RE: MS Updates Issues?

2012-07-11 Thread Troy Adkins
My office machine (Win7 Pro 64-bit) did the same as Don's. After rebooting and
Applying Registry Changes, logged on and it's been working fine.

We still have a few XP boxes, but haven't gotten any calls on problems with
those.

My home machine (W7 Ent 64-bit) installed 12 updates last night. Took about
20-30 minutes, rebooted once, performed “Applying Registry Changes” prior to
the logon screen coming up, rebooted again and then came up normal.

Used it for about an hour after that and no apparent issues.

We're experiencing problems with out 10% of our client machines following the
recent spate of updates. Machines hang after log on, MS Office apps stall,
etc. Haven't been able to narrow the problem down to a specific update,
though. Making a successful Safe Mode log on and then a restart seems to get
things going again.

Anyone else have similar problems today?

Any idea what might be causing it? Some kind of corruption with the IP

Microsoft has released a security advisory to address the revocation of
a number of unauthorized digital certificates. Maintaining these
certificates within your certificate store may allow an attacker to
spoof content, perform a phishing attack, or perform a man-in-the-middle
 attack.

The following certificates have been revoked by this update:
  * Microsoft Enforced Licensing Intermediate PCA (2 certificates)
  * Microsoft Enforced Licensing Registration Authority CA (SHA1)

Microsoft has provided an update to all support versions of Microsoft
Windows to address this issue. Additional information can be found in
 Microsoft Security Advisory 2718704.

US-CERT encourages users and administrators to apply any necessary
updates to help mitigate the risk.

Yeahwhen I saw how kludgy it was, I gave up the idea of trying to use GPO,
and just wrote a batch file and directed my users to the batch. Detected the
bit version of the OS, installed the appropriate bit version of Lync, the
latest rollup, the required internal certificate, and appended an install log
to let me know if the install failed or succeded...if it failed it would give
me an idea of why, but most of the installs went without a hitch. I was only
rolling out to 100 or so people, so GPO was not a big deal anyway.

If you KNOW that all of your clients have silverlight and the other
prerequisites, then GPO would probably work.

GPO Question

2012-04-20 Thread Troy Adkins
I have a GPO (computer config) defined that runs a script from the
'netlogon' folder. The vendor has the vbs script calling an .msi file to
install an app, per their instructions.
Not the way I would've preferred, but I assume it was done that way to
allow for a registry configuration based on 32-bit or 64-bit OS.

I want remove that script and remove the software/app that the script
installed.

I found the below, but not sure if this will do what I want.

http://www.winvistatips.com/delete-logon-script-all-users-t695675.html

Just by removing the GPO from the OU doesn't uninstall the app.

Re: HP Universal Print Driver

We have been using it here. Been working really well for us.
Actually, the UPD cleared up a couple of print problems we were having

(We installed it for testing and it corrupted two other HP print

support was worthless when they didn't just refuse to help. This
seems to be par for any HP printer driver or printer support since
circa 2007.

Now, since then, HP's prolly rewritten the driver completely at
least twice, so the problem we had are likely not your problems.
(Other than the overall problem of having HP print drivers.)

We eventually ended up hacking up the PCL 5 driver that came with
Win XP into a generic printer driver, and using that with almost all
of our LaserJets. And we stopped buying HP printers.

Re: Any one has expereince with http://www.desktone.com/products/ or Onlive

2012-03-21 Thread Troy Adkins
I just read about the OnLive product yesterday.

Downloaded the free version for my iPad and tried it out.

Not bad. The free version only lets you use IE9, that is provided, to use
only the links/favorites provided.
I assume the paid version is open use for IE9.

It also uses DropBox for file storage. Haven't gone much more into it,
but I think it has potential, in some fashion.

Our agency made a small effort into reviewing tablets. We struggle with
agency data going out of the building. Currently we have people that use a
laptops but use the Cisco VPN to connect, so little data resides on the
laptop.

Tablets could be a better solution, but I seem to remember that the
Androids didn’t work with the Cisco VPN. I would think the Win7 tablets
would work.

I am not recommending this, but a few months ago I saw a Viewsonic 10
Tablet demonstrated. The unique thing about that one was the dual OS, it
had Android, and Windown 7. The time to switch between the two was a
matter of less than 10 seconds. I have yet to get a demonstrator, even
though I have repeatedly asked, but I am still interested. I am probably
going to try out an ASUS tablet in the next two weeks to see how they work
with our environment. The Asus also runs windows 7. If you want a real
interesting option look at the Yoga by lenovo. It is not due out for a
few months and will run windows 8 but it is pretty cool from the online
reviews I have seen.

Cert Error - Reason Code 295

2012-02-16 Thread Troy Adkins
I have a CA in one Forest and a Sub CA in another Forest that I validate
certs. The cert in the Sub CA expired and I'm trying to issue a new one.
The tech in the Sub CA creates a request for a cert in his Forest/Domain.
I get it and create the cert for him and send it back. This is for our
wireless network.
We have Forest Trusts set between the 2 Forests...

When he tries to use it, the below error is recorded in the Event logs, on
my IAS server.

I/We can't seem to put our fingers on what is the problem.
I've added the sub cert to the Trusted Root of Authority and it is
verified.

Reason-Code = 295
Reason = A certification chain processed correctly, but one of the CA
certificates is not trusted by the policy provider

Yes, but it will eat your 10.100.10.x

It would be 10.100.10.x with a subnet of 255.255.254.0 and would have the
range of 10.100.10.x through 10.100.11.x

http://www.subnet-calculator.com

Can you migrate it all up the scale to 10.100.15.x? Or further in my
opinion, leave yourself lots or room between the subnets so you don’t face
this again.

With my lack of IP subnetting knowledge. I have the following need.

If I have 10.100.10.x network, a 10.100.11.x, and a 10.100.12.x..

I need to expand my 10.100.11.x network from 254 to 508. Is that
possible?

No image to go bad. Just wondering, if a computer is re-imaged, instead
of degaussing, it takes less time.
My image is pretty much the factory state. If I pass the computer on to

re-imaged.

I know on DOD approved degaussing, it's not.

Any copy from any of the tools listed will redo the perms. Any move, whether
CMD or explorer will maintain the current perms. Robocopy with the /mov...I'm
not so sure. Does xcopy do moves?

If the files are staying on the same drive, I see no reason to do a
copy...unless of course you want an extra copy :)

Greetings,

Woke up today to find that both systems at home have updates scheduled for
2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 3. However, I don’t have that
installed, I have Office 2010.

I’ve checked out KB articles 2526086 and 2591039 and didn’t find any
indication that it was suitable for Office 2010.

I’ve never seen this situation before, so I’m just curious if others
noticed the same thing, if the two packages are so similar that the SPs
cover both, or basically other opinions on the situation.

Thanks in advance,

I that case you either need to remove the registry entries or you can run
the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup utility. Unfortunately, that is
not offered by MS anymore but you can still find it out there for

is not marked for installation or the plugin version that is what your
problem is. You can delete these entries in HKey Classes
Root\Installer\Products. Once those are removed you should not have any
issues.

It fails to deploy, just logs that its rolling back.
Until I get onsite and crank up logging I won’t know why, just thought if
there was something known about 11 you guys ran into…

Thanks!

What is the problem you are running into? I have had some problems
deploying Flash but I have resolved them.

Anyone seeing issues with this?
Won’t get a chance till weekend to troubleshoot with logging, but all
versions other than this work fine in a 08r2 domain with windows 7
clients.

Thanks!
