[nysbirds-l] Queens Birds

2009-12-06 Thread Steve Walter
The Cackling Goose continues at the basin in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park,
where reported by Seth Ausubel. Today, at least, it spent considerable time
roosting on the "island", so that could be a good place to focus one's efforts.

The Ash-throated Flycatcher was still present along Cohancy St. It may be
visible for long periods of time, but may also disappear. Patience is usually
rewarded. Waiting along Cohancy St. and looking in all directions is my advice
if it's not immediately visible. That may also lead to a glimpse or two of the
Orange-crowned Warbler, which was still there today.

And also in Queens, I opened my front door this morning to the sight of a
thousand Common Grackles on nearby lawns. Hey, they're cool, and I like seeing
lots of birds.

Hawk watch totals: Eagles 34, Falcons 7.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-bellied Flycatcher at Zach's Bay (Nassau Co.)

2009-12-06 Thread Ken Feustel
Today, at about 11:00AM, I discovered a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher at the picnic
area at Zach's Bay/Jones Beach. After making a few phone calls I was joined by
Seth Ausubel, Shai Mitra, and Pat Lindsay who concurred with the initial
identification. The picnic area is on the north side of the Ocean Parkway and
is best reached by parking in the small parking lot just west of Field 6 and
heading north under the underpass and then making a quick right into the picnic
area. The bird favored the shrub barrier on the north side of the picnic area
and appeared to be feeding on small crickets! The small parking lot is closed
during the week so it is best to park at the west end of the Field 6 parking
lot and proceed as outlined.

Also seen this morning was an Orange-crowned Warbler at the West End/Jones
Beach turnaround, later relocated along the shrub line at the westernmost
entrance to West End 2. While heading back east in the early afternoon I
observed a Blue-headed Vireo feeding in the median of the Ocean Parkway just
east of the entrance to Cedar Overlook Beach.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Friday, Dec. 4

2009-12-06 Thread Shawn Matthew Billerman
Hi all,

I received an email this morning from Chris Feeney who was birding New
Jersey and Long Island this past week. He wanted me to post that he found
the PINK-FOOTED GOOSE at Sunken Meadow State Park on Friday, December 4.
Chris saw the bird about 2:30 pm in the field to the left of the main
admin building.

Good luck to all those who try for the bird. Hopefully it will stick
around for the Christmas counts.

Good birding,
Shawn Billerman
