RE: Disable Wireless when LAN connected

2008-12-29 Thread Hart, Robert
Well I just learned about 10 minutes ago that the Cisco SSC client will
disconnect/disable any other connection when it detects a LAN
connection, including an aircard (I tried). We are going through a
pilot stage and we just came across it.

Does anyone know about any setting or software that will disable a
wireless card when cabled to a LAN network?
I have users in a field office where another building tenant has an
unsecured wireless network. I am trying to prevent this wireless
network from bridging onto my LAN using a laptop of one of my users. I
don't want to prevent the users from using their wireless adaptors, only
prevent them from doing so while connected to the LAN.

In our office, I flip a bit in the BIOS on my HP Business Notebooks that
turns off the WLAN card if the machine is plugged into the LAN.

2008-12-29 Thread Matt Plahtinsky
You can set the LAN adapter to a higher priority than the wireless adapter.
Go to the TCP/IP settings on your NIC. On the general tab click advanced.
You need to uncheck the "Automatic Metric" and enter a number in the "Metric
Interface" Its been a long time since I have done this but I believe the
lower number wins. Set this on the wired and wireless so the wired always
wins.

Our desktop team accomplishes that with the desktop firewall (3rd party,
not builtin)

Not just for the wireless either, basically any other adapter is
disabled if the LAN is active.

Talk to the Admin at that location and suggest they lock it down.

:)

It would require visiting each machine, but I am fairly certain that there's
a checkbox to not allow unsecured connections on my wireless adapter at
home.
