Thanks, but umpteen others told me to try the same specific vendor.  They 
don't include the nice recycling mailer like APC, but hey, if I know 
exactly what the battery is and APC doesn't want to play nicely, then I'll 
buy the battery elsewhere.

Like I'd mentioned, I bought a dozen from one vendor, but at least 3/12 
turned out to not take a charge when needed.

have one near you?  These replacement batteries, usually Chinese in
origin, tend to last about 18 months in my experience.

Sounds like a standard lead acid battery.  We buy from Digikey.
www.Digi-key.com  The part number is P218-ND.  $37.80 each and price
breaks at 10, 90  450 units.  The batteries are Panasonic.
