Re: Xerox Global Printer Driver

2010-07-08 Thread Tom Miller
I tested the Global Driver here and it works fine, but some print options don't
appear on my WorkCentre copiers. For example staple was missing. Hence I
don't use it. It's not global if those sort of options are missing.

I thought it interest that it supposedly will print to almost any
PCL/PS printer regardless of vendor or model.

Anyone have experience with this printer driver?

This doesn't really answer your question, but: I looked at it
briefly when we got some Phaser 6280's recently. The download package
was around 40 MB, while the printer-specific package was like 3 MB, so
we with printer specific. The Phaser 6280 printer-specific driver
works well. We just got a Xerox WorkCentre 5755, too. The
printer-specific driver for that seems to generally be good, but it's
really slow to open the Printer Properties dialogs, for reasons I
 haven't looked into yet.

Almost any PCL/PS driver will print to almost any PCL/PS printer
regardless of vendor or model. Indeed, that's a common
trouble-shooting step: Try using the HP LaserJet 4 PCL driver that
came with the OS and see if it works when the printer manufacturer's
doesn't. That's the point of a page description language like PCL,
after all -- to make page description independent of the specific
model printer. These universal drivers basically just take that
concept and run with it.

Generally speaking, universal drivers do work, especially for simple
printing. When you get into multi-function or advanced features
(e.g., stapling), you may face limitations.

All our HP printers are using a hacked HP LJ 4 driver from Win XP.
It works better than anything HP's coughed up over the past few years.
(We had to hack it to force 600 DPI for recent HP LJ's which crash if
given a 300 DPI job.)
