RE: Kace K1000 System Management Appliance

2011-08-09 Thread Tom Miller
Patching is super easy in KBox. I spent about a day creating PC/server
groups (tied to AD/ldap or IP - your preference), then another
day creating my various patch groups. Since then (about a year) I've
modified the patch groups maybe once or twice. Once you create the PC
groups, the patch groups, and schedule the patches, that's pretty much
it. Very easy, and excellent reporting.

Using SCCM, patching was equally granular as the KBox, but I hated
having to spend time to clean up my patch lists. I have not used SCCM
in a year, so perhaps this has changed.

There is a metering component that you might find useful. Or reports
do the same thing.

If it matters, I've found Kace/Dell support to be excellent, better
than most vendors I've worked with. If you need something and can't
figure it out, the support guys will give you a hand. We didn't have
any SCCM support, since we purchased it with non-profit/charity
licensing.

I looked at LanDesk at the same time I looked at KBox. From the demos I
saw, it's pretty amazing. But it's expensive, and the company refused
to compete on the price point, so I discarded them from our options.

By the way, Dave, I use Kbox for reporting for our PC replacement
schedule. A simple export and I sort by model, memory, CPU and know
which need to go.

I think there are a few people on here that use it.

At my last place we tested it, before and after the Dell acquisition. Even
got very close to buying it, but the week it was due to be signed off the
company went into administration.

The features were good and I had been pushing for months to get it, but then
I moved on to pastures new and they didn't follow it up.

They used to have a vm that you could run for 30 days with I think 10
clients.

My company has been using the K1000 box when they first launched. We
were one of their first customers. It works great. The managed
installations are awesome. Security patching has gotten much better
throughout the years. It is also a great tool for inventory.

appliance, so upgrades and backups are super easy, too.

Not trying to bash SCCM. That's a good product too, but I don't have staff to
dedicate to it, like it really needs.

We manage about 1,000 PCs/servers with it. It can manage Mac and iPods if you
want, and does Dell updates.

Which features are you looking to leverage - patching?

My experience with a previous version (recent) of Kaseya was horrid. I'm

recommended it.

Yeah.that was one issue. At least when I was using it, there was no good
way to schedule updates. And, working with small customers, rebooting the
servers or workstations remotely always ended up in a remote visit anyway
(due to old computers) which minimized the effectiveness and value of using
Kaseya.

Re: Kace K1000 System Management Appliance

2011-08-08 Thread Jon Harris
Rebooting was not the issue I saw but getting the patches assigned to the
machines was an issue. A lot of clicks for little work. I don't know if I
will be able to influence them into looking at anything else. I am way down
the pole, and happy to be down here but if I end up with patch management I
may have a go at getting them to at least look at something else. I mean
assigning patches on a machine by machine basis is a little much when you
are dealing with more than 100 machines and I have no clue how many they
have.
