See what a pawn shop would buy it for, then that's your real world low value. :)

jason

We are spinning off one of our divisions into a separate company and one of
the company laptops is going into the new company. We need to charge the new
company for the value of the laptop. How would one go about figuring the
current retail value of a used laptop?

re: Weird machine issue (home user)

2011-07-05 Thread techconnect
Back the profile up to a external drive scan it from a clean machine. fdisk
/mbr and format the drive, do a clean install and updates and antivirus updated
then restore the data. Only then can you be sure that you didn't miss something
and ask for repeat work.

jason
One of my former co-workers asked me to look at his computer awhile back. I
cleaned a piece of malware off it and he was happy. A few weeks back he
called me and said it was acting strange again, so i took a look at it and
ran the usual tests (malware bytes, Vipre Rescue) and nothing was found. I
ran the "autoruns" and found a few "suspicious" or unnecessary things at
startup so I disabled those.

The computer in question is a few years old Dell running XP Media Center.
It has Vipre Home Premium on it. This afternoon I ran TDSSKiller on it and
*that* didn't find anything.

The main symptoms are just general sluggishness opening *any* app and
severe sluggishness on the internet. The internet *could* be the ISP. He's
getting about 2.5 mb/sec down and should be getting at least 10, from what
I've been told.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on any other utilities
I could try or any other suggestions?

If you have a massive wide reorganization of account reps to match up with
geographical location, please notify your customers, it's just good customer

Also, if you fail to do that, please at least quote the order correctly the
first time. Quotes with items missing, quantities wrong on multiple products
"don't look too good."[2]

One last thing. Do not quote me pricess in excess of what I see on the premier

We have a file server where users SHOULD be storing their data. However,
users still continue to store their data in My Document and their Desktop.

I am being told to come up with a solution to backup THAT data. We do NOT
have BackupExec or any other paid-for backup program. We backup data on
the file server to a USB drive using the built in MS Backup tool that is
part of SBS2003.

Any ideas on the best automated way to backup 10 or so user machines with
their Desktop and My Documents data to a single shared location (we have a
large NAS device which has plenty of space and is shared out).

Treesize is also a great program for helping determing where your hard drive
space is going like users with mega profiles, etc.

jason

Yeah... well, I did clean it up to just a hair over 2 gigs free on the C:
drive. I don't really think I can afford to reboot the server during work
hours...but I'll see if I can't stay over a bit and test it after hours.

I suspect that you may be right on the memory leak. I think I may even know
what it was... I think it might have been ICVerify. Since we're not using that
any more, I went ahead and uninstalled it. With any luck, that'll clear it up.

Test the memory with memtest on a bootable cd, though rebooting the server

Rule #1 Develop a plan.
Rule #2 Follow the plan.

One other option I'm thinking of is that I may be running low on disk space on

2 gigs free.

Someone needs to take away his magazine readingprivileges.

Just a couple of questions, assuming no one is concerned about (or has given
any consideration to) latency.

Does your organization have any redundant internet connectivity?

What servers do you have today, and where are they? (How many offices,
buildings, etc)

ASB (My Bio via About.Me)
Exploiting Technology for Business Advantage...

1 dell 2950 2003 AD and exchange 2003 1tb Raid 5
2 buildings connected w/ 100mb fiber and 1 other building down the road with
ipsec vpn tunnel( at this location we have a limping Dell sc-1500 2003 server
replicating just AD and doing backups across the tunnel) they give us no
budget and expect us to work with what we have and then we ask for replacement
servers and they say lets move to the cloud.

No redundancy on the internet, just cox business fiber.

I appreciate everyone suggestions even the cartoon:). But sometimes I have a
problem convincing the administration of needed changes and upgrades and
looking for pointers.

Flushed the DNS cache
Released and renewed IP via DHCP

Tried multiple browsers (Firefox, IE, Google Chrome)

Dumped the IE cache

Installed all the latest patches

Uninstalled expired anti-virus products (i understand that Norton has been a
cause of this in the past, but n this case the AV is Avast Home Edition)

Switched off any personal firewalls

Unsuccessfully rolled back to a System restore point three months old

Trouble-shot the NIC to ensure successful operation

Reset the winsock catalog

Removed the winsock and winsock2 registry entries

Reinstalled the TCP stack

Swearing at it

I am poised with the XP install disk and ready to wipe the OS and rebuild

Yes, it's something fubar with our CRM implementation. I'm trying to track this
down. Tickets are being seen but there is a problem with routing.

Glad you're back, Marc -- Lord knows we need all the help we can get out there.
In particular, these website infections keep getting by my security suites.

NTSYSADMIN friends,

I first joined this list approx. 10 years ago when I was 17 years old
and first founding eEye Digital Security. I found it to be a valuable
resource to hear from IT folks working in the trenches attempting to not
only manage but also secure their networks. Even after my company went
from 2 people with an idea to tens of thousands of customers and the
largest organizations in the world as customers I still find this list
to be invaluable as well as the friends I have made and stayed in touch
with for many years. After a few years break from the company I
co-founded, eEye, I recently rejoined the company as CTO. Having run
hard for a good 9 years I simply had to take a break a few years ago and
it was an amazing chance to gain some great perspective which I am
bringing back with me. I look forward to continuing to hear from all the
friends I have made here on this list and I think given all of the
shifts in technology there are a lot of new interesting attacks and ways
that attackers are monetizing hacking that will continue to require a
close collaboration among IT folks and security researchers. I have more
on the matter here:
http://blog.eeye.com/general/marc-maiffret-returns-to-eeye-as-cto and
stay tuned to the blog as I outline some very interesting research on
how attackers are quickly moving beyond the normal financial and
identity theft that we are used to reading about into more interesting
areas of data and access that we do not normally think about securing.
