Here is the page from the DEC on crow shooting.
Doesn't seem right, shooting crows, at any time of year.

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Schuylerville to Stillwater

2014-03-16 Thread scottvarney1968
Today's catch on the Upper Hudson from Schuylerville to Stillwater included
Redheads, Canvasbacks, FOY American Widgeon, Pintails, FOY Pied-billed Grebe,
FOY Turkey Vulture, FOY Wood Duck. Also saw a growing number of Ring-necked
Ducks, Common Goldeneyes, and Scaup. Perhaps best sight of the day were 2
Tundra Swans at Admirals Marina in Stillwater. Spring migrations are
officially under way in the lower Adirondack region of NY. Happy Birding!

The Rip Van Winkle Rod and Gun Club, Palenville, NY, has scheduled a "Crow
Down" for March 30 - 31. Their object is as they say: "Wanted Dead or Alive -

Their poster can be seen by checking their Facebook page.

By 3:30 it had moved north into the eastern lobe of the reservoir in the
Massapequa Preserve about 50 yards south of the bikepath bridge. Great looks
provided from the shoreline adjacent to Brady Park. A few ring-necked ducks anf
hooded mergansers on the water.  Also had a FOS osprey making a FOS dive on a
fish that will not live to see the Spring.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Wood. & other reds

2014-03-16 Thread Steve Walter
I hadn't heard reports of this bird in over four months and I wouldn't
usually think to chase such birds, but I did today. And it's still there -
namely the RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at Muttontown Preserve. This in an
immature, now sporting a fair amount of red on the head. To look for it,
take the trail southeastward from the nature center. Within site of the
nature center, there's a vernal pond on the right. Look in the trees
surrounding the pond, usually about two-thirds the way up toward the tops of
the trees. A picture can be seen at http://www.stevewalternature.com/ .

>From there, I hit some water spots on the north shore. A RED-NECKED GREBE
was at the end of the long (closed off) pier in Oyster Bay. A dozen Common
Mergansers and two Pintails were among the ducks on nearby Mill Pond, with
an Osprey flying over. St. John's Pond had a robust number of about 80
Ring-necked Ducks and a pair of Redheads. On the east side of Cold Spring
Harbor, there were two RED-NECKED GREBES, both at one time or another close
to the little fishing pier almost opposite the Harbor Mist restaurant. One
of these is in very nice plumage. I've been keeping tabs on the two that I
found on the Mill River for the opportunity to get breeding plumage
pictures. I'd been seeing what I assumed to be the same two weekly, although
upriver from the original spot. I only found one yesterday, but the bill
pattern suggested a new individual. So they seem to be still shuffling
around.

Back on Redheads, there was a cooperative pair fairly close to shore on
Baldwin's Milburn Pond, if you're looking for that. Yea, Redheads everywhere
now. In Queens, there were 36 on Baisley Pond last weekend and two continue
on Oakland Lake.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Hybrid Goose Question and Photos, Randall's Island

2014-03-16 Thread Steve Walter
Shai's sleuth work led to my post from two winters ago. If you were looking
for the picture, the current link is

http://www.stevewalternature.com/birds/geese.htm . Another link is Angus
Wilson's
http://www.oceanwanderers.com/OddBrant.html . The upshot of this is that the
Randall's Island bird is very likely the same one that's been seen
intermittently at Flushing Meadow - Corona Park in Queens since January
2003. The interaction of the hybrid with other Brant, as reported by Anya,
is consistent with what I've seen.

Cool-looking bird!

It or one like it seems to pop up around here about every three years or so,
at intervals just long enough that it's difficult to remember all the
details. I found this archived page and am sure I have some stuff about it

Hi all;

A hybrid goose has spent the winter with the brant flock on Randall's

goose was found. It appears very similar to a dark brant, but aside from the
obvious darker coloration, particularly on the flanks, and reduced black on
the neck, there is also reduced white uppertail coverts and subtly different
head and neck shape. Brant x Cackling goose has been suggested and seems
plausible to me, although I don't know if this combination has been ever
definitively recorded. A few pictures taken today are on my flickr page,
below. Also of interest, every time I have seen it this bird has kept to the
very edge of the brant flock- the other birds don't seem fond of it.

[nysbirds-l] C.P., NYC [grebe yes], 3/16

2014-03-16 Thread Thomas Fiore
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City - 16 March, 2014

An after-noon pass thru the park offered a chance to check the
reservoir again, and this time the Red-necked Grebe was seen, diving
quite regularly - and still doing so when last seen watched at about
2:45 by which time it had moved well towards the center (a little west
of the dike) & thus quite difficult to spot easily. I saw that it
appears to be same individual as previous days. (a chance of a newly-
arrived indiv. also struck me as I saw the cross-posted report A.P.
sent, and it seems reasonable - unlike most years - that this could
yet happen; there've now been 2 clearly-different Red-necked Grebes
this month in Central Park, 1 differently-plumaged individual at the
Hudson river off Manhattan, & at least 1 additionally seen out by
Randall's island well east of Manhattan island.

I spent a little time focusing on the gull gathering at the remaining
ice at the reservoir this afternoon but did not come up with anything
notable in gulls. Some of this morning's duck variety were still
present, but dispersed much more widely in the opening water. Also I
may have neglected to note that as many as 8 Hooded Mergansers had
been in the park today, with 6 at once on the res. plus a pair at the
meer early in the a.m. Lots of waterfowl certainly on the move all
over...

good birding,

Tom Fiore

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

Also, a lone Turkey Vulture heading north over Motor Parkway in Hauppauge,
yesterday.

Forwarding a positive report on the Red-necked Grebe.

Subject: [ebirdsnyc] Central park reservoir - red-necked grebe - yes
To: ebirds...@yahoogroups.com

The red-necked grebe was seen ~10.30 this morning. Southeast corner, by
pumphouse. Actively diving - you could almost set your clock by it. It was
spending ~30 s on the surface and then dived down for ~50-60 s.

The photos were taken yesterday, it's probably still there. The flock
sticks around the NE corner of the island.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Reservoir [Central Park, NYC] 3/16

2014-03-16 Thread Thomas Fiore
Sunday, 16 March, 2014 - Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

Agreeing with Anders on what was NOT seen this a.m. at the reservoir,
beginning at pre-sunrise thru 7:45am, NO red-necked grebe, no wigeon,
& no ring-necked duck, anywhere on any portion of the reservoir's
water or shores. Nor, at any other waterbody in the park... single
Ruddy Duck apparently new to this season (what season is this,
anyhow!) and over at the Lake, a Double-crested Cormorant was new to
me this year in the park. I did see 7 Wood Ducks, 5 at the south part
of the reservoir, plus a pair at the Lake. Good numbers of N.
Shovelers continue at the Lake, a few at the reservoir. At least one
Gadwall at reservoir, and multiples of Bufflehead; a modest & typical
ass't. of waterfowl & a few gulls coming on the Meer now that it like
other waterbodies is losing ice, gaining open water.

A look at the feeders after 8 a.m. was inconclusive for certain
species that had been around there and nearby (pine warbler, Baltimore
orioles) as I didn't linger long enough to see a lot. There & in a
few other areas of the Ramble were "red" Fox Sparrows, some singing
nicely. I eventually ran into just 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at the
Pinetum. The hordes of half-marathon runners & joggers convinced me
not to do all my usual routes although by about 10, that was pretty
much finished. One American Woodcock was inadvertently and
unintentionally flushed in the Ramble and went I-know-not-where.

Some of the earliest-blooming flowers have come up, with signs that
more will be as (if ever!) temp's stay above freezing for more than 1
day. Plenty of resident & a few of the overwintering birds have been
singing.

Good birding,

Waterfowl numbers are much lower today. I just finished a walk around the
reservoir: no sighting of the Red-necked Grebe, Ring-necked Duck or

some near the central South end which I couldn't cover as i was walking

[nysbirds-l] C.P., NYC [grebe yes], 3/16

2014-03-16 Thread Thomas Fiore
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City - 16 March, 2014

An after-noon pass thru the park offered a chance to check the
reservoir again, and this time the Red-necked Grebe was seen, diving
quite regularly - and still doing so when last seen watched at about
2:45 by which time it had moved well towards the center (a little west
of the dike) thus quite difficult to spot easily. I saw that it
appears to be same individual as previous days. (a chance of a newly-
arrived indiv. also struck me as I saw the cross-posted report A.P.
sent, and it seems reasonable - unlike most years - that this could
yet happen; there've now been 2 clearly-different Red-necked Grebes
this month in Central Park, 1 differently-plumaged individual at the
Hudson river off Manhattan, at least 1 additionally seen out by
Randall's island well east of Manhattan island.

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe on Tappen Beach

2014-03-16 Thread Avery Scott (SkyOfBirds)
I observed a Red-necked Grebe on Tappen Beach in Sea Cliff, NY today. It
was over on the other side near North Hempstead Beach Park, floating and
bobbing in front of the various boats and piers. Also observed a seal in
the water.

The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that our
treatment of them has no moral significance, is a positively outrageous
example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion in the only
guarantee of morality.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Hybrid Goose Question and Photos, Randall's Island

2014-03-16 Thread Steve Walter
Shai's sleuth work led to my post from two winters ago. If you were looking
for the picture, the current link is
http://www.stevewalternature.com/birds/geese.htm
http://www.stevewalternature.com/birds/geese.htm . Another link is Angus
Wilson's http://www.oceanwanderers.com/OddBrant.html
http://www.oceanwanderers.com/OddBrant.html .

It or one like it seems to pop up around here about every three years or so,
at intervals just long enough that it's difficult to remember all the
details. I found this archived page and am sure I have some stuff about it
in my files:

Hi all;

A hybrid goose has spent the winter with the brant flock on Randall's
Island, first noted (by me, at least) in January the same day the barnacle
goose was found.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Wood. other reds

2014-03-16 Thread redknot
By 3:30 it had moved north into the eastern lobe of the reservoir in the
Massapequa Preserve about 50 yards south of the bikepath bridge. Great looks
provided from the shoreline adjacent to Brady Park. A few ring-necked ducks anf
hooded mergansers on the water.  Also had a FOS osprey making a FOS dive on a
fish that will not live to see the Spring.
