drive mirror configuration with W2k
Anyone have experience (and are willing to share it) with setting up a drive mirror with W2k, it is quite different than NT. Environment is : 1.2 GHz W2K Srv PDC, (2) WD 40GB drives, ATA-100 support is built into the MB(Soyo). White papers, How-tos are what I am looking for, what I have found so fare has not been especially helpful. The problem I am having is trying to get the second drive to mirror the first drive, the OS is installed on Disk One as basic (it fails to boot if I do a configuration upgrade of it). Disk two wants to setup Volumes, Disk one wants to set up partitions. RE: drive mirror configuration with W2k
I totally agree w/ you Don, HW Raid is way better, but I have used a sw mirror w/ no trouble, ya there is an issue to make it bootable if need be, but what other probs have you had? jlc -Original Message- From: Don Ely [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, August 24, 2001 12:03 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: drive mirror configuration with W2k Yes, get a real RAID controller and setup a hardware mirror vs. a software mirror which is virtually worthless so why waste the disk. -Original Message- From: RE Young [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, August 24, 2001 10:53 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: drive mirror configuration with W2k Anyone have experience (and are willing to share it) with setting up a drive mirror with W2k, it is quite different than NT. Re: drive mirror configuration with W2k
. Was this a build from scratch or upgrade? Here's some info but you'll need to get to dynamic on both to have them both bootable IIRC in W2K. Re: drive mirror configuration with W2k
Appreciate your response Kent, The second drive has no trouble becoming dynamic, The first drive (where MBR etc are located), fail to boot after I convert it to dynamic. How can the the drive be dynamic w/o first installing the OS. BTW - (Hardware raid is not in the pocketbook for the rest of the fiscal year.) Re: drive mirror configuration with W2k
.. that's why the question upgrade or fresh install. You have to start with a clean disk and convert to dynamic immediately after install. If there is an OEM partition I believe this will cause problems.
