[nysbirds-l] Mecox Bay re-visited

2009-08-21 Thread ROBERT ADAMO
Early this morning, I had time for a quick ride out for a short visit, dreaming
of results like those experienced by Hugh & Andy later in the day. This mindset
was encouraged by the covey of (7) "tame" N. Bobwhite, that were on the road
within 100' of the western entrance to the bay-they even stayed long enough to
have their picture taken! Once on the flats, it was obvious that the #'s of
species and individuals were down from yesterday. I saw nothing new, and in
fact, could not attest to the godwits still being there, because of the Sun's
position/rays "washing out" their previous location. Cheers, Bob

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay WR: 2 Wilson's Phalaropes, American Avocet, and A. Golden-Plover Present

2009-08-21 Thread Vinny Pellegrino
A two hour walk around the North end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay this
morning revealed rewarding birds with the highlights being 2 Wilson's
Phalaropes, the American Avocet, and an American Golden-Plover amongst the
50+Black-bellied Plover flock.  Other good birds included a single Pectoral
sandpiper, approx. 12 White-rumped sandpipers, 7 Stilt sandpipers, and a Little
Blue Heron.  A total of 16 shorebird species was recorded.  All the birds seen
were once again at the North end with a few other birders around 10:30am.  At
around 11:15am, a Peregrine falcon swooped in and scared the hundreds of
shorebirds sending them in all directions.

[nysbirds-l] @JBWR Golden Plover (YES), American Avocet (YES), Wilson's Phalarope...

2009-08-21 Thread Andrew Baksh
I joined Karlo Mirth this morning after his call about the 3 Wilson's
Phalaropes on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Together, we
observed about 19 species of shorebirds with highlights being:

American Avocet (1)
Wilson's Phalarope (3)
American Golden Plover (1)
Pectoral Sandpiper (1...possibly 2)

I have yet to cycle through the photos I took. Nevertheless, I have uploaded
one photo with the three Wilson's Phalaropes and one photo of the American
Avocet that I photograped last evening. Note: Today's Avocet, seemed to be
the same one that was reported earlier yesterday.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Brown Pelican in the Adirondacks

2009-08-21 Thread Angus Wilson
Barb,

I hope you (or others) can read the band. It will be fascinating to know
where this bird originates from and whether it has been seen elsewhere in
the northeast before ending up in the Adirondacks. Maybe others who scan the
listserves recall other sightings of a banded bird?

Readers may remember that in the summer of 2002 there was an incursion of
Brown Pelicans into the Northeast involving at least 8 individuals in the
Great Lakes region with at least 3 separate birds in NYS. The pelicans
wandered widely and although none were banded (as far as I recall) one
individual was tracked by a distinctive hole in the web of one foot! Other
features such as the extent of white on the head can sometimes also be used
to say whether two birds are different or possibly the same. These are good
reasons to carefully document (in writing or photographs) unusual birds so
that we learn more about their origins and movements.
