[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond 5/25/2014

2014-05-26 Thread Avery Scott (SkyOfBirds)
Sorry for the late report, but I had some fairly good birding at Alley Pond
yesterday. The highlights of the Upper woodlands area was a GREAT-CRESTED
FLYCATCHER, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.

Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC) was a bit more productive, with
really numerous YELLOW WARBLERS around every twenty feet. More BALTIMORE
ORIOLES where very ubiquitous and there was also a GREAT EGRET and
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, plus plentiful BARN and TREE SWALLOWS and a lone
male AMERICAN REDSTART.

[nysbirds-l] A very brief spring migration stop

2014-05-02 Thread Avery Scott (SkyOfBirds)
I was able to do some brief birding today at Clark Botanic Garden, only a
few minutes from my house. Present there was a bright male PINE WARBLER,
more than one actually, singing plenty and quite loudly. Also there were
1-2 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS. And of course the usual suspects, NORTHERN
CARDINAL, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, COMMON GRACKLE, HOUSE FINCH, MOURNING DOVE
on nest, and what appeared to be a CAROLINA WREN on a nest box in which
they have raised young for several years.

[nysbirds-l] Tappen Beach, Sea Cliff

2014-04-12 Thread Avery Scott (SkyOfBirds)
Tappen Beach today had at least 2 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, one of which
allowed me to photograph him while he scarfed down a giant fish. Two
OSPREYS were present, sitting on their nest on a cell tower. The RED-NECKED
GREBE that has been hanging around was still there, this time diving just
behind Duffy's Bait and Tackle. Also behind the bait and tackle shop was my
FOS (and lifer!) SNOWY EGRET, in full breeding plumage. There was a GREAT
EGRET at Scudder's Pond and several BUFFLEHEAD in the middle of the inlet.

[nysbirds-l] Roslyn Birds

2014-02-15 Thread Avery Scott (SkyOfBirds)
I decided to check some of my favorite Roslyn Hotspots today. Gerry Park
had six *Gadwalls, *eighty *Mallards*, including an albino female,
twenty-six *Canada Geese*, and the resident pair of *Mute Swans.* Two *American
Coots were also present.* On the ice, there sat 100 *Ring-billed
Gulls, *accompanied
by 18 *Herring Gulls* and a lone *Greater Black-backed Gull. *After
recording these, I headed to my next favorite spot, Tappen Beach.

There at Tappen, the gulls were quite prolific. I could not count the
numerous *Ring-billed *and *Herring Gulls, *but I succeeded in recording
two *Greater Black-backed Gulls*. Four *Mallards* swam in the turbulent
water, and a lone *Gadwall *floated around. 24 *Canada Geese* were also
present.

The highlight of the day was certainly a lone, juvenile *Tundra Swan* that
was hanging out around Tappen. That as a lifer, but the real accomplishment
was identifying it through my constantly foggy binoculars (I was scared to
bring the scope out in the howling wind and two feet of snow).

Good Birding,
Avery Scott

I checked Gerry Park today and found neither Cackling Goose nor Greater

were also two American Coots present and I saw three Red-tailed Hawks over
the pond.

[nysbirds-l] Long Island Sound Trip Report

2013-12-08 Thread Avery Scott (SkyOfBirds)
Hi guys,

I decided to check out the Long Island Sound yesterday and see what was
there. Not a huge amount of terribly interesting birds, but okay. Here is
the list.

7 Great Black-backed Gull (life bird)
200+ Ring-billed Gull
20 Herring Gull (2 banded)
100+ Canada Geese (7 banded)

I reported the banded birds to the Bird Banding Laboratory. I hope to head
back to the sound in two weeks or so and see if I can get some other birds
there.

Happy Birding,
Avery
