I have it in my datacenter for my clients so all the mail gets directed to
me and cleaned and then pushed down to each domain. So their mailservers
basically are off the map.

Hey guys,

I am a pretty new customer of VIPRE and like what I've seen so far. Sold it
to a couple of small customers with no complaints as of yet. My question is
regarding email spam filtering. I know a lot of you VIPRE users perhaps are
using Ninja, which I'm assuming is server-based. For years I have been
using Katharion, which is similar to Postini as an offsite-based filter.
I'm just curious as to what you guys prefer when it comes to these kinds of
apps, or if you prefer appliance-based filtering.

Thanks,

Jay

I use Ninja as another layer after the SpamBlocker on my Watchguard firewall
drops the most gratuitous stuff. The latest 2007 version fixed a lot of bugs
and is finally as good as the 2003 version. For a low-volume site (<5000 legit
messages/day) it works pretty well at a low cost. For higher-volume sites, I
would definitely recommend an appliance.

We use SpamTitan, which is a FreeBSD based product using a bunch of
technologies including SpamAssasin, Clam AV and Kaspersky AV. It has a lot of
features and is reasonably priced. Available as a VMware Appliance (which is
how we are using it), a physical appliance or it can be installed from an ISO
onto your own equipment. It works very well for us. I agree that it would be
good to use an off site filter and save bandwidth, but the cost of those
services is always too much for us, being a non-profit on a tight budget.

Re: Spam filters

2009-04-29 Thread Sherry Abercrombie
Steve, you're scaring me.

Ok, I have all of our email going to some nice little *nix boxes at my colo
facility. They go through virus scanning, spam filtering, gray listing, rbl
all before being sent on to my Exchange server. However, I am looking into
adding an additional layer of spam filtering internally to catch the stuff
that does get through the colo filtering process. Ninja is one of the
applications that I'm looking at for evaluation. I do use Ninja Disclaimers
already on my Exchange server, which I hardly ever look at or even think
about. Once I got it installed and configured (which was really quick and
easy), it just works.

I certainly like something on the perimeter, especially when it can just
drop connections from known "bad guys". We use an IronMail (now called
Secure Mail, I think) and I would recommend it.

Hey guys,

I am a pretty new customer of VIPRE and like what I've seen so far.
Sold it to a couple of small customers with no complaints as of yet. My
question is regarding email spam filtering. I know a lot of you VIPRE
users perhaps are using Ninja, which I'm assuming is server-based. For
years I have been using Katharion, which is similar to Postini as an
offsite-based filter. I'm just curious as to what you guys prefer when
it comes to these kinds of apps, or if you prefer appliance-based
filtering.

Thanks,

Jay

I've been using Google's Postini Message Filtering service (cheap!) and
also Ninja and have had great success with both.

RE: Spam filters

2009-04-29 Thread Richard Stovall
I think it depends on what you're comfortable managing and how much load
you want to put on your Exchange organization. We use Ninja for Virus
and attachment filtering, but do not use it for anti-spam. It would
swamp our simple Exchange setup and lower service levels to our users.
We have a Barracuda on the perimeter that does antispam (and as a bonus
is also a front-line antivirus filter).
