[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Lark Sparrow

2015-10-19 Thread Doug Gochfeld
To add to the recent glut of Lark Sparrows, there was one at Six Diamonds
ballfields in Brooklyn this morning. The Lark Sparrow was along the fences
of the ballfield just south of the entrance at the dead end of Bay 53rd St.
just outside the Home Depot parking lot. At the northern corner of the
park, where it comes together with Calvert Vaux, there were singles of
Orange-crowned Warbler, and Lincoln's Sparrow. There was also a rich brown
*passerina* bunting with some buffy on the underparts, that unfortunately
did not cooperate for good looks or photos.

This is just across the small creek (to the east of) from Calvert Vaux (nee
Dreier Offerman) Park, near Coney Island.

At Coney Island Creek Park a bit earlier in the morning, the only thing
diurnally migrating in somewhat impressive numbers were Kinglets (mostly
Ruby-crowned), which was not tremendously surprising given the favorable
and *light* winds. There were also quite a few Brown Creepers around,
including at least one migrating west through the dunes.
There were also 4 House Wrens between the two locations, which is a decent
number for such a small area on this date.

eBird lists for both locations here (photos to be embedded some time this
evening):

[nysbirds-l] Probable Townsend's Solitare at Thatcher State Park- Albany Co.

2015-10-19 Thread Richard Guthrie
Two birders hiking the "Indian Ladder Trail" at Thatcher State Park west of
Albany, NY yesterday, reported (and photographed) a bird they later
identified as a TOWNSEND'S SOLITARE.

In an email from one of the observers, he states: "The location, as I
recall, was just before an S-curve in the trail
that leads you to an interpretive sign about the park dedication and rock
with a dedicatory plaque on it".

I understand they are in the process of digitizing the photos that they
took and will send them on when ready.

These are reliable observers who, although having been unfamiliar with this
western species, researched their bird guides before making their
identification.

More info will follow as it becomes available.

Re: [nysbirds-l] 19 Oct: Central Pk Sora continues

2015-10-19 Thread Ardith Bondi
I spoke with Rita McMahon at Wild Bird Fund yesterday. She did not
release this bird. We considered capturing it because of the injured
wing. The bird is feeding well, and the question then is whether trying
to capture it will stress it more than leaving it there. If it looks
like it is struggling, which it did not appear to be yesterday, someone
will go up from WBF to try to retrieve it for rehabilitation. Since
there are so many eyes on it, any problems should be recognized pretty
quickly.

[cayugabirds-l] Lake effect migration

2015-10-19 Thread Mickey Scilingo
Despite Sunday's lake effect snow (or perhaps because of it...), migration activity was pretty high at my house on Sunday morning.  I woke up to 2 inches of snow on the ground, with steady snow falling until mid-morning, when the snow band moved north.  By noon, most of the snow on the ground had melted away, but the snow band stayed just to the north of my yard, peppering me with random snow showers for the rest of the day, but with no additional accumulation.I was outside by 7 AM to fill my feeders, and it was immediately evident that the falling snow would not impede the movement of birds headed south.  AMERICAN ROBINS made a significant movement yesterday.  They were coming through in multiple waves exactly like the Blue Jays were a few weeks ago.  In the 3 1/2 hours that I spent outside yesterday morning, I was able to count 1590 of them as they passed overhead.  I saw more than I was able to count, and I am sure that many more passed than I saw.  BLUE JAYS were also still moving through, but in much smaller numbers.  I counted 31 Jays migrating yesterday.  Also notable were 55 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, a flock of 47 BRANT, 3 flocks of CANADA GEESE totaling 41 birds, 7 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS,  1 migrating NORTHERN FLICKER, and 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS.  There were flocks of blackbirds flying overhead throughout the day, and I heard at least 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS in the mix.  I also had flyover groups of PINE SISKINS numbering 7,8,7 and 2 - but I could not be sure if I was seeing the same birds or not. After seeing a circling RED-TAILED HAWK through my kitchen window, I was back outside at 1:30 for the ensuing raptor show.  In the next hour and a half, I saw 10 other RED-TAILED HAWKS, 32 TURKEY VULTURES, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, an adult BALD EAGLE, and 1 AMERICAN KESTREL.  There was one bird that I thought may have been a Rough-legged Hawk, but it did not stay in my binocular field long enough for me to confirm its ID.  Another flock of 75 BRANT and a pair of COMMON RAVENS really giving it to one poor Turkey Vulture were other highlights of the afternoon. On the local scene, 2 CHIPPING SPARROWS spent some time at my feeders in the afternoon,  The HERMIT THRUSH that I saw feeding in my cherry trees on Saturday was still present yesterday, but the GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH that was feeding with him the previous day was not.   Mickey ScilingoConstantia, Oswego Countymickey.scili...@gte.net315-679-6299

If it's injured, should some one contact a rehabber?

Re: [nysbirds-l] 19 Oct: Central Pk Sora continues

2015-10-19 Thread Ardith Bondi
I spoke with Rita McMahon at Wild Bird Fund yesterday. She did not
release this bird. We considered capturing it because of the injured
wing. The bird is feeding well, and the question then is whether trying
to capture it will stress it more than leaving it there. If it looks
like it is struggling, which it did not appear to be yesterday, someone
will go up from WBF to try to retrieve it for rehabilitation. Since
there are so many eyes on it, any problems should be recognized pretty
quickly.
