That's a -very- common problem, especially with Toshiba notebooks (however they use a point 'stick' type device). When the machine boots, it is -supposed- to run a sort of calibration app that fixes that sort of thing. Had the same issue on a Dell C600. Disabled the touch pad and all was well. In the future, please give more details, make and model of Laptop, OS, etc. The more you put into this group, the more you get out of it. Those touchpads are sometimes pretty sensitive to heat, like if you rest your hands around it. You might want to try temporarily disabling it to see if that is the problem (assuming you have a mouse or one of those stick-type controllers).
