I was under the impression that it included the touch keyboard, just like RT.

But it isn't clear from the announcement or the website.

The price is basically iPad + Windows Pro. It's higher than I wanted, but I am
not surprised.

This is less then I thought it would be. I had it pegged at $1500. With
the separate Touch Cover it's still less then I thought it would be. It's
essentially an Ultrabook with touch screen.

I plan on getting one assuming I am less broke then I am now.

Yep, I'll get one for the office as well to demo. Definitely. I think
they are trying to be Apple-like in their pricing. Some people equate
higher pricing with higher levels of quality and therefore want it more.
You slap a $299 price tag on the thing and people will stay away since it
is cheap.

64 GB model is much higher than the 64 GB iPad 3 (Wifi only). I assumed they
were going to go cheaper to steal away Apple business.

I'd opt for a full-blown laptop/netbook at that price.

Leaves the door open for future promotions i.e. keyboard now included for
free which they would much prefer to do rather than admit early defeat by
reducing the price.

The price allows their OEMs to easily undercut them, which helps smooth out
any bad feelings over MS competing for the hardware business. And no
executive wants to be seen toting around a cheap tablet. Let the rank and

IMHO it is too high. You can get small laptops for from $500 to $900 depending
on the requirements. Sure the touch screen is more but you get a lot more
connectors with a laptop than what I expect will be on a Surface. Add to that
it does not even come with the keyboard and it would be really too expensive.

The screen and the processor drive up the cost. However, Microsoft is touting
these as business units. How much processor and screen resolution does one
really need to run Office?

On the other side, these aren’t meant to compete with the iPad, but rather the
MacBook. Even after purchasing the keyboard, the Surface Pro beats the cost of
the MacBook by a few thousand. Just saw a report today that, before tax, the
latest MacBook will cost around $4000.

Re: Surface with Windows 8 Pro announced...

2012-11-29 Thread Andrew S. Baker
I agree, Carl.

It costs more than I wanted, but less than expected (feared).

It will still sell, though. I thought the iPad Mini pricing was too high,
and that's still selling. Yes, that's Apple, but there are a few people
like that in every camp. Enough to make good sales. As the ecosystem is
built up, this will become more palatable to many.

I'm personally waiting it out for a bit, though... :)
