[nysbirds-l] COGD continues at West End Jones Beach LI

2014-11-22 Thread Andrew Baksh
For those of you planning your weekend birding with a Common Ground-Dove in
mind.

You will be pleased to know that it continues this AM. Reported by Curt
McDermott, who indicated the bird was in the West End II parking lot near
the curb, south of the rest rooms before it was flushed.

The bird headed out somewhere in the dune area. Given its recent pattern of
movement, it will probably make its way back to the parking lot.

Good luck to those trying for it and many thanks to Curt for the update.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Floyd Cassin's yes

2014-11-22 Thread Andrew Baksh
Quick update on the Cassin's. The bird flew out of the community gardens
heading east in the direction of the Park Police building, near the grove
of Pines.

Isaac Grant tracked it and saw a Sharp-shinned Hawk making a failed run at
it. This caused the bird to head over the Pines going north towards the
open field area where several of us are spread out currently searching.

Many thanks to Klemens Gasser for the refind and to Rob Jett and all others
who ensured the timely reports/updates.

Keep your fingers crossed for a positive update!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Floyd Cassin's yes --- location info

2014-11-22 Thread Arie Gilbert

For a map showing the location of the community garden and also the
picnic area behind it,

see http://tinyurl.com/yf5cbtf

there is minimal walking involved.

maps for other popular locations  are on the Queens County Bird
Club's website here:   http://www.qcbirdclub.org/birding-site-maps

Today the bird seemed to favor the short stakes used to support the
newly planted trees in the 'picnic area'; though it sometimes flew
off in various directions for a short while.

[nysbirds-l] Orleans and Genesee Counties, Saturday - Snowy Owl, White-fronted Geese, Longspurs

2014-11-22 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Celeste Morien, Sue Barth, Betsy Potter, and I met at Celeste's for a day of
birding today. No Redpolls at her feeder today (they were seen yesterday),
so we settled for six PINE SISKINS. Making our way to the Batavia WWTP we
had lots of Juncos and Tree Sparrows on the road shoulders. We also had two
FOX SPARROWS as well as a LAPLAND LONGSPUR with HORNED LARKS. At the
Batavia WWTP, we had 100 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 46 RUDDY DUCKS, 2 RING-NECKD
DUCKS, and 64 MALLARDS, most of which were in the aerated ponds that are
near the administration building. Other birds seen on other ponds in small
openings in the ice were single HOODED and COMMON MERGANSERS, two
BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 12 TUNDRA SWANS, and an AMERICAN PIPIT. We also had an
adult BALD EAGLE fly over. No sign of the Eared Grebes. We found the huge
flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS along the south side of the plant property, roughly
500 birds, and had good long studies of them as they teed up in bare
deciduous trees. We could not come up with the recently reported Bohemian
Waxwings - we are pretty sure they just were not there. We then tried the
Batavia Airport where three Snowy Owls have been seen in recent weeks but
found none.

Along Allis Road in the Town of Shelby, Orleans County, we had three LAPLAND
LONGSPURS with 14 HORNED LARKS. Along nearby Martin Road we found a very
white adult male SNOWY OWL (east of Bigford Rd), making up for missing it at
Batavia. Also along Martin Road, near East Shelby Road, we had a flock of
several hundred MALLARDS, with a few BLACK DUCKS, landing in distant fields
and a half frozen pond. Nearby was a flock of 250 SNOW BUNTINGS.

After leaving Celeste's house, Sue found two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE
with a huge flock of CANADA GEESE along Fletcher Chapel Road. We were
almost right behind her and also got to see these birds. However, they flew
before Celeste could get there. They appeared to be headed to Ring-necked
Marsh at Iroquois NWR, possibly to roost for the night. This would be a
good place to look for them in upcoming days.

Good birding!

Willie

[nysbirds-l] Dead Moose in Little Tupper Lake/Gray Jays/Black-backed Woodpeckers/Ruffed Grouse

2014-11-22 Thread Joan Collins
11/22/14 Long Lake (Hamilton Co.)

Today at Little Tupper Lake, I encountered a disturbing sight. A Moose did
not make it across the lake overnight. The lake was open water just a few
days ago and quickly froze from the cold snap - but it wouldn't be thick
enough to hold such a heavy animal yet. About 10 Common Ravens and an adult
Bald Eagle were feeding on the carcass (it appears to be the Moose's back
sticking out of the ice). It is located near the southern shore across from
the Round Pond outlet bridge. The owners of the land near this spot have
recently photographed two Moose on their trail cameras. I think it is
likely that it will still be visible tomorrow, but with the warm-up I am
told that the animal will sink when the water opens back up. Several people
driving by had noticed the animal out on the ice and stopped to ask me what
it was when they saw my scope. I posted 11 photos to my Facebook page at
https://www.facebook.com/AdirondackAvian . It was difficult to photograph
and I had to use my scope and iPhone attachment, both zoomed all the way in.

As usual, I was mesmerized by the Common Raven activity at the Moose
carcass. They stood up to the Bald Eagle and it left - I didn't see it
again! Their interactions were fascinating. Several times, they flew about
20 to 30 feet from the carcass to snow-bathe. They rolled in the snow, so
they were often on their backs with their feet sticking up!

At Sabattis Bog, I visited with my two Gray Jay friends! A female
Black-backed Woodpecker flew in and tried to bother the Gray Jays. I
followed the woodpecker down the road and the Gray Jays followed. They
chased the woodpecker. Usually, it is the other way around and the
Black-backed Woodpeckers chase the Gray Jays. I posted photos of both
species to my Facebook page.

On my drive out of Sabattis Circle Road, I found a Ruffed Grouse feeding
high up in a birch tree.

11/18/14 Long Lake

A Fox Sparrow was foraging along Sabattis Circle Road with two nearby
Dark-eyed Juncos. (I posted a photos of the bird on Facebook.)

11/17/14 Long Lake

A Common Loon was observed on Little Tupper Lake. (I hope it left before
the sudden icing.) Two Gray Jays were observed at Sabattis Bog.

11/16/14 Long Lake

Hooded Mergansers were observed on the Round Pond outlet along Sabattis
Circle Road. Two Gray Jays were observed at Sabattis Bog. A lone Pine
Siskin showed up at our feeders and stayed for a few days.

11/15/14 Long Lake

Along Sabattis Circle Road including the bog:

American Black Ducks

Hooded Mergansers

Black-backed Woodpecker - 2 (male and female)

Gray Jay - 2

Evening Grosbeak - at least two heard flying over
