[nysbirds-l] wetland birds
There were about 50 or so shorebirds present along the back edge of the pond along Biddlecum Rd and Rt 264 in Schroeppel, Oswego County on Saturday afternoon. The list in order of abundance (most to least): Least Sandpiper - 20-25 Lesser Yellowlegs - 8 Killdeer - 6 Greater Yellowlegs - 5 Spotted Sandpiper - 3 Solitary Sandpiper - 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper - 1 Wilson's Snipe - 1 There were also a few MARSH WRENS singing and the lone SNOW GOOSE was feeding in the field with a few Canada Geese before wandering down to the water's edge for a drink. The 2 GREAT EGRETS that Wayne Fidler reported on Tuesday were still at the wetland along Rt 6 in Volney. I spent about an hour there leading up to dusk and found much activity. There were at least 20 Great Blue Herons feeding throughout the wetland, and I saw anywhere from 6 to 8 GREEN HERONS as well. I watched an AMERICAN BITTERN fly in and disappear in the reeds and saw what was probably the same bird fly from the west to east across the road about a half hour later. I also heard a VIRGINIA RAIL grunt and a COMMON GALLINULE laugh from hidden locations. For some reason, I was surprised to see a CASPIAN TERN fly over the marsh and take a quick look downward before continuing on towards Lake Ontario. The only shorebirds that I saw here were a single SPOTTED SANDPIPER and 3 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS. [nysbirds-l] Whimbrels at Cedar Beach, Southold
Yesterday Derek Rogers posted his sightings of at least six Whimbrels at Cedar Beach County Park, Southold. This post caught my attention, as my wife and I also saw a group of least six Whimbrels at the same place last April, behaving as Rogers described. It seems Cedar Beach is a stopping-off point for migrating Whimbrels, in both directions. Maybe they were even the same individuals.Bill SingerEast Marion, NY -- NYSbirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach
Jones Beach West End. 11 Aug Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) went looking for the LARK SPARROW this morning arriving to an empty West End #2 lot and no sparrow. As we scanned, a small bird flew in from the east landing about 30 yard away. YES!. We drove over to the Coast Guard Station. Few shore birds, but a nice mix of the usual suspects. What was unusual was a CLAPPER RAIL and 6 young on the island, feeding along the far edge before moving into the vegetation. Moving to the Lido Beach Passive Nature Area, we walked out to the platform at the channel edge and looked directly across to the bay island where an adult LITTLE BLUE HERON was feeding in the high grass. Just as I was dropped off at home, we were summoned back to Jones Beach. The 2 BROWN PELICANS were resting on the sand bar all the way across the inlet, some 0.55 miles away (distance curtsey of Google Earth) . Viewing at that distance requires a good scope and a really large bird; fortunately, we had both.
