[nysbirds-l] Random sightings from Out East

2015-11-30 Thread Anthony Collerton
Birded the East End pretty hard all weekend with a couple of visiting
birders from Madeira, Portugal. Nothing super noteworthy but slight signs
of the change of season.

Lots of Snow Buntings moving - had 80+ at Napeague, 60+ at Cupsogue, and
one at Teddy Roosevelt CP in Montauk. Also a few American Pipits and lots
of Horned Larks coming through.

Worked hard on Sparrows, got Seaside and Saltmarsh plus a Red Fox Sparrow
at Cupsogue. American Tree is is and there are lots of Fields still
around. A few White-crowned scattered around. Biggest surprise was a
group of 3 Nelson's Sparrows on Dune Road. I've had them here in late Fall
before but always surprised to see them anywhere Out East.

Montauk was quiet all weekend, just a few Kittiwakes to liven things up but
sea duck numbers are slowly building up. Good seals though (Gray and
Harbor) and a few Inshore Bottlenosed Dolphins slaughtering herring under a
bombardment of Northern Gannets (very Blue Planet).

Pretty much all the expected waterfowl are back. Did not really go goosing
near Riverhead but had Greater White-fronted Goose in Bridgehampton and 4
Tundra Swans in East Hampton. Seatuck Creek probably has the best
selection, including Canvasbacks and Redheads (my only remaining reliable
spot for Canvasbacks these days). Also a Eurasian Wigeon there and a
couple of Bald Eagles.

Did a lot of owling but nothing except a lot of Eastern Screech and Great
Horned. Lots of half-hardys still around but only Myrtle and Pine on the
warbler front.

108 species overall. But Winter is Coming so things should look up soon.

[nysbirds-l] Long Island Sound (LIS) Bird Count (during Dec 1st thru Jan 3rd).

2015-11-30 Thread Thomas Robben
HELP PLEASE! SEARCHING FOR SEABIRDS THROUGHOUT LONG ISLAND SOUND:

COA is organizing a month-long December count (12/1 thru 1/3) of seabirds
(defined broadly, including waterfowl, shorebirds and other birds) seen on
Long Island Sound (LIS). If you would like to join this 3-year project and
contribute one or more LIS observations, please take a look at the
following website and the instructions:

LISBirdCount.wordpress.com
https://lisbirdcount.wordpress.com/

Razorbills (and other alcids) are among the species we are searching for,
because of their very abnormal migrations during the last several winters.
Please help us with this by reporting on any birds seen anywhere in Long
Island Sound, in both NY *and* CT waters, anytime during December, through
Jan 3rd. This is a joint NY and CT project, with some inputs from RI at
the eastern extreme of LIS. The 3-year results will be published next
Spring.

Thanks very much!

[nysbirds-l] ADMIN: eList Issues

2015-11-30 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
Good afternoon,

As many of you are aware, NYSbirds-L has been experiencing deliverability
issues for the past few days. Unfortunately, Cornell operations were closed for
the long holiday weekend and they have only now been able to start addressing
this issue which has also been affecting quite a number of other Cornell-based
eLists. Due to the usage and scope of NYSbirds-L, they will attempt to elevate
the issue affecting NYSbirds-L toward a faster resolution.

Thank you all for your patience!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

[nysbirds-l] Painted Bunting -Prospect Park - Brooklyn

2015-11-30 Thread Rob Bate
The Painted Bunting continues in and around the green roof at the Lefrak
Center in Prospect Park. This is the new complex housing the skating
rinks. The best entrance is either at Lincoln Road or at the corner of
Parkside and Ocean Avenues, both stops on the Q train if you're using mass
transit.

There were more than 30 birders at one time angling for a good view of this
remarkable bird and it can get crowded up there so please stay on the paths
as the plantings up on the green roof are fragile. There are plenty of
paths so the bird will always be visible from one path or another without
having to cross into any planted areas.

The Bunting has been working a fairly consistent area running north-south
between the bridle path and the green roof summit.

For some reason I am able to post to this list serve when others are not so
don't get discouraged if you haven't heard about this bird for a while.

Bird continues on top of Lefrak Center. It seems to be feeding with a large
