[nysbirds-l] Willow Ptarmigan
Today, Scott Baldinger and I traveled to Point Peninsula, New York for the WILLOW PTARMIGAN. We had a great afternoon. [nysbirds-l] Addition to last post, which I inadvertently "sent"...before it's time !
*con't.* , except for one small, mixed group of birds we crossed paths with, consisting of 3 Pine Warblers (all in full breeding plumage) and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Not all in our original group (we had started out with 17 & 1/2 people, this # brought about by a grandma pushing a small child in a stroller) but lost a few along the way. We had fairly close and lengthy looks at these species, and once again, as with the feeder birds, really enjoyed these sightings Cheers, Bob -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC 4/26
(aww, no Ptarmigans even in the northernmost end of Central Park... ;-) ... what a great find - who has offered the original finder a dinner (at least) at the finest local restaurant of choice? You are not too likely to see this "all-white" species irrupt on any regular basis in NY state...! .. Saturday, 26 April, 2014 - Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City Despite not being any kind of "wave" or even a real "splash" of migration-seeming-sort-of-day, some holdovers, & maybe a new few were seen in the park, as well as a few additions from later in the day on Friday- a duo of Glossy Ibis seen in early evening over the Loch, reported by N. Sourgi, who also noted a White-eyed Vireo today in the Ramble's "oven" (that's just west of The Point); a Black-throated Green Warbler turned up in the north woods, 1st noted by a young birder, later seen & even heard singing slightly at the Loch's east end - accompanied by a modest flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers... but for most, the n. end was rather slow-going, and yet another nice sighting was a Northern Waterthrush - also spotted by a "n. end" regular & seen by at least several. A few species were lingering, or, new individuals came in & happened to be in some of the same areas, including Prairie Warblers, & Louisiana Waterthrushes (several), as well as Pine, Palm (in multiples), Black-and-white, and Myrtle/Yellow- rumped (not yet the "invasion" of them, which may be some days away yet) Warblers. Also a number of Blue-headed Vireos (and incidentally Warbling Vireos have arrived in a few NYC parks, on breeding territories), Hermit Thrush, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and modest numbers of Sparrows, most being White-throated but a smattering of some of the other regular migrants also. In 2009, Manhattan had a high temp. of 92 F. on this date... not quite there, this spring. [nysbirds-l] Fuch's Pond Prothonotary Warbler—YES
The PROTHONOTARY WARBLER at Fuch's Pond Preserve in Northport (Suffolk) put on a really nice show this afternoon, providing "crippling" views. At one point, as I sat on a tree root on the edge of the pond, the bird worked it's way along the shoreline toward me until it was literally within 3 feet of the toes of my boots! Too close to focus on with binoculars or fit within my camera's frame. Here's a link to some of the photos I obtained, the first two being full frame (uncropped): https://www.flickr.com/photos/jgluth_brb/sets/72157644334231112/ Also seen in the vicinity were numerous Yellow-rumped Warblers, a few Palm Warblers, 2 great Egrets, a Green Heron and a Wood Duck. Sadly, no Louisiana Waterthrush. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Dune Rd. (Westhampton to Hampton Bays) and the Quogue Wildlife Refuge, Quogue
I decided to try Dune Rd. for new arrivals, before leading a bird walk at 1:15 PM at the refuge, where the QWR & Eastern Long Island Audubon Society were co-hosting an Earth Day Celebration, which despite the rain, was well attended. I started on Dune Rd. at the Beach La. Bridge, and went as far east as the Ponquogue Bridge. The # of species was low, but did manage to see an even dozen Great Egrets, a single Snowy Egret, in addition to a lone Willet...with the latter two being FOS birds. The walk started a bit late, but as we assembled near the front of the Nature Center (where the feeders are) we were entertained by chickadees, titmice, downies, cardinals, red-wings, doves, canadas, mallards, towhees and white-throats...to the delight of all the kids, their parents and/or grandparents, plus the adults who were non-birders. Away from the feeders, as we walked around the "Ice Pond" (just short of a mile) the birding was also quit -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Re:[nysbirds-l] Muttontown Preserve Red-headed Woodpecker
Correction about Muttontown Red-headed Woodpecker: this bird was not a new discovery, it was the same bird that has been around and is still being seen behind the Nature Center. Another birder I bumped into luckily had it so we watched it together for around 15 minutes. [nysbirds-l] Muttontown Preserve Red-headed Woodpecker
I visited Muttontown Preserve today. I found a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER just behind the Nature center. I watched it for about 15 minutes, working the trees and sometimes flying. It also called a bit. I also made a stop at Tappen Beach. Both OSPREYS were on their nest, and both PEREGRINE FALCONS were near theirs; one had a pigeon and was devouring it. Thirty-nine BRANT were down near the water. Otherwise, that was it. the Red-head was definitely the best find. -- *Yours, * * Avery* "The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance, is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. [nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawk, Hauppauge
Just saw a Common Nighthawk over my yard in Hauppauge, in very direct straight flight, heading due east, maybe 100 or 150 feet off the ground. Very early. Not a kestrel/merlin. No sightings north of NC on the ebird map. Glenn Quinn Hauppauge, NY --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast!
