RE: [OT] The infection continues to spread (HP)

2011-08-19 Thread Ken Schaefer
Yes - I agree with what you're saying below. When HP did acquire Palm, the
world wasn't dominated by Android/iOS (well, iOS was pretty big). So, if the
execution was right, there was still an opportunity. The problem was the
execution.

Anyway, all things start from somewhere: Android started from nothing too.

That said, I'm not hopeful about WebOS - certainly not as a mass market
consumer tablet product. Maybe they'll find some niche areas to sell it into.

Cheers

As I understand it, the only reason for acquiring Palm was to get WebOS. Then
they screwed up by waiting too long to enter the market with a product that was
not ready and lacked app support.

As to the future of WebOS, who else would want it? The HP failure is a major
black mark, whether earned or not, whether the OS is superior or not. The name
of the game is apps. Without developer support and a large catalog of apps,
buyers won't pay a competitive price for a device that may be slightly better
in ways most users won't notice. I wonder how Playbook sales are doing at
Blackberry and whether it can survive, for the same reasons.

RE: [OT] The infection continues to spread (HP)

2011-08-19 Thread Ken Schaefer
1) There's a vast amount of capital tied up in that division - capital that
could be spent on more profitable opportunities
2) By giving shareholders one share in "HP PC Group" plus one share in "The
rest of HP" then those shareholders that don't want to have their money tied up
in a company making commodity desktops can sell out, whilst still having a bet
on the rest of the product lineup
3) Whilst PSG might be profitable now, I personally see the margins just
getting squeezed to the point where it won't be profitable. IBM did the right
thing by getting out (IMHO). Dell's going nowhere with their PC business -
they're trying to find other markets.
4) I don't live in America, so if I was a shareholder, I really wouldn't care
about the "something's wrong with America" thing - I'm trying to decide whether
I should put my money in HP or Google or... . So HP's got to
respect the fact that the owners have choices on where to put their money

Cheers

RE: [OT] The infection continues to spread (HP)

2011-08-19 Thread N Parr
Exactly, my general train of thought was...

Ohhh HP has a new tablet now. What version of Android is it running?
Huh, Web/O-What?

Like you said, look at Playbook sales compared to IOS/Android.
Blackberry already had an infrastructure of similar devices, market
share and development compared to HP. And HP says "lets go with
something totally different that everyone will have to start over with
and few have even heard of".
Sure we deal with users every day that wouldn't know the difference
between and Android and apple tablet. But for the most part consumers
who are going to drop $$ on a tablet tend to do a little comparison
shopping and would figure out it doesn't run what all the other tablet
in the world do. When the ads started for HP tablet my wife commented
"that looks neat". I told her it doesn't run Android and her reply was
"then why would anyone want it".

This is fascinating and yet explains a recent presentation from them.

We have been toying with VDI and have been looking at several options.

We asked them to come in and present.

This they did. However, they had no formal presentation, slides, nothing.

Just verbal what we should be doing and what they might have in the future.

RE: [OT] The infection continues to spread (HP)

2011-08-18 Thread Level 5 Lists
Interestingly enough I just saw a very interesting investor (facebook, linked
in etc) who was talking about how Apple makes so much profit in their hardware
and how they basically re-wrote the entire hardware model etc etc ... and he
was saying money is going back to hardware but more in tablets/devices and such
and not as much in general 'box pc' type stuff ... was pretty interesting...

He also predicted the demise of google with search being dead on handheld
devices as compared to a pc...

It makes lots of revenue, but very little money. PSG has ~5% margin, which will
probably only fall further in the future. HP Services has a margin of ~15%, HP
Software around 20%, IPG is ~17% etc.

Supposedly the margins are low, but it's still their biggest revenue
generator. I don't get it. I mean, I'm sure some MBA can spew buzzwords about
why, but fundamentally, I don't get it. The money is still green, regardless
of how it's made.

It's all about the bottom line and making the share holders happy. In this
case the PC market is too low of a margin to keep them happy. I wont be
surprised of it gets sold instead of spinning it off.

I generally agree with your statements. However, it's going to take a few
more quarters of more sensible looking action to allow most people to
conclude that they have *now* attained (or regained) some direction.

One key part of direction is communication, and HP could have done much to
mitigate the manner in which today's announcement was received. Only time
will tell, but they have much territory to recover in the "trust" and
"apparent competence of leadership" department.

Yah, I heard that this morning. I wonder what "personal computer"
means in this context. Do they just mean home and consumer laptops,
or also the business desktop/laptop machines, or everything smaller

I also find it telling that in the same breath, they're talking more

2011-08-18 Thread Ken Schaefer
I don't think HP is getting rid of WebOS - just getting out of the hardware
part. Presumably they will license it to other hardware ODMs/OEMs

HP is thinking about getting out of the personal computer market ala IBM and
their deal with Lenovo. The margin in PCs isn't there

No major moves in servers (other than the problem HP has with Itanium). The
Data Centre area (from servers to storage to networks to security to monitoring
etc.) is still a big part of HP

HP Getting rid of WebOS - Okay, it could make sense. I could see some higher-up
saying "We've put a lot into this, and it's failing! Cut it!"

HP Getting rid of their desktops - Huh? Aren't they #2 in that field? This is
the bit that doesn't make sense at all.

Is HP getting rid of their server business as well? Anybody heard either way?

Seriously. The T790 is replacing a DesignJet 750C which was old
enough to vote, and had simply worn away too many parts that aren't made
any more.

I had a customer who had a LaserJet II in service as of a few years
ago, and prolly still does. I expect it would still work after a

Seriously. The T790 is replacing a DesignJet 750C which was old
enough to vote, and had simply worn away too many parts that aren't made
any more.

I had a customer who had a LaserJet II in service as of a few years
ago, and prolly still does. I expect it would still work after a
nuclear war; the cockroaches will have something to print with.

Well the procurve line would make more money if they charged Cisco like

I can see the direction they are taking, software and services are more
profitable and the PC market is not. At the same time they are spinning
off the PC division so the shareholders will get something out of it in
the long run. I think they are following IBM's lead here and they are
doing quite well overall. I wonder what will happen with the ProCurve
line, I'm sure that all depends on the profit margin!

Yah, I heard that this morning. I wonder what "personal computer"
means in this context. Do they just mean home and consumer laptops,
or also the business desktop/laptop machines, or everything smaller
than a refrigerator, or anything with an x86...?

I also find it telling that in the same breath, they're talking more
acquisitions. I realize this is a simplistic view, but it strikes me
as lacking direction.

Agreed. Hopefully, the new CEO will not follow the old in that category and
stick with cleaning house and making their existing products resemble what
they used to as far as quality goes.

HP is discontinuing their WebOS operations and going to spin off their PC

RE: [OT] The infection continues to spread (HP)

2011-08-18 Thread Steven M. Caesare
No kidding.

We had an actual HP plotter (you know, actual pens held by the robotic
gripper) back when I go my first real IT job that probably would still
work today. Replaced by a large-format HP inkjet "plotter" (model long
forgotten), that also was of that design era. This was 1990-ish..

Oh, that's also back when HP was of the mind that you should actually be
able to _USE_ all the ink you purchased in your cartridges, and didn't
feel like the protocol that the cartridge uses to talk to the printer
was of such national security importance that it need be encrypted[1].

-sc

[1] What you say? It also just happens to allow HP to sue makers of
compatible ink cartridges for violating the Digital Millennium Copyright
Act, effectively locking them out of the market? Convenient

The suck which has infested HP for the past several years continues to
spread. We just today took a delivery of a brand new DesignJet T790.
$4500 wide-format printer.

The control panel UI is slow and often doesn't respond to finger
presses. It does, however, have lots of high color graphics and
animations.

Web UI has two different credential schemes depending on what page
you're on. Some pages want you to leave the username field blank; other
pages want you to use "admin" for the username.

Won't load paper. Seems like it's not actually trying to feed.
After trying to a bit, it says "Edge of roll not found". Prompts me to
lift the lever and unload paper. I lift the lever. New message:
"Lever unexpectedly lifted". Lather, rinse, repeat.

Support guidance says load the latest firmware.

Look for firmware. It's not under "Download drivers and software".
Eventually find it under a howto section.

309 MB file! Get download started.

Since I'm downloading, decide to grab drivers. Check under "Download
drivers and software". Don't see drivers. Mainly just this "HP ePrint
and Share: Easy printing" thing. That claims to be a radical new
technology that lets me print without drivers or software.
To use it, all I have to do is download and install this software.
Umm...

Eventually find drivers under some other howto page.

Firmware download finished. It's just a binary blob, no checksum
info, no wrapper like ZIP or anything. I just have to hope for the
best. Takes several minutes to load. Since then the machine's gone
offline and hasn't come back.

I'm dreading the day the corruption reaches the ProCurve division.

It may be starting already. I received an email this morning with the subject:
"Critical Alert for your Modular Ethernet Switches and Fixed Port L3 Managed

reboots.

K.15.05.0002 was released June 20 but the advisory is dated August 5. Over 6
weeks to figure it out. Ouch!

[OT] The infection continues to spread (HP)

2011-08-16 Thread Ben Scott
The suck which has infested HP for the past several years continues
to spread. We just today took a delivery of a brand new DesignJet
T790. $4500 wide-format printer.

The control panel UI is slow and often doesn't respond to finger
presses. It does, however, have lots of high color graphics and
animations.

Web UI has two different credential schemes depending on what page
you're on.  Some pages want you to leave the username field blank;
other pages want you to use "admin" for the username.

Won't load paper. Seems like it's not actually trying to feed.
After trying to a bit, it says "Edge of roll not found". Prompts me
to lift the lever and unload paper. I lift the lever. New message:
"Lever unexpectedly lifted". Lather, rinse, repeat.

Support guidance says load the latest firmware.

Look for firmware. It's not under "Download drivers and software".
Eventually find it under a howto section.

309 MB file! Get download started.

Since I'm downloading, decide to grab drivers. Check under
"Download drivers and software". Don't see drivers. Mainly just this
"HP ePrint and Share: Easy printing" thing. That claims to be a
radical new technology that lets me print without drivers or software.
To use it, all I have to do is download and install this software.
Umm...

Eventually find drivers under some other howto page.

Firmware download finished. It's just a binary blob, no checksum
info, no wrapper like ZIP or anything. I just have to hope for the
best. Takes several minutes to load. Since then the machine's gone
offline and hasn't come back.

I'm dreading the day the corruption reaches the ProCurve division.
