[nysbirds-l] Paraphrasing Captain Ahab...I seek the white whale of a bird !
Spurred on by yesterday's intriguing post to this listserve, and just before heading out to roam the Riverhead/Northville road & field complex while trying for "The Immaculate Connection", I decided to check the computer one last time for a possible update on the "white-bird !. No on that, but yes on a bird (Pink-footed Goose) I've managed to miss at least a dozen times this winter...and only ~ a 5 minute drive away...thank you Mike Yuan & Bob Washburn ! Things started well as I left the condo property, finding 6 Turkey Vultures circling over the McGann-Mercy H.S. grounds, which is right across the street from us.. My next bit of good fortune was, upon arriving at the goose site, finding Seth Ausubel & Mary Normandia already there, with the Pink-footed in their scopes ! Seth then discovered a 2nd post re: the goose leaving this location earlier, and coming down ~ a mile up the road, due north. It was decided that I would check out that location and call back my findings. After awhile, I did find a Pink-footed Goose, but when I called, was told their bird had taken off, heading north & west. Seth & Mary then came up to my location, but by then, we could not re-locate my bird. Since I didn't see/know when this bird landed, the possibility of a 2nd Pink-footed became moot. A Mute Swan, out in this field, was quite an unusual sight - I can't remember when I've last seen this species (rather than a Tundra) in this type habitat. After Seth & Mary took off, a hunting, female N. Harrier put in an appearance. I also had a male N. Harrier cross Roanoke Ave n/o there, and at Iron Pier Beach, Jamesport, again saw the adult Iceland Gull, with the dark gray wing-tips. [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach/ Meadowbrook Parkway: Snowy Owl, ~100 unknown blackbirds - please help ID
Hi Everyone, I was at Massapequa Preserve around 2:30 but not much going on (only there 30 minutes) I drove to Jones Beach West End around 4pm - the Coast Guard Station marina had a female Bufflehead with 2 Horned Grebes as company, also saw 2 Long Tailed Ducks in the distance. Nothing going along the road or divider, but there was a Snowy Owl on top of one of the dunes. I drove North on Meadowbrook Parkway looking for the reported Rough Legged Hawk, but only found a juvenile Red Tailed Hawk. I saw about 100 blackbirds that for some reason I just can't ID - I'm guessing they're Boat Tailed Grackles? I posted pics on my blog - if anyone can help me ID them, I'd appreciate it. [nysbirds-l] Nassau county: Rough-legged Hawk by Meadowbrook Parkway
Hi all, At 2:00 pm as Rich Fried, Brian Padden and I were heading back to the city, we happened upon a Rough-legged Hawk flying near the road. It was hovering and soaring over a field. We didn't get to see it for an extended time as we could only make a quick pullover. Other highlights of the morning were a flock of 18 Purple Sandpipers on the jetty at Jones Beach West End, and a pair of Harlequin Ducks at Point Lookout. good birding, Anders Peltomaa Manhattan ‘Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.' – Martin Luther King, Jr. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Red Crossbill FAMILY outside our Long Lake house!
2/22/14 Long Lake (northern Hamilton Co.) Over hundreds of Amer. Goldfinches and a few Purple Finches, I suddenly heard the distinctive, loud call notes of Red Crossbills on our baby monitor (used to bring in outside sounds in winter)! I raced to see them - they were gritting in our driveway with several goldfinches. The most exciting part was observing a juvenile Red Crossbill gritting too! It was right next to a hovering adult male. The adult female had just been observed and she flew back up into a large white pine when the juvenile and male dropped down. So there was at least one juvenile with this pair. They stayed for about 10 minutes in a large white pine. I just sent off 3 recordings to Matt Young at Cornell. I recorded from a second floor window that was probably around 50 to 70 feet from the calling birds. Unfortunately, my scope was sitting inside the car near where the birds were gritting, so I couldn't get a photo of the juvenile. This observation really made my day!!! I have not yet observed any juvenile Red Crossbills in the Minerva area. [nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Peregrines
Observed pair of peregrines on the St. Paul's steeple, Court St./Congress St., two days this week. One of the birds unfortunately looks like it has a lame leg. Would appreciate if someone could disabuse me of this opinion. Re:[nysbirds-l] Pink Footed Goose, Riverhead
Took off with a small group of Canadas. We observed it landing in the field north of Reeves Drive and south of Sound Avenue, east of Roanoke. Geese are starting to congregate here but we haven't relocated the PFGO yet.
