Er, that was sort of a joke, but you can do quite a bit with some scripts
monitoring the event logs. I am assuming DCs would be the main thrust of your
interest, so I doubt all servers are DCs, maybe cutting the work down a bit?

SCOM ACS may be a bit OTT :-)

Thanks,

We have maybe 30 or so servers spread over our county school system. It would
be cumbersome to monitor the logs individually.

I do not work at that school on a regular basis. The fiber was broke during a
massive snowstorm Dec 18th, 2009. For whatever reason, the school
administration did not work through my boss to have this fixed. They hired an
outside contractor. Last week my boss asked me have a look at the fiber run.
That is how this landed on my desk.

If it were up to me, I would shoot wireless across the parking lot and be done
with it.

Umm... how are you just now finding out about this, if it was done so long ago?
Did they just now notice that whatever was going across that line isn't
working anymore?

Thanks Jonathan,

This splice was made some time ago, months ago and maybe even a year. The
local school is probably just out the money.

+1 Cisco makes them, but I've never seen one from anywhere else. They are
intended to go from a terminated fiber end to a transceiver of the alternate
type. My understanding is that the fiber has to be offset very specifically for
it to worknot something I would consider very practical in the fieldit
may not even be possible outside of a lab/manufacturing environment.not
sure.

I've successfully installed both multimode and singlemode fiber.

It sounds like whoever did that work didn't have a clue what they were doing
and a refund or rework should be demanded. I'd even use the responses from this
list as ammunition.

I am assuming you need an IP camera solution. If I am incorrect in my
assumption, I apologize.

We have used the Milestone XProtect product with good success for the past
year. Cost is a concern for us, so we went with the "Essentials" edition, which
basically boils down to $50 per camera licensing costs on a single server. With
your larger environment, you may wish to use some of their higher-tier
solutions.

RE: video surveillance software recommendations

2011-10-03 Thread Thomas Mullins
The biggest problem we are having is cameras showing up in the Monitor Station.
Many times, either the analog or IP cameras will drop out. Another big
problem is, if you password protect the IP cameras, one or more of the IP
cameras fail to show up in the Monitor Station. Many cameras just drop out.
Another problem is the Video Server s/w will not save changes.

Curious. What bugs are you seeing?
Do you have IP cameras or analog to ip converters? We have a mix.
What brand cameras if they are IP. I've heard some cameras work better than
others. All our IP cameras are various model Axis.
We are running ver 4.3.0.30 x32 with 85 cameras and it works well.
My biggest complaint is they don't have an easy upgrade path to the X64 version.
We had one issue where the embedded sql database reached the 4gig limit, but
tech support worked tirelessly to find and resolve the problem.
Turned out that the system had lost delete rights to the video folder and it
couldn't delete old files.
Fortunately we didn't run out of space.
System is on a Dell pe-2950 with 6tb video storage. 2x ZEON 2.x cpu and 4 gig
ram. OS is Win 2008.
Like I said, I'd like to upgrade to win 2008r2 but they said we would loose our
config and videos.
I'm thinking that next year we will upgrade the server and start over with the
64bit version.

Folks,

I need some small 1 GB POE switches here for a separate wireless network. 12-16
ports per switch is all I need.

Anyone have any favorites?  I've used 3COM/HP here for years.  But...I tried to
call HP for pre-sales support, and the 800 line on HP's web site is
disconnected.  My reseller somehow ordered the wrong switch model for me and
now HP is being obsterperous about returning it.  So it does not have to be HP.

Thanks,

imagine any company that does fiber doing something like that.

Ya, I don't think that's going to work. Not even sure how they were able to do
that. Did they test the fiber before you (someone) signed off on the job? I'm
thinking you're going to have to either break it again and splice with the same
type of fiber, or run a whole new run. Personally, I'd lean towards the new
run.

>>> Thomas Mullins mailto:tsmull...@wise.k12.va.us>>

I hope this is not off topic too much. But, here goes:

We had a piece of multimode fiber that was damaged at a local high school.
This piece of fiber ran no more than 300 yards from the main building to a
field house.

The original piece of fiber was multimode. The local school had an outside
company splice the damaged section. This company made the splice with single
mode fiber. Multimode fiber has a diameter of about 62.5 microns, single mode
fiber has a diameter of 8 to 10 microns. I have no idea if this is legal.

This piece of fiber will not light up for me. The school purchased FX
transceivers. To my knowledge, FX transceivers will work with both single and
multi mode fiber.

Thanks
Shane

>>> Thomas Mullins  10/3/2011 6:23 AM >>>

Thanks
Shane

turn the Bionic sideways the on screen keyboard becomes pretty big...bigger
than the slider and very easy to use if you want to peck type on it. I think
this is one of those instances where until you force yourself to get used to

I would not give up the 4G for a sliding keyboard. I don't surf a lot either

Where did "txt_netblocks.pearsoncmg.com" come from? That doesn't appear to
be an existent domain name. It's even questionable syntax; Internet host names
aren't supposed to contain underscores.

Also, you want to query the authoritative nameservers directly; otherwise,
you're just seeing what's in your cache. Given your original message, I found:

> dig +noall +ans ANY media.pearsoncmg.com. @ns.pearsoncmg.com.
media.pearsoncmg.com. 900 IN CNAME
media.pearsoncmg.com.edgesuite.net.
>

Mr. Aldrich is right: This appears to be hosted by a Content Distribution
Network, so you're likely to find the IP address varies all over the place.

I don't know about other firewalls, but recent SonicWalls allow you to create
network objects based on FQDN and then use those objects in your rules. Might
something like that be an option? It's been exactly the ticket for me when
having to deal with a situation similar to what you are facing.

Good morning everyone,

Our students have an online class that uses a lot of videos. When ran through
the general student proxy, the quality of these videos is very bad. In the
past when we have these issues, we would route traffic to these hosts out a NAT
gateway. Then we would tell IE not to proxy for that host. This may not be
the best way, but it works for our situation.

This particular host media.pearsoncmg.com uses a round robin type of DNS. If
you do a DNS lookup today, you may get 64.211.144.100. Then another class will
get something like 69.31.16.217. We have contacted the people who run the
course, and they will not give us the IP range. Is there a way I can get that
information across the net?

Thanks
Shane

Is there any updating that needs to happen to SNORT on occasion? I know ours

Greetings!

I am experiencing a bit of a network problem with, at the moment, is more of an
annoyance (but could easily get bigger!). Somewhere I have a NIC spewing out
gratuitious ARP packets. (I did eventually hunt it down, but for the future...)

Using Wireshark, I have the MAC address of the offending NIC. Again, for the
future, is there a ping command switch or something else which will enable me
to enter the MAC address and have the IP returned?

Wireshark does indicate the offender is a Dell system. However, being mostly a
Dell shop, pinging each node here and then examining my ARP cache is rather
slow...

Thanks!

RE: PIX replacement

2010-06-01 Thread Thomas Mullins
I would vote for the ASA,

For small offices, the ASA 5505 runs about $370. The "maintenance
agreement" is only $70 a year, and allows you tech support for setup
issues and next day replacement.

The 5505 has some very nice features, especially for VOIP.

The higher end ASA appliances get pricey. But the 5505 has similar
features as the higher end models.

Sorry if I've missed something, but creating entries in the hosts file

there another prong to your attack, so to speak?

I did this is one remote site where they had a small (sometimes
changing) list of sites they wanted to allow. They had a low end router
and 1 Windows server. What I did was installed a proxy server on the
server - the one I used was relatively low cost ( somewhere around $75)
called ccproxy, which allows setting up an "allow only" list of sites,
as well as different rules for different groups of computers, which I
also needed. I pointed all their browsers to the proxy server, and
allowed only the server to have internet access at the router.

Assuming they're not on a Windows domain, the hosts file with no DNS
settings would work unless you have an enterprising user who knows to
access sites by ip address.

You could use LogParser
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=890cd06b-abf8-4
c25-91b2-f8d975cf8c07&displaylang=en

It can grab EventViewer logs and you can parse it SQL style. Script it
and loop through your DC's, then dump the data pretty much anywhere you
want.

I have been asked to determine what the network traffic is for a
particular client/server app. Other than running some bandwidth tests,
and then running them while running the application is about the best
thing I came up with. Is there any particular software that could do
something like that? A sniffer and such wouldn't tell me bandwidth used.
We are deciding whether a terminal server (75k/user) is better than vpn

Personally I like TS for the other advantages but I need to have
something close to accurate.

Cisco doesn't provide content filtering with any of their firewall
products, regardless of whether it's a PIX, ASA, FWSM (firewall service
module for Catalyst 6500-series switches) or IOS router w/the firewall
feature set (ie 85x and 87x series routers).

All Cisco does is provide a way for the firewall to communicate with a
content filtering service like Secure Computing SmartFilter or Websense.

The previously-mentioned firewall products will also transparently work
with some generic web proxies (some of which have content filtering
mechanisms) via WCCP.

Those products are the ones you should be researching.

our video/audio classes. If anyone has any suggestions on how to
measure packet loss/delay/jitter, I would greatly appreciate them.

Any thoughts on how to measure packet loss?
