Network latenice NMAP question

2012-05-10 Thread Todd Lemmiksoo
We are experiencing some disconnects from our TS farm to a Oracle DB
server. Our CEO contracted with an outside firm that had done work for the
company, before my time here, to do a network assessment of the traffic.
The company installed NMAP on our Exchange server and started a scan. Our
firewall saw this as an attack and shut down traffic to/from the Exchange
server.
What would have been a better tool for the consultant to use in stead of
NMAP. Or should they have done a better job of configuring the NMAP scan.

Comments are welcomed.

Re: Is the Office 2010 license key same for 32 bit & 64 bit

The situation is .. I bought Office 2010 for home and thought I had
ordered 64 bit, received 32 bit which I did not notice until after
installing. The DVD did not indicated which version was on it.
I have no problem uninstalling Office and installing the 64 bit version.

Missing appointments in Outlook

2011-03-16 Thread Todd Lemmiksoo
I have an executive user that is missing one appointment in his outlook
calendar that is in his IPhone calendar. I have looked in deleted items,
exchange event logs without any clue as to what may have happened. All other
appointments for the week are sync'd between Outlook and IPhone.
The executive's assistant does not know where/how the appointment came from,
or then it or did not appear in Outlook. Just that it is not in Outlook but
in his IPhone. I have not been able to talk with the executive yet.

Is there a better process that I should use to better track this problem
down?

Share permissions question

2010-12-27 Thread Todd Lemmiksoo
I am planning on making changes to a network file share that will impact a
set of health users. I will be removing inherited permissions and assigning
group permissions to the share and child folders. My question is .will
the users have to logout and login to get access back after the changes are
applied? I am not sure if the security token assigned to the users before
the change will still be good. As the security permissions will not change
for the users access to the share and child folders. The change is to assign
access by group instead of individual user ID.

Any other options I should be looking at for a small server? We're

For #2:

The remote console works fine. If you're having trouble connecting with
the console it's probably because of an SQL service configuration issue
- the remote console talks directly to the SQL engine and not the VSS. I
had to configure SQL Express to listen for connections on the ethernet
interface rather than just on the loopback.

For #3

It works fine on non-R2 2003.

The VSS makes *heavy* use of MSSQL, and if you've "only" got 2GB in the
machine you could be running into memory shortage issues. In my setup
the SQL Express instance VIPRE is using is currently sitting at 1.4GB of
memory, even though the VIPRE DB itself is well under 100MB. Granted,
the SQL instance hasn't been restarted since the upgrade; it'll be
interesting to see what it does after the reboot for today's patches.

As for the legalities, it is illegal to use terrestrial radio as MOH.
When you go to Sirius/XM's station, they partner with this company:

http://www.dynamicmedia-us.com/

In other words, you can probably get away with playing it yourself (I go
to a Schlotsky's restaurant nearby that does it), but as far as
legalities, you're probably on a slippery slope.

The Internet stream DOES time out after a certain amount of inactivity.
Your best best is to get an actual radio with an inside dock and plug it
into your phone system.

Stupid question, been wanting to do this for years and Management
finally told me to do it. Anyway, say I sign up for the Sirius internet
streaming and just plunk an old laptop on the top of the PBX rack. Does
the internet stream ever time out or will it stay on indefinitely?
Would be kind of hard to put a physical unit in, would have to get an
antenna outside. Noticed they also have a tabletop radio that uses
internet connection for it's feed. Suppose that would work also if the
feed never times out.
Thanks

Anyone running Blackberry Enterprise Srv Express

2010-02-19 Thread Todd Lemmiksoo
I have been asked to look into moving our Blackberry service from Nextel
to in-house. We currently have 6 Blackberry users, 5 sales & 1 VP. I
would be installing the Blackberry Enterprise Server Express on my
Exchange 2003 box. It has a single 2.8 processor with 4 gig of memory,
serving 65 mailboxes. I believe this would be enough horse power to also
run the Blackberry ESE applications. I'm not sure what to do about the
SQL 2005 requirement. Use SQL 2005 Express, on the Exchange box, or our
SQL 2005 SP3 box that houses our MS Great Plains Dynamics application.
Any suggestions are welcome.

What's a good place to get a new battery for a laptop? One of my
users has an HP DV8000 and says that the battery is lasting about 15
minutes, max and would like to get a replacement. I went to Froogle and
found one place had it for under $50 and Batteries Plus wants about
$115. L I'd like to get it from a place that is reasonable and will
stand behind what they sell.

Thanks!

If I disconnect the phone and connect the cable directly to the desktop,

Why is 100 Mbps for a VoIP phone an issue? That is the VoIP standard...

OR, are you saying the throughput to you your workstation gets throttled
to 100 Mbps as well? I can see how that would be annoying.

With our system, to get the full funtionality and management of our
workstations (our VoIP phones), it is necessary to connect a PC
"downstream" from the IP phone (SIP address, etc). In other words, we
do not have the option of having PCs and phones on separate wires.

Anyway, if this throttling to 100 Mbps is typical for all VoIP systems
(our phones are Polycom 430s), then I might have a good answer for our
development folks who complain about slow throughput to and from their
servers.

Something intersting to look into some day soon...

Just start Windows easy transfer from Win7, it will ask you if you need
to have the install files for other computer. If you do drop them on a

RE: Server 2k8 in 2k3 domain as a DC

2010-01-05 Thread Todd Lemmiksoo
Thanks, I think I have found the right doc on MS site (731728). This
will remain a 2003 domain as I was lucky to get funds for the new 2008
server. Do not see getting any more $ for any more 2008 upgrades.

You need to run adprep forestprep and adprep domainprep. But it'll still
be a 2003 domain until you update the other DCs and bump the FFL or DFL.

I think this has been asked in the past, but I don't remember the
answer. Can a Windows Server 2008 Std SP2 be a DC in a Windows 2003
Domain? Would I need to run a domain prep for the 2008 server?

Looks like I picked a bad time to stop sniffing glue.

How are your DNS servers configured to resolve hosts in the trusted
domain? Can you do an nslookup against the default nameservers in the
production domain? I know you said that you could ping, so it seems
like name resolution probably isn't the issue. To test that you could
put an entry in your hosts file. Just offering ideas...

The helper service is on. I'm wondering if something didn't change in
the firewall to break name resolution.
Time to pull out the sniffer.

When you say connect via the ip address, do you mean that \\ip\incoming
is successful?

One thing to check is whether the "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" service
running on the machine which you're trying to connect from?

All,
I have an issue that came up after we moved our qa lab to a different
office that I could use some advice on.
A quick overview:
Our Qa lab is on its own domain with a trust relationship to our corp
domain.
I have a Windows clustered file share on our qa network called
"incoming" that we connect to using the path
\\upload.qadomain.com\incoming Now from the QA domain it works fine, no
issues. But from our corporate domain when we use the link it says that
the "windows cannot find \\upload.qadomain.com\incoming"
Now if I ping the server name upload.qadomain.com it shows the correct
ip, and I can connect to it via the ip address?
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for any help!

RE: Defragmenting servers

Hi,

We use Diskeeper (terrible product - forever crashing) to defrag our
entire server estate. It's got a central management console but I
believe Perfect disk is a better product.

It depends on the number of users accessing the data and how big your
volumes are. You can get a very real performance degradation if you have
15 million fragmented files (especially if some are large).

Also - boot time CHKDSKs can be improved if the volume is defragged.

The only real benefit of a commercial product is they tend to be less
obtrusive to the users when they kick off. File re-ordering can be
useful on some systems but it depends if it's SAN storage with large
cache or local storage with very little cache...

Does anyone use tools like diskeeper to defrag their nondatabase

WAY back before WinXP, there was a collection from MS called "Power
Toys". They had one which would keep the focus on whatever window the
mouse happened to be in. (It would also shift focus to whatever window
the cursor was moved to - intentional or not.)

I know they updated "TweekUI" and a couple of others to run in XP.
Don't know if they'd work with Win7 (or even Vista) or not.

However, something to keep a newly-opened window from stealing key
strokes would be great for job security. My screaming disturbs
people...

All,

I see that Shoretel lets you have a choice of IM/presence integration:
MSFT LCS/OCS or a Shoretel box.

Have any of you made the choice? With no LCS/OCS already in place?

If it makes a difference, we have Shoretel 8 and E2k3 currently and no
particular plans to upgrade Exchange, though under our support we're
likely to upgrade Shoretel soon.

Any thoughts regarding this?

A happy Friday to y'all. Bowled a 199 scratch last night, with an
average of 128. Really happy about that. But that one stinking pin.
Argh!

Anyway.

We have this absolutely Jurassic-era phone system, an NEC Electra
Professional Level II. Yeah, sounds fancy, but its probably nearly as
old as me. Anyway. This thing has a voicemail card that is essentially
its own little entity. ElectraMail. (any NEC techs out there get a kick
out of Amy
Ronk?) Anyway. The hard disk is taking a dump. I sourced a Transcend 8gb
PATA SLC SSD to replace it. The thing runs DOS 6.22. Ought to be
simple.
Well, the system doesn't boot with that drive installed.

I am starting to recall the old days, before LBA, where the BIOS had a
fixed table of drive types. Considering this dinosaur of a voicemail
card only had a 1.2gb drive in it, I am guessing it is not sensing the
new drive size; i.e., its somehow locked to some fixed parameter.

Here's the kicker. This bastard of a card communicates solely over a
db9 serial console. It appears to be 9600/8/n/1. There's a ton of noise
though.
This handy serial terminal program called Realterm (a sourceforge
project) is indicating UART framing errors all across the board. This
is a regular Radio Hack serial cable with a null model adapter. I can
sorta see the text of the Phoenix Bios and "640k RAM OK" messages
through all the noise, so I'm pretty sure the baud rate is correct.

Does this sound like the VM card has just pretty much bit the dust? It
has been a good 4 years since I installed this thing, perhaps the serial
interface on the card went tits-up?

Subject: Mirroring Backup Server?

Has anyone ever heard of a backup server system that works in two or
more locations where the backup server in location 1 will back up all
the systems there (desktops and servers) and the backup server in
location 2 will do the same for its location. The two servers should
also back each other up, so if one office burns down, we'll have an
off-site backup elsewhere.

Right now desktops are primarily Windows XP, with a few *nix boxen,
servers are a mix of *nix and Windows, so I don't think Microsoft makes
a solution that will work.

For legal reasons we don't want to use a third party like Mozy,
Carbonite, or Amazon S3; since we have multiple locations, why not use
them for our offsite backups?

Total number of workstations is 25-30 in primary office, 10 in satellite
offices; when we're done, we will probably have 1 Windows or SAMBA
file-and- print server in each satellite office plus several in primary
office. Not sure if we're going with Exchange Server for our mail server
or something FLOSS.

Please don't suggest BackupPC, although it would work perfectly for an
in-house solution, its reliance on hard links means it's not feasible to
use rsync to mirror it to an offsite location.

Several weeks an OT discussion occurred regarding vision correction
surgery, in which I stated that I was going to an evaluation appt. to
see if I would benefit from LASIK.

Well, I'm really happy to report that yes I was a good candidate and
that last Friday, 9/11 I had the LASIK eye surgery done. I actually had
what is called monovision correction, this is where one eye is corrected
for distance and the other is corrected for reading. 7 hours after the
surgery I was seeing 20/15 for distance and could read the smallest line
on the reading test. I had absolutely no adjustment time needed for the
monovision.

Sorry for the OT, but several people wanted to know how it worked out
for me on this, so there ya go.

Have a great Friday!!

If you had noticed that when you opened it, you could do a warranty
exchange with the reseller. Now, you'll probabbly need to order
replacement media. Call Microsoft Supplemental Parts at 800-360-7561.
Media kits were around $25 last I had to do this. They might do it
free (or for S/H) if you can convince them you never got it.

One of the three servers that had the problem after the MS upgrades blue
screened last night with a device driver error (the message said it
could not determine the driver or device responsible). May not be
related to the updates, but it has been doing fine for a year. Then the
upgrades, then the problem.

Has anyone else sent his continuing behavior?

I've got a problem w/ the above after I installed a 8GB kit certified by
Crucial to be compatible w/ the SC1435. Dell support says, "It's the RAM,
stupid. You didn't buy it from us." I'm getting ready to call Crucial, but
wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this or how to get the "System memory
configuration is not optimal." error that precedes the F1 to continue message
to "go away".

I have the server set up w/ the original 2GB kit (from when server was bought)
& added the 8GB kit. BIOS sees 10GB of RAM, and Windows sees 10GB of RAM.
I've tried it w/ just the 8GB kit installed, and get the same error. If I go
back to the 2GB only, the error goes away (of course).

Interestingly, when I configure IE to not go through ISA as a proxy
server, I can get to it (albeit with the cert error).

So cert error + ISA seems to be the problem.

Is that expected behavior from ISA?

Hi Todd,

Try recreating your rules, and create a separate one for each publishing
scenario. That is to say, run the wizard three times, one for OWA, one
for OMA, and one for ActiveSync.

A problem started this weekend where my OWA users are being prompted to
change their network password even if it is not ready to expire. After
they change their password successfully they are denied access. I can
use OWA inside the network without any trouble and I do not get the
change password screen. I do not have a copy of the denied access
screen, will try to get one tonight.

Last week I was making changes to Exchange and ISA to give access to OMA
and Exchange ActiveSync. How would this have caused the change password
screen to be presented to the OWA users.

Hi Everyone,

We are moving to MS Dynamics Great Plains, version 10. We go live in a
few months. What I see is that the Great Plains client is slow on
remote desktops and via the Terminal Servers. The client goes
non-responsive for a minute, then finally the user can log on, select
the company, and go about his business.

Once in the client performance, while not blazing, is acceptable.
Closing the client is pretty quick.

The terminal servers are loaded with memory and CPUs and there is barely
a performance change when the GP client loads. On the GP SQL 2005
server, same thing. I've been looking at performance stats all day and
except for the occasional CPU spike, nothing is going on.

I'm guessing the is a SQL issue? Any suggestions? I have other SQL
2005 apps on other servers and don't see this sort of slow client issue.

Thanks,

Greetings!

Workstations here are all WinXP Pro, are DHCP clients, and belong to a
Windows 2003 "Native" domain.

I just happen to have unassigned space on my system drive, and I just
happen to have a Vista Business install CD (properly licensed and
awaiting installation).

SO, as the DHCP client gets its lease based on its MAC address (my
machine has only 1 NIC), how might I go about installing Vista and
having it function properly in the network (without damaging the status
of the alternative XP installation)?

NO, I will NOT set it up as a VM on my desktop system - I did that once,
and it was simply offal!
