The Sony has a zoom feature that you can then scroll around the larger
display with. Is this what you are talking about? Its on the side with a + -
magnifying glass. You can set different resolution on the unit (mine does)
and then move it around with the device. I radmin to mine a lot since it has
my road warrior stuff on it and use it on a full screen, very nice device.

Greetings !

I've got a friend that just picked up one of those UMPCs (a Sony) with a
4.5" screen, running Vista 'business' on it. Anyone know offhand of a
utility that will let him configure a larger 'virtual screen' and let him
use the 4.5 display to scroll around this larger screen ?

Thanks in advance

I’m definitely interested in these now. I’ll have to see about getting an
eval.

Well, there are other manufacturers making them now. I support a few of them
and have one until recently. Let me say that if you need laptop functions
(full blown o/s) and want to be able to put it on your hip or in your bag
this is the way to go. Its great for travelling since it has a dvd drive and
the back props out like a dvd player. The slide out full keyboard is small,
but a lot easier to use then say a WMP device. You get full installs like
word/office, and with built in wifi and wlan your always connected with it.

The competitors are much less money since they aren’t ‘sony’ but usually
weigh a little more or have a little less horsepower. Don’t forget it has a
dock like a laptop so you can get full key/mouse/vga functions to it as
well. Personally I thought it was a great admin tool/device but I wouldn’t
want to try to work for long periods of time on it.

I occasionally get asked about the availability of a laptop or smart phone
at my work - but no one asks for anything like these.

Oh sure. I've had this ability on just about any laptop I've owned. Just
set the screen size to be larger than the max pixels of the physical
display. Voila: Windows lets your "scroll".

This always seemed to be device manufacturer specific, but perhaps I'm
mistaken on that point.

Sounds like its definitely worth the effort then. I've yet to see a
non-manufacturer supplied driver do this - but if you find one, please post
back with the details.

Yep..the Zoom feature. It's also available on the lower right of the

IE has the option of changing the view size, which allows you to scroll
around the screen - if it's just web browsing that's a problem.

he'd like to scroll to put the 4.5" 'window' on the portion of the page he'd

no, definitely not just larger fonts, the UMPC has a 4.5" screen and for
many things just not very readable (especially some web pages and forums),
he'd like to scroll to put the 4.5" 'window' on the portion of the page he'd
like to see

I think he's referring to the Page->Zoom feature. This can also be
manipulated by holding CTRL and using the mouse scroll wheel (if present).

Oh sure. I've had this ability on just about any laptop I've owned. Just
set the screen size to be larger than the max pixels of the physical
display. Voila: Windows lets your "scroll".

This always seemed to be device manufacturer specific, but perhaps I'm
mistaken on that point.

RE: screen scroll utility ???

2007-12-28 Thread Erik Goldoff
not really popular, they've been around in one form or another for a
while... I remember the Toshiba Libretto back around 1996 to 1998, ran full
Windows, not CE, was about the size of a VCR tape and only a little more
than a pound. Got some of those when I was at the CDC, and the folks that
travelled extensively, especially internationally, REALLY appreciated the
small size.

Much more capable now in the 'official' UMPC form, they're great for mobile
folks, checking email, researching web, referencing documents and
spreadsheets, and some of them can be hooked to external monitors and
keyboards making them much more useful for regular tasks like presentations
and workflow. With a real hard drive, they work pretty well for carting
around your 'storage', but that's a double edged sword for the security
folks. And even as small as a 4.5" screen is, that's MUCH more usable than
any smartphone size screen.

The original goal of the 'Ultra Mobile PC' was to be convenient and less
expensive than a laptop, but oh well...

Seriously. I've been relatively oblivious to these types of devices until
recently. Are they particularly popular?

I occasionally get asked about the availability of a laptop or smart phone
at my work - but no one asks for anything like these.

RE: screen scroll utility ???

2007-12-28 Thread Erik Goldoff
yeah, used to be you paid a premium for LARGER ... a year or so ago, I went
shopping for a laptop with a 12" screen, small enough to fit in my
motorcycle saddlebags/trunk, ended up with a nice Toshiba unit... virtually
the same feature for feature, except for screen size, I could have had an HP
with 17" screen for over $500 LESS ... arg !

Oh sure. I've had this ability on just about any laptop I've owned. Just
set the screen size to be larger than the max pixels of the physical
display. Voila: Windows lets your "scroll".

This always seemed to be device manufacturer specific, but perhaps I'm
mistaken on that point.

non-manufacturer supplied driver do this - but if you find one, please post

I've got a friend that just picked up one of those UMPCs (a Sony) with a
4.5" screen, running Vista 'business' on it. Anyone know offhand of a
utility that will let him configure a larger 'virtual screen' and let him
use the 4.5 display to scroll around this larger screen ?

Thanks in advance

2007-12-28 Thread Erik Goldoff
no, definitely not just larger fonts, the UMPC has a 4.5" screen and for
many things just not very readable (especially some web pages and forums),
he'd like to scroll to put the 4.5" 'window' on the portion of the page he'd
like to see

I saw that on an old Dell (or maybe Toshiba) back in my NT 4.0 days, but not
sure what twist Vista 'business' brings, along with it being a Sony ... I
try to avoid Sony products (ever since their rootkit fiascos) so I can't
speak to their video drivers yet.

I remember seeing something in the past on a laptop where you could define
your resolution and desktop area differently. If the desktop area was bigger
it would scroll. Alas long ago, don’t remember where I saw it.

Sounds like its definitely worth the effort then. I've yet to see a
non-manufacturer supplied driver do this - but if you find one, please post
back with the details.
