RE: Image Editing software

By network access and sharing, I mean that all the photos are located on a
network share and multiple computers need to be able to access them and make
changes and update them. Using PS Elements they can't use multiple machines
because it does not update any changes made by another user.

I really don't know what you mean by network access and sharing, do you mean
something like Adobe's Version Cue or simply files on a network share?

If free is what you need, look at Gimp. Its nearly as powerful as Photoshop, so
I assume it will meet their needs.

Hey all,

I have a client that is a furniture store. They take tons of photos that they
have to edit and tag for things such as brochures, catalogs, etc. They are
about to implement Masterpiece as their Point of Sale system, but I don't know
if it handles images in that way. Currently they are using Adobe Photoshop
Elements 8.0 for their editing, but Elements has a slow, cumbersome Online
synchronization tool that really doesn't work very well with multiple PC's
accessing centralized photo data (located in a data share on their server).
But before Masterpiece can be implemented properly they need some sort of
photo-editing software that not only allows them to handle large amounts of
photo editing and tagging but also can support network access and sharing.

I have very little experience with photo software, so I'm at a loss. Anyone
have any ideas?

Thanks,

Jay

RE: Image Editing software [OT]

2011-06-10 Thread Michael B. Smith
Correct for me as well.

We could manually type in the sequence numbers in 73-80, but it wasn't
automatic.

And given that EVERY time you hit any character (including the space bar), it
took about a third of a second for the mechanical movement to catch up - lots
of people didn't bother. And lots of people who did weren't consistent about it.

I wrote a resequencer in BASM in order to punch sequence numbers on fresh
cards. Read in a deck - write out a deck with sequence numbers. The punch
attached to the mainframe didn't have the same performance issues as the manual
punch.

  "End Of Block".

http://www-01.ibm.com/software/globalization/terminology/e.html#x2274851

I think the equivilent ASCII character is ETB (End of Transmission
Block). There's a bunch of obscure control characters designated for
data structures. They aren't much used these days.

RE: Image Editing software [OT]

2011-06-10 Thread RichardMcClary
Naw...

Our computer center had a special sorter.

The crying came about when while carrying the 1000-card deck to the
building with the card reader, the deck was dropped and sent flying - many
cards ending up in mud puddles.

Back then, I thought the formatting drum was the height of technology...

Nope... I took Fortran (that was WATFOR, before any of that crazy Fortran-77

You want to see a grown man cry? See a punch-card operator drop his 1000-card

Sounds more like you need a sharepoint type site so folks can ‘check out’
the graphic files to work on ONE AT A TIME …

I can’t think of any collaborative bitmap editors that are made for multiple
simultaneous users.

By network access and sharing, I mean that all the photos are located on a
network share and multiple computers need to be able to access them and make
changes and update them. Using PS Elements they can’t use multiple machines
because it does not update any changes made by another user.

I really don’t know what you mean by network access and sharing, do you mean
something like Adobe’s Version Cue or simply files on a network share?

If free is what you need, look at Gimp. Its nearly as powerful as Photoshop,
so I assume it will meet their needs.

Hey all,

I have a client that is a furniture store. They take tons of photos that
they have to edit and tag for things such as brochures, catalogs, etc. They
are about to implement Masterpiece as their Point of Sale system, but I
don't know if it handles images in that way. Currently they are using Adobe
Photoshop Elements 8.0 for their editing, but Elements has a slow,
cumbersome Online synchronization tool that really doesn't work very well
with multiple PC's accessing centralized photo data (located in a data share
on their server). But before Masterpiece can be implemented properly they
need some sort of photo-editing software that not only allows them to handle
large amounts of photo editing and tagging but also can support network
access and sharing.

I have very little experience with photo software, so I'm at a loss. Anyone
have any ideas?

Thanks,

Jay

Version Cue might work here. It should come with it although I am more a
Photoshop guy than an Elements guy is what you are looking for. You also need
to get the preferences set up right on each workstation so that the catalog
database is stored on the server and they all use the same path.

But the bottom line is Adobe imaging products just don't play well in a network
environment. They still strongly recommend against editing a file on a server
with Photoshop, they say copy it locally first.

RE: Image Editing software

2011-06-09 Thread Jay Dale
You can update the photos with Elements with one computer, but if you try to
edit them with another computer running Elements, it does not see the changes
made by the prior workstation. It only sees the changes that IT made. It's as
if there is a database of changes and settings per workstation rather than one
master file or database that everyone can read from.

Okay, photos on a read/write share. No problem there.

Huh? Do you mean that the photos on the share are not updated when you edit
them with PS Elements? I've never used the program... does it keep the
originals intact? (Picasa does this. I think they do it because JPEGs don't
like to be edited without re-compressing them at each save, which can loose
quality.) Can the users edit the photos and export them as new *edited*
versions right back onto the share?

Re: Image Editing software

2011-06-09 Thread Cameron
Wouldn't Picasa pretty much handle your needs? You don't want the files
opened for editing by more than one person at a time (first person can edit,
2nd is read-only sort of thing). If they are on a share, then everyone
should be able to access the latest versions?

Am I missing something here?

By network access and sharing, I mean that all the photos are located on a
network share and multiple computers need to be able to access them and make
changes and update them. Using PS Elements they can't use multiple machines
because it does not update any changes made by another user.

Subject: Image Editing software

Thanks,

Jay
