Re: [nysbirds-l] Troupial at Roslyn NY...

2011-11-28 Thread Felipe Pimentel
Yes, this is a male Troupial and it seems to be an adult specimen. I have seen
both the male and the female Troupial in Puerto Rico. As John said, in some
South American countries the bird is kept in cages and possibly this specimen
is an escapee. This is a big rarity in this area.

Yes, this is a Troupial (Icterus icterus). It is the national bird of
Venezuela and is (as stated by Steve Hilty in his "Birds of Venezuela" - 2nd

Oriole like looking bird that was found by Mary Normandia at Gerry Pond Park

[nysbirds-l] Ross' Goose persisting at the driving range as of Monday 9AM Flatbush Ave, BKLYN

2011-11-28 Thread Richard Fleming
At eight this morning (Monday 11/28) I arrived at the Marine Park Golf
Course driving range, having failed to look there for the Ross' Goose on
Saturday when I spent all my time on the airfield. I found nothing but
several thousand golf balls and a couple of guys wandering around raking
them up. Despondent, and certain that I was doomed never to see this
particular goose, I made a complete but fruitless circuit through Floyd
Bennett field.

I am thankful that at nine am I went back across the road for just one last
look at the driving range, because the Ross' goose was by then there,
strolling gently out of the way of the golf-ball recovery tractors and
munching grass. There was not a Canada goose to be seen, just the Ross',
very much alone.

[nysbirds-l] FWD: White-winged Dove in Brooklyn

2011-11-28 Thread Andrew Farnsworth
Hi all,
I forward information gleaned while reviewing recent eBird
submissions: a WHITE-WINGED DOVE has put in two appearances (so far) in a
backyard in Brooklyn; Avi Lewis found the bird in the block bounded by
Avenues V and W, Bedford Avenue, and East 26th Street in the Sheepshead Bay
area of Brooklyn.

The bird was seen briefly yesterday (27 NOV) and seen briefly this morning
(28 NOV), both times in a flock of Mourning Doves.

IMPORTANT: because of the configuration of houses and yards in the block,
there is NO outside access to or from the yard, so searching nearby parks
and then surrounding areas like Marine Park or Plumb Beach might be a good
bet.

I will post additional information if I receive any news.

Best,
Andrew

[nysbirds-l] Inaugural LI Rarity Roundup

2011-11-28 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Patricia Lindsay, Holly Wilson, and I participated in this year's exploratory
trial of a rare bird roundup on eastern Long Island.

We didn't find anything really rare, but we found a good variety of CBC-quality
species in our Southampton territory:

In the coastal scrub adjacent to the Mecox Bay inlet:

1 Marsh Wren
1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet
1 Orange-crowned Warbler
1 Western Palm Warbler
1 Pine Warbler
2 Yellow-breasted Chats

At Agawam Pond:

1 Richardson's Goose

Elsewhere we had a Yellow-bellied Sapasucker and 3 Gray Catbirds (our only ones
all day!) near the Mecox Dairy, 4 male Eastern Towhees (our only ones all day!)
along Noyac Path, and robust numbers of Northern Shovelers (6 at Shorts Pond &
47 at Old Towne Pond).

Some photos can be seen at:

https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/LIRoundup2011

This interesting exercise was inspired by Doug Gochfeld, and for Patricia and
me also recalled the 16 year-old tradition of intensive CBC-style counts during
mid-November on nearby Block Island. It's a reminder that rare birds are
actually rare, and that common birds (like catbirds and towhees) do some
interesting things between November and December. I expect party totals for
catbird and towhee on the Sagaponack CBC will greatly exceed our tallies
yesterday!

[nysbirds-l] Troupial at Roslyn NY...

2011-11-28 Thread Andrew Baksh
Late this afternoon, I received a call from Erik Miller about a mystery
Oriole like looking bird that was found by Mary Normandia at Gerry Pond
Park in Roslyn NY. I got out to the area and took some documentation shots
for review. Erik later called and left a message indicating that he had
identified the bird as a Troupial (see the Birds of the West Indies) for
reference. I think Erik's ID is spot on. Here is a link to a few photos
posted on my
blog.http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2011/11/troupial-shows-up-in-roslyn-ny.html

2011-11-28 Thread John J. Collins
Yes, this is a Troupial (Icterus icterus). It is the national bird of
Venezuela and is (as stated by Steve Hilty in his Birds of Venezuela - 2nd
edition) a commonly kept cage bird prized for its beauty and rich song.
