[nysbirds-l] February 1st Pelagic out of Freeport, Long Island

2014-01-13 Thread Sean Sime
Just a reminder, See Life Paulagics is running a full day pelagic on Saturday,
February 1st out of Freeport, Long Island.

Details can be found on the Paulagics website here:

http://www.paulagics.com/site/index.php

As many of you have noticed, the past few weeks on Long Island have seen a
steady increase in white-winged gulls, Black-headed Gulls, Razorbills and
some other uncommon goodies (Black Guillemot and Pacific Loon).
Common Murre and Dovekie have been reliable on trips this time of year and
I would like to remind everyone that NY State's first Western Gull was
on a February
2nd trip out of Freeport.
As someone who follows trip results from neighboring states I can say whole
heartedly that NY is overdue for something wonderful.

Let's make it happen! Call or email to sign up.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Snowy owl - bayside

2014-01-13 Thread Steve Walter
I was sent a picture by Ed Mertz of a Snowy Owl at Fort Totten today --
sitting in a tree of all things. This is at the other end of Little Neck
Bay, just a couple of miles north of the site noted below. Maybe?

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon

2014-01-13 Thread John Doe
No luck today at Gilgo Beach searching for the Gyrfalcon. The easternmost
osprey platform had a feeding Peregrine Falcon upon returning after checking
neighboring areas the Peregrine moved to the westernmost Platform, but still no
Gyrfalcon. Good luck to all who go searching for this bird.

[nysbirds-l] Coney Island Creek Park, Brooklyn. Kings County

2014-01-13 Thread Sean Sime
A late afternoon check of Coney Island Creek and the adjacent shoreline
west to Norton Point yielded a few notable sightings.

1 Glaucous Gull (continuing bird. Spotted at roughly 3:15 flying in from
the ocean side and sitting down on the water halfway to the bridge)

1 Adult Iceland Gull. Spotted as I was leaving at roughly 4pm. It was
bathing near the sand spit closer to Kaiser Park. Before I could get closer
to photograph it all the gulls put up and the Iceland headed around the
point towards the ocean. This individual had a fair amount of black in the
wings).

2 Adult Gannets working Gravesend Bay

[nysbirds-l] Best place to see Snowy Owls today

2014-01-13 Thread LoraKim Joyner
Dear All,

I have been saving emails about snowy owls but as I am new to the area I
am writing this to hopefully help me distill recent sightings of this
species.

I have to drive down to JFK (from Westchester County) this Monday
afternoon at 2. On the way back I would like to stop at 1-2 places that
have been mentioned for seeing snowy owls. Which places do you suggest that
might more or less be on my route? I would also love to see some of the
other water birds that you all have been listing.

In thanks,

 LoraKim Joyner

Having seen some forwarded photos of the bird, I think it looks like a domestic
variety--large and heavy-bodied.

For those interested in seeing this bird, it is currently with a flock of
several hundred Canadas in the eastern most field on the south side of Daniel's

Sagaponack.
