RE: InoculateIT opinions

2001-09-28 Thread Luberti, Carl

We use InocIT across our organization. We have a corporate agreement with
CA to use their products, so we use it by association. Personally, I hate
it, but it's not that bad. It's just (IMHO) not as good as any other
product out there. I know freeware virus scanners that do a better job than
InocIT, especially with Nimda and CodeRed. We had many, many machines
across the enterprise that were infected with both, but InocIT missed 'em
both. Their sig updates are very reactionary, and never proactive. I run
Norton on my Windows PC at home, and it caught both without a sig update
using heuristics. It couldn't clean them, but it quarantined the files
until the update came a few hours later. I couldn't say that about InocIT
without lying. CA even sent us one of their other products on CD with the
funlove virus minted on. Says a lot about their scanner, huh.

My company is looking for a workgroup AV and I was curious what the
opinions were of Inoculate. From past threads, the consensus seems to be
that Norton is better than Mcafee but I don't remember seeing Inoculate
discussed. Any input is appreciated.

RE: Time Sync to outside NTP server in NT4

2001-09-28 Thread Luberti, Carl

You'll need a third party app to sync. I like Dimension4Time (d4time.exe).

I know I can get my NT workstation to sync time with my PDC or other
server when specified through a logon script... How do I get my PDC to
sync with a NTP server outside my network? Using NET TIME only seems to
allow netbios names for the destination computer and not FQDNs.

Any idea?
Thanks

RE: issues with SBS and login scripts

2001-09-28 Thread Luberti, Carl

You might want to go into your PDC and BDC's eventvwr to see if there are
errors. Also, go into server manager on the BDC and force replication.
Watch the eventvwr on your PDC and BDC for errors! If there are none, it
probably isn't a replication problem.

Dear all,

I have recently installed an NT file server BDC on a network with a PDC
running NT SBS. For some reason the users login scripts seem to run
intermittently, but this has only been since I put the new server in?
The only thing I could think of was that it was a replication issue, or
I set it up wrong. Any ideas?

RE: Workstation Naming Standards

2001-09-28 Thread Luberti, Carl

In my organization (10,000+ desktops, 11,000+ laptops), I was able to come
up with a scheme that seems to work well (at least for us, YMMV). Each user
has a 6 character alphanumeric NT logon ID. We use W10101 for group
or shared machines, filling in the first set of X's with location code, and
the second set with usage code; for example, if we have 2 group machines in
our New York office, they would be W1NYSC01GRPC01 and W1NYSC01GRPC02. All
of our user assigned machines use W2XX01 for naming, where the X's are
replaced with their NT logon ID. Since we rebuild machines whenever someone
leaves or is reassigned, etc., it isn't a problem; for example, if my logon
ID is Z1, then my workstation and laptop would be named W2Z101 and
W2Z102. Servers are named by their country, their region, their
location, their OS (NT-WinNT4, 2K-Win2K, UX-Unix, LX-Linux), and then a
number; for example, two NT4 servers in New York would be named USNENYNT01
and USNENYNT02.  We do, however, extend the name for our Exchange servers;
for example, if I had 2 Exchange servers in NY, they'd be named USNENYNTEX01
and USNENYNTEX02. As always, YMMV, but we use this to great benefit in our
organization. We've also pretty much standardized on NT4 or 2K as a server
platform (although that's slowly changing to Linux) and as a desktop
platform, so this becomes even more important. We use Ghost and Ghostwalker
to image NT4 machines and change the name (and SID), and we use Ghost,
Sysprep, and a WinNT.SIF floppy disk to image 2000 machines and change the
name (and SID). Good luck.

hi,

we will be deploying Win2K from scratch on the user's machines (around
700) replacing NT 4. SO I was reviewing our machine naming convention.

Our Offices are located in two cities, one single domain.
So far we would use something like "CityName-Department-User Real Name"
(where city name and department are abbrevations) to name workstations.

Usually the NT Names are the users Company ID, which is unique.

I was wondering how you guys/girls are naming your workstations and users.

regards

Uso

RE: Scheduling NT Server Reboots

2001-09-26 Thread Luberti, Carl

Best bet is to use shutdown.exe (from the resource kit) and the AT command.
To have the machine shut down every weekday at 10:00PM, you would type this
at the command prompt:

AT 10:00PM /every: M,T,W,TH,F c:\Winnt\shutdown.exe /L /R /T:10 /C /Y

This command tells the machine to run shutdown.exe at 10PM every Monday thru
Friday. Shutdown.exe then knows (by the switches) to (/L) shut down the
local machine, and not a remote one, (/R) reboot instead of powering off,
(/T:10) show a warning box for 10 seconds before starting the shutdown
sequence, (/C) force all running apps and services to kill, and (/Y)
answering yes to the "are you sure?" prompt (this switch is unnecessary in
W2K, but is in NT4). You can initiate remote shutdowns by removing the /L
switch after shutdown.exe and replacing it with a \\%computername%
parameter, replacing %computername% with the appropriate server or
workstation host name. As always, YMMV, but this should work no problem.

I have been looking around, hoping to find a way to do automatic reboots to
an NT server. I heard there was a reboot program on the NT Resource Kit,
and after purchasing it found out that the particular program has to be
manually run and activated, but it does reboot any manchine on the network.

How can I force the reboot of a server at say 10:00 pm every weekday night?

RE: ERD Scripts

I've tried it, and the actual Rdisk utility works just fine. I've never had
to use the repair info it creates, however.

Hey - I never saw this. This is almost as good as being listed in the phone
book.

Someone else posted that you can copy the rdisk utility form NT 4 to W2K.
Has anyone tried that?

Now, where's that picture frame ..

Hey Guys,

Steve Clark's (the genius - if I'm ever in the same city as him, I'll
buy him a beer) script for putting computers ERD's onto a different
server has made me wonder if anyone has some idea of how to do this for
Win2K?

What I'm talking about is a script that automatically runs an rdisk
(which you can't do in Win2K) and then copies the result from the REPAIR
directory to a different server...

Any ideas? Hmmm?

Cheers
G.
