[nysbirds-l] Southern Nassau CBC Saturday Jan 2, 2016

2015-12-16 Thread pjlindsay
Greetings, everyone!

The Southern Nassau County Christmas Bird Count will be held this season
on Saturday, January 2nd and we look forward to another successful
count. Last year we recorded 132 species, slightly above average for
this count, despite a rainy afternoon.

The compilation dinner, always a special occasion, will be at our
traditional spot--Otto's Sea Grill--located at 271 Woodcleft Avenue in
Freeport, along the Miracle Mile and very near the Captain Lou boatslips
where the SeeLife Paulagics trips used to leave from.

The cost for dinner is the same as last year, $28 per person (including
tax and gratuity). The manager, Derek, remembers fondly that he worked
these "birdwatcher" parties back in the 80s, and has agreed to hold the
price at least for this year, despite the heavy increase in insurance
costs after the storms of recent years.

Dinner includes choice of soup or salad, entree choices of Sliced Skirt
Steak with Burgundy Mushroom Sauce, Rigatoni ala Vodka, Stuffed Basa
(like flounder) in Lemon Butter Sauce, and of course, Stuffed Cornish
Hen. A choice of desserts and coffee/tea is also included.  Please bring
cash for dinner.

If you have a relatively set routine on this count, please contact your
party leader to arrange meeting times and coverage duties (see below).
If you are new to the count or unsure where to go, please contact Pat or
Shai.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

[nysbirds-l] Swainson's Hawk on Staten Island -Yes

2015-12-16 Thread Isaac Grant
The bird has showed itself multiple times this afternoon. Came very close once.
Bird is being seen from the back of the Sanitation Lot that is directly across
the street from Dick's Sporting Goods on Richmond Avenue. Best to park by
Dick's or just north of here in the FedEx parking lot and walk a couple
minutes south on Richmond Avenue. The sanitation workers have been very
gracious and we even showed the bird to some. But as per the office please stay
out of the lot and in the back behind the orange plows.

[nysbirds-l] Swainson's Hawk

2015-12-16 Thread Cotingas
16 December
12:09 P M
East Mound of the restored landfill just south of the intersection of
Richmond Hill Road and Richmond Avenue - NYC Sanitation Department Depot.

The previously reported Swainson's Hawk found by Dick Veit yesterday,
reappeared at 12:09 P M and soared over the grassy hillside of the east mound
before retreating back into the reclaimed landfill. It was observed
yesterday in the morning and afternoon flying over the mound.

The best place to park is in the Fed Ex parking lot at Richmond Hill
Road. Do not drive into the Sanitation Department property and park there.
There are large barricades and one can view the east mound and pond from
here.

[nysbirds-l] Swainson's Hawk seen again

2015-12-16 Thread isaac grant
After not showing all morning inside the landfill, I just got word from
Howie Fischer that he had the bird exactly where I saw it yesterday across
the street from Dick's Sporting Goods on Richmond Avenue. Seen from the
back of the Sanitation lot. We are not supposed to be there so be
respectful please if you go. I went and told the office that this hawk was
being seen and that people may come. I stood off of the lot in the back on
the sand and behind the orange plows so to be completely out of sight and
out of the way.

[nysbirds-l] Lark sparrow

2015-12-16 Thread Larry Trachtenberg
I have reliable word that lark sparrow has been seen and photographed this a.m.
at Croton Point (Count week for the Northern Westchester/Peekskill count).
The question now is what bird will Doug G come up with for the Putnam Count on
January 2 that will, if I may quote him, make people “lose their sh** over.”

The Prospect Park Painted Bunting has made it to Brooklyn's CBC count period.
It is currently in one of its favored locations at the extreme northeast corner
of the appropriate habitat at the LeFrak center green roof.
