MSI Creation and Distribution

2008-04-16 Thread Kelsay, Mark
I am looking into a solution that will allow our developers to create
MSI files and then allow our network team to distribute them to our
website servers. An all-in-one package would be great but two products,
one for creating the MSI file and one to distribute them would also
work.

So far I am looking at Wise Installation Studio 7.0 and it looks like it
would suit us fine. I just wanted to run the idea past this most
respected list for any other solutions that you might be using.

Kind regards,

Mark

RE: MSI Creation and Distribution

2008-04-16 Thread Andy Shook
Mark,

I've used Wise in the past with great success and I would use Group
policy to distribute the MSI as needed, if those web servers are in a
domain. Other (domain) options are SMS/SCM to distribute but I'll defer
to TVK on those system management platforms. I've never used a 3rd
party tool to distribute packages to non domain servers but a logon
script is the first thing that comes to mind.

RE: MSI Creation and Distribution

I agree. MSI Studio was, in my opinion, the best MSI packager on the market
even before ScriptLogic acquired it and they have made it even better. Once you
have the MSI, Group Policy is the easiest way to distribute, but SCE/SCCM or a
3rd party product are preferable in that they give you the ability to report on
success/failure of installs as well as the ability to uninstall when you want
to upgrade or change products at a later date.

Have a look at MSI Studio from ScriptLogic. It tends to be less expensive than
Wise and InstallShield (Acresso) but with the same features.
