RE: Gmail - how do you get a human to help with an account issue?

2008-02-29 Thread Spencer Read
I seem to remember using a forgotten password option there some time ago

I'm sure there was a 5 day wait and then I had to try again, then it
went through the security question and then reset it

Still no human contact though

issue?

I've got another gmail box/address with an unknown password. All mail
sent to it appears in this mailbox, so I must have set it to forward at
some point. I want regain access to it and change that setting.

Password reset e-mails don't deliver anywhere I can access - I have no
idea what the secondary e-mail address might have been, probably an ISP
I left a long time ago.

Attempts to use their contact us form just result in the same form
message we fixed the problem, try again, and of course nothing is
changed.

Is there some trick to getting human-based help from gmail?

Carl

RE: Gmail - how do you get a human to help with an account issue?

2008-02-29 Thread Carl Houseman
In some places they say 5-day wait, in other places they say 1-day wait.

The 5 day wait is to prove that nobody else is actually using the account.
Either my account is active for reasons I know not, or activity includes
what is is now doing without any human involvement - forwarding mail
received to another gmail box. The first time I tried this I waited much
longer than 5 days - probably more like 10 days - but I still didn't get any
security question.

I even tried using the somebody else has stolen my account submission
(which would keep the account active and make password reset impossible if
the secondary E-mail wasn't known), but all I got back was the same canned
response and no change.

I know they're aiming to make a self-service system, but they need to have a
human at least monitoring that processing and able to intervene when needed.

No they don't. Yahoo is just as bad in this regard.

Once I locked myself out of a Yahoo account that had some stuff I needed
to be able to get to, I decided that the free systems were just too
expensive. I set up an account with Apples .Mac (I have several Mac's at
home too) and haven't looked back. On the few occasions I have needed
assistance, I was able to get it. It sometimes takes more then 24 hours,
but I do get a response from a real human. For less then $10 a month, I
get an ISP agnostic email account, and bunches of other benefits - esp.
with OSX 10.5 - but I was happy with just the stable email support. There
are other fee based email systems out there that cost less - I think if
you look around you can find something that will give you a human for
support - I just like the mix of features I get with .Mac.

I have a gmail account I use for stuff I don't care about and as a throw
away address, but I would never do anything important in there...
