My reply about the KVM cables where regarding the cables for the Raritan,
you must have thought I was referring to the Trendnet which you had
mentioned See below). I did find an OmniView that can be upgraded to IP if
you want to later and it will do USB and isn't too expensive. Thanks for the
input as always guys.

No, those 16 ports connect to proprietary dongles via CAT5e/CAT6. The
dongles plug into the USB/PS2 ports.

It is a nice unit. If I'm serious about KVM, I would either go with
Raritan or Avocent, which someone else mentioned a little bit ago. It
depends on what your needs (and possibly budget) are as to which one you
should go with. I honestly don't remember what the differences are now,
  but
at the time I made the decision, Raritan was a better choice for us.

One cool thing is that you can mount a local drive over the IP
  connection,
so as long as your connection is fast enough, you potentially would
  never
have to visit the server, even to do a bare-metal rebuild/restore.

Re: OT KVM recommondation

2010-09-17 Thread Andrew S. Baker
Across classes of equipment, you will typically get what you pay for.
Across classes, as opposed to within the class.

That is to say, MOST servers that cost $1000-3000 are different enough from
the ones costing $6000-$15000 that the sentiment is correct.

However, *within* the same class of system or machine or device -- within
the tier 1 level, or within the tier 2 level -- it is possible for cost
alone to be insufficient as a determinant of quality or value.

I'd never compare a Belkin with an Avocent, except maybe at the very lowest
end of the Avocent line.TrendNet, Belkin, and a few others play in that
consumer/SOHO space, and within that space price is not always the
differentiator.

While Avocent and Raritan are much more price comparable today, years ago,
Cybex/Avocent was better priced that Raritan AND of better quality. But
they were in the same enterprise level class... :)

And I still greatly prefer Avocent.

Across classes of equipment, you will typically get what you pay for. Across
classes, as opposed to within the class.

That is to say, MOST servers that cost $1000-3000 are different enough from the
ones costing $6000-$15000 that the sentiment is correct.

However, *within* the same class of system or machine or device -- within the
tier 1 level, or within the tier 2 level -- it is possible for cost alone to be
insufficient as a determinant of quality or value.

I'd never compare a Belkin with an Avocent, except maybe at the very lowest end
of the Avocent line.TrendNet, Belkin, and a few others play in that
consumer/SOHO space, and within that space price is not always the
differentiator.

While Avocent and Raritan are much more price comparable today, years ago,
Cybex/Avocent was better priced that Raritan AND of better quality. But they
were in the same enterprise level class... :)
And I still greatly prefer Avocent.

Re: OT KVM recommondation

2010-09-17 Thread James Kerr
Of course I totally agree, however, I never said In was looking for a cheap
KVM, just a simple one that works. I really don't need an IP KVM but now that I
have looked at what they can do they seem pretty cool but my servers are not
far and I rarely have to do any work on them that I can't do remotely. If I do
I can just pull it and work on it in my office, I only manage 10 servers, 8
here and two in another county. Is it Friday yet?

One cool thing is that you can mount a local drive over the IP connection,

We have a couple of raritan IP based KVMs at clients. I like them. You
just buy the type of dongle you need with it. Probably nothing you need
to worry about, but I found out their regular USB dongles didn't work
with some sun boxes and we needed to order different dongles for those.

you must have thought I was referring to the Trendnet which you had

you want to later and it will do USB and isn't too expensive. Thanks for the

Ditto! Every Belkin KVM I've every used was difficult to work with.
 Avocents, however, have been perfect.

My reply about the KVM cables where regarding the cables for the Raritan,
you must have thought I was referring to the Trendnet which you had
mentioned See below). I did find an OmniView that can be upgraded to IP if
you want to later and it will do USB and isn't too expensive. Thanks for
 the
 input as always guys.

It
depends on what your needs (and possibly budget) are as to which one
 you
should go with.

2010-09-15 Thread Terry Dickson
Just don't skimp on the connectors. Someone thought cheaper was better on some
we purchased. They would fail in a short period of time, and the only thing
you could do was replace them. The worst part is they would either fail on
Keyboard or Mouse and never the same one twice.Pay a little more and get a
good brand.

Re: OT KVM recommondation

2010-09-15 Thread Matthew W. Ross
I know others have been recommending more expensive models, and you won't go
wrong with them...

But we needed to replace an aging and failing Belkin 8 port KVM, and were
weighing the pros/cons of something more expensive vs the cheap 16 port
Trendnet USB/PS2 KVM...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817403059

This unit is not fancy, and the cables are not standard (They mix the
VGA/USB/PS2 into a single DB15 connector, but other KVMs do this as well). But
it has worked flawlessly and the price is exceptional. We were willing to risk
it being flaky for the price, and replacing it with something better if it did
fail us. So far, no problems.

Buying a couple of new servers and they dont have PS/2 ports so my current
KVM won't work for them. Can anyone recommend a simple rack mount 8 port
 USB/VGA KVM?

 Thanks,

 James

Re: OT KVM recommondation

I take it it doesn't come with the cables based on the fact that it isn't
mentioned as coming with any when I checked it out at CDW.

No, those 16 ports connect to proprietary dongles via CAT5e/CAT6. The dongles
plug into the USB/PS2 ports.

It is a nice unit. If I'm serious about KVM, I would either go with Raritan
or Avocent, which someone else mentioned a little bit ago. It depends on what
your needs (and possibly budget) are as to which one you should go with. I
honestly don't remember what the differences are now, but at the time I made
the decision, Raritan was a better choice for us.

One cool thing is that you can mount a local drive over the IP connection, so
as long as your connection is fast enough, you potentially would never have to
visit the server, even to do a bare-metal rebuild/restore.

You know, I've never messed around with KVM over IP. That looks like a nice
unit. I assume those 16 ports connect to the ILO ports on the servers?

We've got the 16 port version of this one, and it supports practically
everything. I like it and have not had any issues. They have an 8 port.
