Quite likely

It would be worth quite a lot even in scrap metal now, seeing as though
apparently it weighed as much as an elephant. I was wondering where it ended
up, but unfortunately my gran isn't as lucid now as she was when it went the
journey, so I guess it will have to remain a mystery

I'd love to have that oven.
IT was likely cast iron and coated in blue enamel.

Re: Hard Drive Recovery

2010-10-19 Thread James Rankin
My granny bought an oven in 1939 made of blue enamel. When she came to move
house in 1988, it took five guys to get it out of the door, it was that
heavy. It lasted for another eleven years before it developed its first (and
only) fault, when it stopped working completely after sixty years in
service. This in addition to having survived several near misses from German
bombers early in its career.

Compare that to today's trashy white goods, which are pre-programmed to
develop faults as soon as the warranty/extended warranty runs out.

Knowing that we're straying off subject, but I get ticked with these
"extended warranties" they're always pushing. If the product was built
worth a darn and the company stood behind their products, you wouldn't
need them. It seems like you're buying insurance in case they put out a
lemon that lasts one day past the warranty.

help line. I kid you not, they wanted a CC # before they would refer me

unless they gave me a number I would call our AG consumer protection
office and start a process with them.

The company they referred me to gave me a couple of free suggestions to
try and to their credit, it worked. Nedless to say, any further calls
will go to the company that gave me some pretty good advice and saved me
some $$ than a company that tried to extort me.

Re: Hard Drive Recovery

2010-10-18 Thread Jonathan Link
I have an LG fridge that was giving us some trouble... I called their help
line. I kid you not, they wanted a CC # before they would refer me to an
authorized service technician. I said I would not give it, and unless they
gave me a number I would call our AG consumer protection office and start a
process with them.

The company they referred me to gave me a couple of free suggestions to try
and to their credit, it worked. Nedless to say, any further calls will go
to the company that gave me some pretty good advice and saved me some $$
than a company that tried to extort me.

You think he is joking? Come on with this economy I am suprised they have
not begun to market some of there smaller models just for that purpose.
They would call them that and charge higher prices for them as well.

Any other suggestions? (I pulled the drive and put it in an external
housing. The drive registers as a drive, but shows no contents. It was not
formatted. The PC had a BSOD, then would not boot.)

RE: Hard Drive Recovery

2010-10-18 Thread Bob Fronk
This is a user notebook drive. The only backup is the roaming profile folders
that sync to the server. (The server gets backed up). The roaming profile is
good from last Thursday, but of course, they did work Friday and over the
weekend they would like to get back. (The drive failed before the profile
sync'd this morning).

The freezer trick seems to have worked, so right now, things are OK.

RE: Hard Drive Recovery

2010-10-18 Thread Bob Fronk
This isn't do or die. What I can get is what I can get. It isn't worth
sending off for professional recovery.

In the past, I have sent drives for professional recovery and it was well worth
the cost. This time, not so much.

Thanks to all for the input. Right now the "Freezer Trick" seems to have
worked. This morning the drive showed up in "My Computer", but with no data.
After a couple hours in the freezer, it showed data and I am in the middle of
copying off the needed files.

A word of caution here: if the data you're trying to recover is high-value,
you might want to consider sending it to a recovery specialist.

While I've had some luck with GetDataBack, there's always a possibility that
trying this "at home" could make the problem worse to the point that the pros
can't do anything with it either.

That's the thing BE hasn't been failing on this folder. I hate when you
assume. Now I have to go back and reconfirm every backup that it is in
fact getting the right data. :(

100 analysis and anywhere from 500 - 2700. It's not my pocket so I don't
have any issues with doing this. Based on what people have said I'll be
shocked if they don't recover this file.
I post their results when I get it back.

BE can shoot you an email when a backup fails. You set that up going
forward.

How much is the going rate these days for this type of service? Its been

many years since I had to send a drive out and at the time it cost about

$1200, this was around 10 years ago.

No just clicking noise. I just sent it off to Houston to Ontrack.
I run a lot of backup jobs on my servers but this was a pc BE reached
out to but they/user failed to tell me they had moved the folder the
data is now in. No backup. Of course this is my fault.

If the crashed HDD is recognized by the OS, you might try Spinrite from

Re: hard drive recovery service

2008-09-09 Thread Lenny Bensman
If this is for a personal or non-urgent system, Cherry Systems in Atlanta
(Marietta) is pretty cheap. I had to do mine there year and a half ago and
it cost $600. The price guarantee was min $300 & max $900 (+- 50, don't
remember exact numbers). This is their non-urgent track.

RE: hard drive recovery service

2008-09-09 Thread Eldridge, Dave

If the crashed HDD is recognized by the OS, you might try Spinrite from
grc.com
for $89 before spending much much more at OnTrack and other similar
services.

The backup wont fail if the user moved the data unless you specifically told
it to backup up that folder.
