each operation -- about 8 times (during late night
hours).

Thankfully only thing good is that I can still install back SAV10 client -- and
Blackberry services are quietly chugging along during all this
uninstall/reinstall mayhem.

Any idea on how to clean this server of SAV 10 client so SEP 11 can be put in
place? Thanks.

Seeing Only one Exchange 2003 when creating mailbox for new user

2009-03-06 Thread Jay Kulsh
in our Exchange 2003 organization, we have 7 admin groups (AGs) corresponding
roughly to # of child domains. When an admin of a domain creates a new user, he
is prompted to create a mailbox and is given option to pick from ANY exchange
server in the entire Win2K3 forest. We want to limit this option to only their
local-to-domain Exchange server.

It seems Microsoft article #883381 talks about this issue but their solution to
deny 6 permissions at AG or Server level is a bit odd since that means you have
to remove inheritance of view-only permissions from the Exch root for all
remote domain admins. Also I remember seeing an Exchange 2K3 setup where this
was accomplished without undoing inheritance of permissions. Please straighten
me out. Thanks.

Tom,

None of these things could work in our situation. Users use different ISP to
connect to Internet so their assigned IPs do not fall in any set range.

Dialup would be very expensive since users are all over the country. VPN is
also not in the picture.

Thanks for input.

Thanks Dan,

We are going to try your suggestion and would let you know if it works. It
might.

BTW, I do not think it matters whether you are using POP3 or IMAP for this

Exchange 5.5 and Windows CE - Tell me I am wrong...

2001-09-20 Thread Jay Kulsh

Hi folks,

I think if you use POP3 client on Windows CE machines (Tripad and Clio etc.)
to connect to Exchange 5.5, you would have to leave SMTP relay open-to-all
on Exchange server, otherwise users can not send out emails. In other words,
this Exchange server is open to abuse by spammers.

This is so because Windows CE does not have a settings for SMTP
authentication on its POP3 client. It does not even have setting to change
SMTP port# from default 25.

Tell me I am wrong... tell me I am ignorant. Better yet, tell me that there
is a workaround for this. If not, tell me I am right and make me sad...

Using secure SMTP (POP3) on Windows CE

2001-09-20 Thread Jay Kulsh

Hi folks,

One of our client uses Tripad and Clio (Windows CE machines). Users use POP3
to connect to Exchange server 5.5 but there is no setting for authentcation
for SMTP (outgoing) mail on those machines and we are forced to leave our
SMTP relay open to all on Exchange server.

Is there work around for this? Currently our Exchange server is being used
for sending SPAM by others from time to time. Thanks.

A new IT administrator

child or grandchild of this second empty domain. According to him, his old

I am unconvinced of the

IIS 5 is very similar to IIS 4, except for SMTP server, which has more

Buy a book for IIS4 and there are plenty of those.

Re: End of My Rope with WINS

2001-08-17 Thread Jay Kulsh

Actually I did mean that.

Here are my notes from previous postings (I have followed them with
excellent results.) -

Make same server primary for all clients! Roger (9/7/00)
Corruption is mainly caused by cross replication.
We do a single master server, with geographically diverse servers doing pull
only replication (replicates from the master to the secondaries, but the
secondaries don't replicate back to the primary server ever). It allows WINS
resolution during WAN outages, and makes corruption near impossible.
*
For more than 5000 clients, you will have to designate different primary
servers, but use hub and spoke methodology. And all users on any given
subnet have the same configuration. - Bob Free.
*
What causes grief is when you split load among a few WINS servers for
clients in the same area. -AsB

According to Roger S and many others, it is not Ok. You should have same
WINS server as primary for all subnets. Secondary server can be local
servers. Primary server would then only push, reducing the chance of any
corruption. (This way WINS configuration approximates DNS configuration.)

Re: NetMon on W2K Pro

2001-08-14 Thread Jay Kulsh

Eric and Tony,

Netmon can be run on NT workstation and even Win95. However this Netmon is
part of SMS server and can be copied on 3 floppies.

And here is the trick for Win2K (Pro or otherwise) machines. Again get the
NetMon from *latest* NT 4 SMS server CD and copy about 6 MB of files. Unlike
in case of Win9x and WinNT, you do not even have to install this program.
Just double-click on netmon.exe file and you are in business. (Of course,
you do need to install network monitor driver.)
