RE: adding a NIC on Win 2k Server

2001-09-28 Thread Greg Page

A multi-homed computer is one that has more than one NIC, so the answer is
YES.

No. It means that the server is connected to an outside modem to provide
internet services. The server is assigned 192.168.0.1 on one port and the
other is configured to use DHCP to receive ip, dns, and gateway from a
Starband 360 (satellite) modem. I will use WinProxy as soon as I can get
the rest of this stuff working again. Setting this stuff up seems to have
messed everything up. I'm willing to shut down the other NIC, however, so
that I can get the network part of this working again.

Thanks,

Larry

Yes it does, but I'm not sure whether or not the single domain is AD
integrated. I suspect it isn't as there is an NT laptop which
occasionally connects.

I'm not sure. How can I tell?

I've tried both. At the moment I have LMHOSTS in all the machines and
fixed IP addresses in the 192.168.0.201+ area. I am only using a few
machines to test the thing.

I think we are using WINS, but now that I think about it, the domain
used to be in the 192.168.100.xxx range and I don't believe I ever did
anything with WINS, although I think that is supposed to be automatic.

>4)You mention that you use the Starband modem for internet access. Since

Yes. I've tried DHCP internally as well. I've got a file server that
seems to work very well as a DHCP server; the DC has it, but turning
it on and off doesn't seem to matter. DHCP is provided by Starband
and is how they provide an IP to the satellite modem and therefore,
the NIC.

2001-09-28 Thread Steve Jacobson

Larry,

I think I know the answer, but to be sure, I have a some of questions for
you.

1) Does this server run DNS, and if so, are the zones AD integrated?

2) Are you using Native Mode AD or Legacy Mode?

3) I am assuming that the 192.168.0.1 is for your internal lan. Do you use
static IP addresses on this LAN or DHCP? Does this server act as a domain
controller for the lan? Do you run WINS or AD?

4)You mention that you use the Starband modem for internet access. Since
you are using DHCP, I am assuming that this is for outbound internet access
and you are not hosting any internet services. Is this correct?

If you want to take this off the list, you can e-mail me directly at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am running two dual-homed Win2K servers providing Internet services as
well as running an internal lan. I use MS Proxy 2.0 and it works fine for
me. I have changed out lan cards several times, but it can get tricky.

Re: adding a NIC on Win 2k Server

2001-09-28 Thread L. M. Rappaport

Steve and Kent,

The problem stems from the fact that what actually happened is
this: I got a Starband satellite receiver and had to use the
existing, built-in NIC for it. I did that and got it working. Then I
bought a NetGear card and set it for the network. It was recognized
just fine and works, but it seems to have toasted the network. The
server is Win2k Server, the workstations are Win2k Professional, all
with all patches and Service Packs.

Maybe I should simply remove the workstations from Computers in
the server and then rename the workstations and rejoin the domain?

When I log on to the domain now, it takes a number of minutes and
"My Computer" hangs. I can't access the shares.

Thanks,

Larry

RE: adding a NIC on Win 2k Server

2001-09-28 Thread Steve Jacobson

You should just plug in the new card, and if it is plug-and-play compatible,
Win2K will find it and ask you to install the drivers for it. Install the
drivers, and then go to the "Network and Dial-Up Connections" applet and set
up the new card (it should be under "Local Area Network Connection n", where
n is probably 2. Set up your TCP/IP settings with a new IP address, DNS,
etc., and run both cards to insure that the new one works. Then go back an
unplug the old one and reboot. Once Win2K is back up, go to the Device
Manager (Control Panel-System-Hardware-Device Manager and find the Network
card with the Yellow ! and uninstall it. Then go to your new LAN Connection
and change the IP address to your original one. Then reboot again to make
sure the driver for your old card is gone.

That's always worked for me.
