[nysbirds-l] FW: Jones Beach Nassua Co activity

2015-01-31 Thread pjlindsay

The extra heavy police presence today at West End Jones Beach was due to
the (very belatedly, I hear) taking down of last of  the Holiday
Spectacular light show structures. A bad choice of days for them, in the
gusty freezing winds, but if all goes well maybe they will be cleared
out by tomorrow. West End is usually birder friendly as long as we
patrons behave within expected norms.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Lapland Longspur

2015-01-31 Thread Ardith Bondi
I have encountered this same type of absurd aggressive behavior from
them in the same area, but it was also a few years ago. I've thought it
might be a particular superior officer who encourages this harassment.

On another occasion, in freezing weather, kids were doing wheelies in
their cars in the WEII parking lot, and the cops were nowhere to be
found. Go figure.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Lapland Longspur

2015-01-31 Thread Andrew Baksh
To Michael's observation re: Park Police.

I personally did not have any encounters but many birders did today.

I have never seen the Park Police this aggressive as I have seen them today
at West End Jones Beach. Some of the reasons some birders were stopped for
bordered on ludicrous.

For example, one car was pulled over and asked why they crossed the lines
in the West End II parking lot. Say what!?!

I hope this is not some new trend developing here because it will make
birding from vehicles very difficult. Imagine trying to study Gulls in the
West End II parking lot and having to worry about crossing over lines.

RE:[nysbirds-l] NNYBirds: Red Crossbills

2015-01-31 Thread Joan Collins
Alan/Larry/All,

Based on the behaviors that I've been observing, it appears that the Red
Crossbills are already nesting. Last winter, when we had huge numbers of
Red Crossbills nesting from Long Lake to Minerva, I began to see juveniles
by the 3rd week of February and continued to see them into April. So keep
an eye out for juvenile Red Crossbills this coming month!

Redpoll numbers are quickly escalating at our Long Lake feeders too! Pine
Siskin numbers are increasing also.

Will do. Thanks Larry. I heard at least one Red Crossbill singing so
hopefully they will stick around and nest in the area.

Thanks. Let me know if you find crossbills consistently feeding in one spot
as I'd like to get some images and recordings. Siskin now seems to be
regular with the 200+ redpolls at my feeders.
